Doesn't Apolo have to compete in the U.S. Championships to qualify for the World Championships. Yes, that's true, Tdav. I fully expect him to be in St. Louis. On the other hand, I don't think he's ever competed in an American Cup. I actually think he has, Susie. But I could be wrong. I can see a picture in my head, but I'd have to search for it to actually prove that he has. LOL. And seeing as I don't think USS is giving byes anymore for US Champs, then he'll have to.

This made my night, I'm planning St. Louis! We're planning on St. Louis and possibly SLC............. We're hoping to go to Salt Lake City or Vancouver! The location of the Pacific Coliseum is on an East-West bus line from downtown Vancouver... we've ridden the bus before, on a past trip to that fair city.

According to the USS ST regulations...any team member that earns a medal at the 2008 World ST Champs will AUTOMATICALLY be qualified for the 9-lap time trial at the 2009 US ST Champs. Apolo doesn't have to race in AM Cup 1 (only if he wants to race in WCs 1-4). He's a shoe-in for the US Champs time trial (IF he wants to race WCs 5-6, World ST Champs, World ST Team Champs). Yeah...IF I could find Appendix A.

I CAN'T WAIT! Thank you, Lori.
But I'm kinda lost -- how do the World Cups work that come before Nationals in December? Don't they have to have Nationals first to see who qualifies and makes the World team that will compete in the World Cups? How do they know in October? Or is it just the 2008 World Team that is in place now that competes Oct-early Dec 2008 and then the December Nationals determine the 2009 World Team? (sorry -- not sure how this works, but I'm trying...)

(sorry -- not sure how this works, but I'm trying...) Skaterswaltz, American Cup 1 in September determines who skates in World Cups 1 thru 4. Nationals determines the skaters for World Cups 5 & 6 and and the World Championships. (Provided the rules haven't changed - again.) AmCup 1 could be a great alternative to Nationals for people who find it too hard or too expensive to travel to Nationals right before Christmas, 'cause for the most part it attracts the same skaters. You can check out last year's lineup below if you're interested in seeing who competed. Plenty of big names... I've been asking around to find out if skaters like Travis and Alyson Dudek have to compete in AmCup 1. I could swear that I read somewhere that as last season's overall AmCup champs they are automatically qualified to be on the early season World Cup team, in which case those are 2 big names that might not be competing, unless they're looking at it as a tune-up. Anybody know for sure? Also, I'm wondering if Apolo's World Championship would give him a bye onto the WC team, in which case he may not be in AmCup 1. He's chosen not to compete much on the World Cup circuit since the Olympics, but that could change as 2010 looms nearer, and with WC #1 being in SLC he may want to be on that early team. usspeedskating.org/pdf/results/2007DowAmericanCupIMensOverall.pdfusspeedskating.org/pdf/results/2007DowAmericanCupILadiesOverall.pdf

I"ve never known Apolo to compete in an American Cup in the 6 years I've followed the sport. That's really too bad because in a very practical way it would "grow the sport" for him to mingle with skaters other than the National Team. I'd like to go to Vancouver and spend a few days sightseeing before the competition. October is usually dry up there

Dear Lilyover70; I would love to meet you if you come to Vancouver. I have so appreciated your photos from Salt Lake, etc. Yes, The Pacific Coliseum is on a bus route from downtown Vancouver and I'm sure they will be providing many forms of travel from the hotels to the venues, at least during the Olympics. I live in East Vancouver and am hoping to get tickets for the Oct. 26-29 world cup. If I can help you in your planning in any way please let me know, and I'll send you a pm with my direct contact info. Good luck in your planning. Musical Mom Musical Mom

Musical Mom Musical Mom Musical Mom... thanks so much for your kind offer! I love visiting Vancouver (been there about 5-6 times)... so any excuse to get there works for me! We were there the last 4 days of May in 2007, prior to boarding our cruise ship to Alaska. Everyone should visit Vancouver once in their lifetime!

Carried over from TheRockerFund thread... I noticed some 'action' last night on the Yahoo Group, so let's get this thread rollin'! OK guys - who's going where? I need to start requesting vacation days. St Louis? SLC? Vancouver? Where else? Mtnme, GND, Wildfire, Maricorgi, Skaterswaltz, Lily....let me hear from you. For Me? First Tier: Nationals in St Louis - (I can visit a sister and my birthplace); and the October World Cup in SLC - going to the Oval would be 'freakin' awesome' without fear of a blizzard... Second Tier: American Cup 1 (most of the same skaters as Nationals) and the Vancouver World Cup... Any of you in the Los Angeles area? I have some ideas for the SLC World Cup... (think - ROAD TRIP!!!!)

I am planning a vacation the last week in May and may be in SLC for a few days. Does anyone know what type of training might be going on at the Oval? Or are the skaters pretty much in vacation-mode-doing-their-own-personal-training thing.
Thanks,

Vancouver is my first choice b/c I love that city and it'll be a chance to check out the interior of Pacific Coliseum. I've already talked about this possibility with Sam. If Sam doesn't want to go to the SLC WC, a ROAD TRIP might be a possibility for me. Going to Nationals, so close to Christmas, is almost an impossibility for us this year... "darn"... Sam and I enjoyed Nationals at SLC so much... in spite of the snow!

I'm with Lily in being conflicted over SLC or Vancouver. I adored the trip to the Oval and it would be like going home. OTOH I would really like to take a trip to Vancouver, where I've NEVER been and check it out since I am determined to do the Olympics in 2010. What to do? Of course it would help to know if Apolo planned to skate both.. guess that will have to wait a bit. But count me in for one of those and I'll be looking to hook up with the GA group. Nationals will be tough, but not totally out of the question.
