Mens 1000M B final
Transcript
Note: Many of us have seen the video where Lee and Ohno skate slowly and the refs stop the race. This transcript is at the point when the race is stopped, and they have to rerace.
Man, Andy Gabel is brutal.
=================
Now the referees have decided to call the race back. I’m not quite sure why they waited so long. There’s only 2 laps to go and they call it back, that makes no sense either. They should have called it back at the beginning. I agree.
Ohno puts his arms up like “what is that?” I mean, they should have called this back right from the beginning.. Interesting here what the result is.
Well they’re going to start the race over again. Referee is telling them that if they do that again they’ll be out. So now will this begin right from the very beginning, or right from where they’re at? Ah, they’ll restart right from the beginning again.
(GUN)
So they will restart and they will look to do what looks like the SAME thing here. I’m not sure what’s going on, Andy Gabel.
I don’t either. I’ve never seen anything like this before. Well at least the pace they’re going now isn’t abnormal for the start of a 1000M. SO its okay right now but its not going to a very fast race. But that first time, the referees after a couple of laps should have just called the race back and they didn’t. They waited until 2 laps to go. That doesn’t make a lot of sense.
Now they are racing a little bit now but they’re still kind of mocking it. I’m not sure what’s going on. Things are a little bit more focused here; they’re into that classic speed skating position. We’re not seeing that casual stand up, go for a skate around the public skating rink lap that we were seeing earlier this race earlier. But there is still, obviously, just going thru the motions right now is the best way to describe it. It’s really the only way to describe it.
I don’t think the fans are liking it all that much. They seem to be screaming, but I think they want them to race. These are the 2 best guys in the world and people here want to see AAO do what he does best. Its very interesting that they both have obviously sat and talked about this and come to a ‘hey listen, this is what we’re going to do…let’s do it together”. All for 1 and 1 for all, evidently.
What’s going on here, Andy?
I’m not really sure.
3 laps to go in this consolation final with the 2 best skaters in the world treating it as if its throw-away. And now here goes AAO…will you look at Charles Hamelin watching and thinking ‘what on earth is going on here….”
AAO has all of a sudden decided that he wants to skate now. However, ho-suk Lee is still going to take this thing as a casual stroll around the track. Ohno now, into form, gets a rouse out of the crowd and gives a little fist pump as he crosses the finish line with a time of 1:56.515. Ho –Suk lee with 2:03:03 Crowd starting to boo and they are not happy with this at all. I do not know what to make of that APolo Ohno I guess will come out as the winner of that one and there we see those 2 laughing about it at the very end. So an interesting situation right there. I’m not sure why someone as recognized as AAO would throw down a performance like that.
I don’t understand it either. You expect more out of APolo. He’s the ambassador of the sport.. He’s by far the most popular and most loved short track athelete that’s ever been. For him to pull a stunt like that is not going to sit very well with the officials, with the fans; you heard the boos at the end. I’m not so sure how to react to that but that’s okay, let’s get to the races where the really wanna race, and that’s these guys…
===========
Note by Linda: there's a close up camera shot of Apolo at the side, collecting his skate guards. Lee skates over to him to pick up his own stuff, and Apolo turns to him and they start shaking hands and laughing like little school kids. It was pretty funny to see that and listen to the commentators take it so seriously, feeling like they had been made fun of.
