Lindsey, thanks for looking into things. Whatever it was seems to have cleared itself up for the time being. I swear, my time online is nothing if not adventurous. I think the gods of cyberspace are concerned that I might get bored. AAAHHH the kitty is black. I love it. It looks really really great. Now I'm really happy. ;D Yeah, Kitty insisted on wearing her Halloween costume all month long. How can I say no to that face?

Listen August if we had an avatar contest for your personal avatar ... your kitty would win IMOP. I know this is an Apolo site but I bet you Apolo would vote for kitty too. I'm not braggin or nothing but isn't my siggie that Lindsey made me gorgeous? Kudos to Lindsey. That's all I have to say.

Tippy your banner is exquisite! The font is so classy, and what other choice but gold! The pictures... well that goes without saying. Beautiful!

I wanted a skater face and a dancer face and I asked for a creamy colored background but the lettering font and coloring and placement was all Lindsey and she sure did do a beautiful job.

I have a question that I have been pondering: If I am logged on (by default choice) for 6 hours, does that show me as being *online*, even tho I have shut down my *puter*, or does it show me as *offline*? Help, anyone???

Help, anyone??? Yeah, I was wondering that too, Lily. I have a question of my own - In my profile, my Account Status is listed as 'Activated', but I noticed that some other members are listed as 'Not Activated'. What's the difference between an activated and a not-activated member?

...and while we're AT it, I noticed that in my profile it says that the last time I logged on was August 20...I 'think' that most people know that THAT'S a lie (though some might wish it were true)...*giggle*
...Whaddup???

Hey guys! I'm starting this thread to answer questions pertaining to the board itself (you can include questions about the main site, too). I've tried to answer questions as they come in, but I'm sure there are some I have missed. For right now, I'll leave the thread open for people to post questions for help, and as I respond, I'll start to create a FAQ in this post by editing it so future users won't have to sift through questions. Don't ever think your question is stupid! There are things about this board that I don't even know and I might have to go and do research on. But I promise I work to find the answer and explain it until you understand my gibberish! So start posting your questions, or suggest things that you found confusing in the beginning that you think I should post the answers to! Hey guys! Don't ever think your question is stupid! There are things about this board that I don't even know and I might have to go and do research on. But I promise I work to find the answer and explain it until you understand my gibberish! So start posting your questions, or suggest things that you found confusing in the beginning that you think I should post the answers to! Q: How do I post a picture? A: There are two easy ways: 1. Put the URL of the picture in between [img [i/]] [/img[i/]] tags. 2. In the message box (not the quick reply box), paste the URL, highlight it and then click the image button (2nd row, 4th from right under Add Tags).
Q: Where can I host pictures? A: There are many sites where you can host pictures for free. A lot of users here like PhotoBucket, ImageShack, etc.
Q: Why does [image] show up in a post? A: That will show up if a picture has been removed from the host--i.e., if it's old and the person who posted it has deleted their picture account. It will also appear if the string of characters (the URL for the picture) is too long. ProBoards has a limit of 100 characters in a row. If you can, rename the file so it's shorter.
Q: How do I put an avatar (the icon under your name) or a signature/siggie (the box under each of your posts) in my profile? A: While logged in, click the Profile button in the top navigation bar. Then click Modify Profile. There you'll find a form where you can enter the URLs for your avatar, and where you can modify your signature (use tags like you would in a message). You can have both text and images in signatures.
Q: What is an invisible user? A: It means you can be online, but other members can't see who you are.
Q: What is karma? A: Karma reflects the good or bad feelings people have towards you, so to speak. If a member really likes a post you made or a comment or just loves you, they can "exalt" you, which adds a point to your karma. If they think you need to be taken down a notch, they can "smite" you, which removes a point from your karma. You can exalt or smite a member once an hour.
Hi, first time trying to add an image. I have a few in my snapfish account. The URL for one of these is: images2.snapfish.com/232323232%7Ffp53245%3Evq%3D3337%3E68%3A%3E897%3EWSNRCG%3D3236%3A85474%3B%3A%3Avq0mrjIt doesn't have a file extension like .jpg, or .gif. Using the instructions in this note, when I do a preview, I see nothing...ot the URL listed (which I wouldn't expect anyway) or anything. If I post, the post is blank. What I notice is that the name that I gave the pic "fathair1" is not listed as part of the URL. The "Type of File" listed in the properties is Photo Album 6 Photo. Any ideas on what I should try? I also did the method of pasting in the URL first, then highlighting and licking the Insert Image button... Thanks for your help.

