seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/olympics/2004421884_olynotes18.htmlSeattle still in running for speedskating trialsMoving the 2009 U.S. Olympic Trials for short-track speedskating to September is making it tougher on Seattle's efforts to land the event. Seattle is viewed by the national speedskating federation as a prime candidate to host the trials because of its proximity to 2010 Winter Olympics host Vancouver, B.C., and because it is the hometown of the Winter Games' biggest name — Apolo Anton Ohno. Other locations expressing interest are Midland, Mich.; 2005 trials host Marquette, Mich.; Milwaukee; and Salt Lake City, headquarters for U.S. Speedskating. The September date (a change from December) narrows the choices for area venues, said Ralph Morton, Seattle Sports Commission executive director. Safeco Field will be tied up with the Mariners. Everett's Comcast Arena can be busy that time of year but is still an option, along with the Tacoma Dome. Kent's new arena won't have a big enough ice surface, Morton said. The group is looking for a site with a minimum of 5,000 seats. The federation is expected to name the trials host sometime this summer. Another possibility for Seattle is an international speedskating exhibition with Ohno as the obvious draw, but that would not hold the same appeal, Morton said. "I don't think anyone would want to watch him just skate," he said. "The race would have to have some meaning." " Seattle is viewed by the national speedskating federation as a prime candidate to host the trials because of its proximity to 2010 Winter Olympics host Vancouver, B.C., and because it is the hometown of the Winter Games' biggest name — Apolo Anton Ohno[/b]." I LOVE how they don't just say Apolo's short-track speedskating's biggest name (which he obviously is), but the friggin' entire WINTER GAMES' biggest name. YES!! Go Apolo Go!

OK guys - I'm looking at WC1 in SLC 10/17 - 10/19 and the ST Championships in St Louis 12/19 - 12/21. I would love to attend every competition, but I've already blown my travel budget this year: Feb - SLC - WC6 April - Chicago - girls shopping weekend May - New Orleans - crawfish season! June - Aruba - never been there Sept - Florida - new grandbaby's first trip to the ocean About two more trips is all I can handle. Let me know if these are the "right" ones for you guys. It just wouldn't be the same without all the crew there! Now if you'll excuse me, I need to plan a bake sale and a car wash to finance my ST habit.
BTW - Good to see you back toehold4

For those of you in the Los Angeles area- upthread I mentioned a 'Road Trip' to the SLC World Cup in October. My thoughts would be to leave Thursday morning and travel home on Monday. The estimated costs would be as follows: Gas - between $50 and $70 per person, depending on how many are going (guessing 4 to 6 of us). Room - $160 pp, plus tax (2 to a room at the Hilton Garden Inn - 4 nights) Tickets - $45 pp for Gen. Admission 3-day total; if VIP tix are available (probably not) this could go as high as $150. Totals - $205 to $380 per person, plus food and incidentals Y'all be thinking about it...

Hi all, I've been keeping tabs on airfare, and Southwest is running some amazing deals (at least for us west coasters) on just the dates we are looking for. Follow my logic here. For those of you who are considering going to the Salt Lake City World Cup, AND the Vancouver World Cup a week later in October- (I'm thinking I'll just take my vacation then and make a week or so of it) Here's what I found: From LAX to SLC - $99From SLC to Seattle, WA - $94We rent a car (Which we would have to do anyway) and drive the few hours to Vancouver (Beats the $500-$600 rt airfare I was seeing flying INTO Vancouver - and we spend the week checking out the sights) We drive back to Seattle on Monday after the WC and drop off the car. If you wait until Tuesday to fly out, it is: wait for it - From Seattle, WA to Lax on Tuesday - a WHOPPING $79Darlin', it doesn't GET any better than that! (I checked- , Reno, Phoenix and Denver are running deals too) For less the $300 round trip airfare, you get to see not one - BUT TWO, World Cup events, fly all over the west coast, including a foreign country and by the time we bunk up with hotel rooms, this is about the cheapest 'bang for the buck' vacation you will ever get!- especially given the cost of gas and airfare these days. No excuses now west coasters, if you haven't been to a Short Track event yet - NOW IS THE TIME!The Bad News. The deal ends June 12. We've got less than two days to work this out. SO WHO WANTS TO GO??And wouldn't ya know, Lori is roughing it in the great outdoors and out of touch here. (I'll try her tonight on her cell....)

Lookin' mighty tempting there mtnme. Checked SWA and Seattle to Nashville is just $139. BUT....I'll miss the Titans vs the Colts on Monday Night Football. The whole 4 years I've had season tickets I've only had the opportunity to attend 1 televised Monday Night Football game and it was soooo much fun. And this is Peyton Manning (who used to play for University of Tennessee) against Vince Young.
This one's going to be a hard one. Ennie mennie minny moe. maybe I'll just have to go study the new Apolo "shower" pic and ponder on this awhile. Hummmm....

Might I point out: 1) "That is why God created Tivo..." 2) Football gets televised - A LOT!!! 3) Short track doesn't. 4) Your GA sista's won't be at the football game. 5) You probably won't be seeing your football heros comin' out of the shower - however - if you play your cards right (and make MANY trips to the bathroom), you might catch Apolo coming out of the lieu with his skinsuit pulled down around his waist.... 6) It's freaking the whole west coast road trip! for practically pennies! ...relatively speaking. Gotta do it babe! I'm ready to sign up... (and it forced me to finally print out that passport info I was supposed to do ages ago....)
