A thread for discussing this event, which caught us all by surprise!
Can anyone give a recap as to where Apolo stands going into Day 3? Between looking at the live results (which seem to be some obscure algorithm) and no live webcam, its a bit difficult figuring out where we stand ...
We know that he was dq'd in the 1500 on day 1; Day 1 also shows that he qualified in the And men's team qualified for the relay.
In looking at the day 2 results on usspeedskating.org, I don't see his name listed in any of the men's events.
On OZ there's a discussion going on about whether or not he was allowed to compete in this 500, since he was dq'd at the Nationals in December. But I couldn't figure out what the answer was, reading thru the discussion.
Has anyone been able to subscribe to the local station and see any racing?

and here's noelle's (oz) recap of day one: February 2, 2008 World Cup #5 day 1 results I have the feeling all you readers are way ahead of me on this, but World Cup #5 began yesterday in Quebec City with the qualifying rounds in all distances (1500m, 500m and 2 rounds of the 1000m). The official web site for World Cup #5 (in English) is here.
Here's how Team USA fared: 1500m heats Allison Baver, Katherine Reutter and Carly Wilson all qualified to skate in the semifinals taking place this evening. On the men's side, Jordan Malone qualified for the 1500m semis, as did Jeff Simon after being advanced. Apolo Ohno was uncharacteristically disqualified and won't move on.
500m qualifying Tina Koenig, Lana Gehring and Carly were unable to qualify directly in Friday's rounds and will skate in the repechage for another shot at moving on. Jeff and J.P. Kepka both qualified for the 500m quarter finals; Simon Cho was dq'ed in his heat.
1000m #1 qualifying Kimberly Derrick moves directly on to the quarter finals. Tina and Lana skated in the repechage rounds this morning, where both were eliminated. Lana made it all the way to the rep semifinals but she was disqualified. On the men's side, Charles Ryan Leveille qualfiied for the quarter finals; Simon and J.P. skated in the repechage, where Simon was eliminated. J.P. will skate in the B final tonight.
1000m #2 qualifying Katherine and Allison both moved on to the quarter finals; Kimberly was disqualified in her opening heat. Apolo, Ryan and Jordan are all moving on to the quarter finals as well.
Relays The women and men both won their relay heats. The women will take on China, Bulgaria and Russia in their semi tonight, while the men will face Korea, Great Britain and Germany in theirs.

according to those in the know at OZ, the world cups are different from the Nationals and World Championships. The skaters are allowed to skate in 2 distances. Apolo's were the 1000M and 1500M, for which he was disqualified for the latter. So that is why he isn't skating in the 500. It appears Apolo will be skating in this evenings events. (If I'm reading this right, 2:30 EST, 11:30 PST. ) Which would be the 1000M and the Relay. Charles Ryan Leveille and Jordan Malone also qualified. For the women, Allison Baver and Katherine Reutter qualified for this evenings 1000M. For the 500M the only American to qualify was JP Kepka. For the women's relay, we are in 8th place in the semi finals. The Mens' relay is currently at 3rd. The live feed is actually not bad. Not like seeing it live or on video, but still enjoyable. Do I get to believe that whooping & hollering at my computer from the W. Coast actually helps our skaters?! LOL! Here is the link for the live feed posted by 'guest' on the Apolo news thread. (Now these are the kind of Guest's I like!) www.sportresult.com/federations/ISU/ShortTrack/Live.aspx?evt=11210100000006Link from Susie on the same thread for photos and some promised video. www.speedskateworld.com/2008/02/quebec-isu-samsung-world-cup-short.htmlIt appears the reparge (sp) 1000M (2) are going on now. The rep. are for the skaters who did not fare well on the initial heats to have second chance to possibly pull up in the ranks.

Am I reading the results correctly? Didn't Allison Baver win the Bronze in the 1500m? If so, I believe she is the only American so far that has medaled. I was watching the live feed as she was racing...she took 4th but a skater was DQed.

Jordan Malone came in fourth for the men.

I think Apolo and Allison have races starting at 2:30 EST. I stink at military time or Quebec time...but...I think 14:30 is 2:30. I could be wrong though. Don't want you to miss out!

It is nerve-wracking, isn't it? I agree, probably ice-cleaning time. I think Charles Ryan Leveille came in second in his heat, after Song was DQ'd.
Yelling at numbers coming up on my screen on a Sunday afternoon -- and I'm loving it!