Although snapfish is a photo hosting account, I don't think it's an account that can be used to host pictures that are used elsewhere on the web. For snapfish, those are pictures can only view when on the snapfish site or on a direct link - hotlinking (pointing to the other picture to be shown on another site) might be turned off for these photos. You might be better off using imageshack or one of the others that Lindsey had mentioned.

for posting images (photos/smileys) directly to post message
right click onto the image you want to post -> go down to properties and click -> while in the properties box...highlight entire address (URL) then right click and copy URL -> click OK to exit out of properties box.
go back to where you want to post image -> right click and paste URL. here's a sample URL (it's mr. sharky): i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd5/mountain_me/shark.gif
to create an image code from your URL add the following: [ img ] in front of the URL and [ /img ] at the end of the URL. now the image code you've created will look like this: [ img ]http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd5/mountain_me/shark.gif[ /img ] (remove all spaces)
go to preview to check image...good luck Isn't this hotlinking, and is this allowed on this forum? I know that it isn't allowed on other forums that I am a member of because sometimes people actually pay for hosting of images, and this uses up their bandwith.

I know that it isn't allowed on other forums that I am a member of because sometimes people actually pay for hosting of images, and this uses up their bandwith. We don't have an official policy on hotlinking here... I do have a way of going to see where the images are linked, but it would be really tedious for me to have to check every image posted here, so I basically haven't created a policy. If you're taking photos off another website, it's generally common courtesy to save the photo to your own computer and then upload it on a website such as imageshack or photobucket. I know some people take the URL right off the website, and you're right, it does eat up bandwidth (I'm one of the ones that pays for it!). Of course, Number1's example was using a photobucket account, so whether or not it's your photobucket account, the bandwidth is free. So I really don't consider that specific example "hotlinking." Now if the URL was from www.apoloantonohno.com, that'd be hotlinking, in my book. But again, you're not going to get reprimanded here if you do it (I probably won't even notice). But the owner might, and that's just not nice!

But the owner might, and that's just not nice! lindsey...tell me if i understand this correctly please. 1) any photo that has photobucket or imageshack in it's URL is not stealing bandwidth from anyone because those sites are free. i've seen some of my screencaps at other sites but never considered is stealing because the internet is public...what is the proper etiquette on this type of photo posting?
2) ie: this URL is the first photo from oz today...credit was given to andrew's site... <http://www.andrewlove.org/blog/blogpics07/apollo1.jpg> since oz is posting a pic from andrewlove.org, is this considered a hotlinked photo? if this same photo had the following URL instead <http://www.ohnozone.net/blog/blogpics07/apollo1.jpg>, would it be kosher? 3) here's the URL to <http://www.gotapolo.com/galleries/albums/userpics/10001/lmao~0.gif> if you copy and paste this and surround it with the image brackets as is, would this be using your bandwidth? i have all my gifs and animated jpgs uploaded to my photobucket account.
mellie...thanks for bringing this up...my post is an elaboration of a previous post i found here.

Lindsey, thanks for clarifying this. I may have been guilty of doing this not because I'm trying to be unkind but because I'm a clueless computer dweeb. I recently learned about the little photo icon on the posts and copying the url was an easy shortcut- I'm assuming that is what a hot link is. I'll make sure I copy everything to my computer first and then to photobucket and then to here. Sorry if I unintentionally broke the 'proper' etiquette.
