....and another idea Lori....why not feature these "Legends of Short track" (LoST--and found, so to speak) on rocker-u. Be fun to get to know them and how short track was through their eyes. History lessons are good for the soul.

I think that's a great idea. I loved talking to them and hearing about the wild and wooly days of short track. Fascinating. ....and another idea Lori....why not feature these "Legends of Short track" (LoST--and found, so to speak) on rocker-u. Hi Everyone!
Wow, Lori... congratulations! I'm late again and I apologize that I don't get over here more often.
Skaterswaltz... great pics of the old-timers!
Ski season for our family had us busy with grandkids last week up at Mammoth Mountain... as well as planning for 4 road-trips coming up soon... and our Canadian benefactors coming down to visit us!

Skaterswaltz... great pics of the old-timers! Hi Lily, There were other old-timers there, too. I wish I could have gotten pictures and had a chance to talk to all of them. I was talking to one of them who actually brought his old speed skates with him. They are all still really close and were looking through all the old pictures and newspaper articles together. Their wives are all friends, too. During the races, they would yell encouragement to the skaters out there -- very vocal, fun and rauchous group. They were just so cool.

LINK: sports.espn.go.com/espn/wire?section=oly&id=3955269- - - - - Believe it! Reutter has another impressive seasonAssociated Press Life was a lot less stressful when Katherine Reutter was winging it. Reutter is following last year's breakout season with another stellar showing, winning her second U.S. short track speedskating title and four silver medals on the World Cup circuit. She also was part of the 3,000-meter relay that won the gold medal at the World Cup in Dresden, Germany, claiming first-place team classification for the first time. But experience hasn't made things easier -- quite the opposite, in fact. "Last year, I didn't have quite the highs, but I never had the lows I've had this year, either," Reutter said. "Last year I really just went and was like, 'Hey, I'll just try and go for it and see how it goes.' This year it's been a little more planning, a little more strategy. "It's been better," she added. "But it's also been a little more stressful." She's learning to manage, though. Good thing, because the expectations are sure to grow in the run-up to the Vancouver Olympics. The 20-year-old Reutter grew up in Champaign, Ill., a city better known to speedskating fans as Bonnie Blair's hometown. The two had a chance to talk when Reutter was still in high school, and while their specialties are different -- Blair won her six Olympic medals, a U.S. record, in long track -- that encounter helped shape Reutter's career. She was given the chance to train at the U.S. Olympic Education Center in Marquette, Mich., but it meant leaving home for her senior year in high school. That's a tough choice for a teenager to make, but talking with Blair reinforced Reutter's decision that it really was what she wanted to do. Good thing. Reutter has established herself as one of the world's best in both the 1,500 meters, winning silver medals at the World Cup events in Japan, Bulgaria and Germany. She also won a silver in the 1,000 meters in Germany, and a victory in the 3,000 meters helped her claim her second U.S. title. Those results, along with some advice from a sports psychologist, have helped give Reutter the confidence to be a mainstay at the top of the sport. "I do think being comfortable mentally and not stressed is a big key," she said. "Everyone can do lap times, and it really comes down to who believes they can do it and is really confident. "Expectations, they get anybody," Reutter added. "People might expect me to do well, but I also choose to think it's because they believe I can." --- THE REST OF THE ARTICLE FEATURES OTHER ATHLETES.

Bronze medalist Izykowski suffers injuries in cycling crash by Times Staff Friday March 06, 2009, 10:50 AM
Alex Izykowski's training program to get back on the ice with the U.S. Short Track men's speedskating team came to a screeching halt Tuesday.
The 2006 Olympic bronze medal relayer from Bay City was struck by a car on a bicycle training ride in Sandy, a suburb south of Salt Lake City.
Al Izykowski, Alex's father, said his son was riding about 25-30 miles per hour when a car turned in front of him Tuesday about noon. The 25-year-old Bay City Western grad smashed into the car and went head first into the vehicle.
"All things considering, Alex is lucky to be alive," Al Izykowski said. Izykowski was treated and released from a local hospital. He suffered no head injuries, however, he has a broken nose and tooth and a sore shoulder.
Izykowski had been riding three to five hours in the mountains trying to recover from a hip injury.
"He was in good condition and I think, ready to come back on ice," his father said.
Alex Izykowski is expected to be back in Bay City on Tuesday for the 2009 U.S. Speedskating Nationals and American Cup Finals in Midland where his sister, Morgan, will be competing.

Do we have any 'operatives' in Midland??? According to the schedule, the AmCup Final races started from 6:30-9:00pm tonight (same time tomorrow night) - I couldn't get anything on the webcast - did anyone else??? No results yet on the USS website either... EDIT - Got this info from USS: Dear US Speedskating Members,
Due to a wiring problem, the 2009 Dow U.S. National Age Class Championships and American Cup Final was not successfully webcast today. Although technicians are currently working to fix the problem, it is not expected to be resolved soon. In any event, the entire championship event will be rebroacast at a later date. Thank you for your patience and your support of US Speedskating.'Guess that means I'll get SOME sleep this weekend... hahaha!

Congratulations to Coach Jae for being awarded the 2009 Coach of the Year from US Speedskating! ;D
From the US Speedskating website:
April 28, 2009 Salt Lake City, UT
Along with the much-deserved induction of five speedskaters into the National Speedskating Hall of Fame, five additional people were given awards during the US Speedskating Hall of Fame Banquet held in April in St. Louis, MO. USS President Brad Goscowicz was on hand to present the Coach of the Year award, the President's Award, and the Eric Heiden Skater of the Year Award.
USS National Short Track Head Coach Jae Su Chun (Draper, UT) was awarded the 2009 Coach of the Year award for his dedication to the team, his coaching philosophy, and his ability to find the best athlete in each of his skaters.
"Jae Su is the best coach I've ever had the opportunity to work with," said National Short Track athlete Katherine Reutter. "He can see exactly what each athlete needs and is so motivational. It is a privilege to work with him, and I feel so blessed to be a part of his program."
Short track coach Wilma Boomstra (Los Angeles, CA) was given the 2009 Developmental Coach of the Year award for her years of service to US Speedskating and the athletes. Boomstra develops programs for both ice and dry-land conditioning and has coached athletes like J.R. Celski, Jeff Simon, and Olympians Maria Garcia and Charles Ryan Leveille.
Goskewicz selected Mike Plant (Atlanta, GA) and Jack Mortell (Evanston, IL) to receive the 2009 President's Award. Plant was recently named the Chef de Mission for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver. A former Olympic speedskater, Plant now works as the executive vice-president for the Atlanta Braves major league baseball team. His selection as Chef de Mission marks the first time a winter Olympian has served as a U.S. delegation leader at the Games.
Mortell, who was inducted into the National Speed Skating Hall of Fame in 2008, was selected for his years of service to the speedskating community. A current member on the USS Board of Directors, Mortell will serve as the Olympic team leader for the Vancouver Games.
"Receiving the President's award was really quite unexpected," Mortell said. "All the people that are part of the US Speedskating family have done so many key things for the betterment of our sport. To be singled out for this award leaves me honored and humbled."
2009 World Sprint Champion and world-record holder Shani Davis (Chicago, IL) was awarded the 2009 Eric Heiden Skater of the Year Award for his accomplishments during the 2008-09 season. Next to Heiden, Davis became only the second U.S. athlete to win both the World Sprint Championships and the World Allround Championships (2005 and 2006). The award recognizes thegreat performances by Davis in long track speedskating.
