Well, I'm late to the party... (I've been sick) but I'm trying to clarify what happened this weekend. So...
From what I gather, Apolo DQ's in one race (500?) and got 5th in the 1000 (won the Final B), and then the US men took silver in the relay (Woo hoo!) What about the 1500 and 3000? What happened to Apolo there? And you guys said he took 5th overall at Worlds? that is pretty impressive, considering it doesn't sound like he medaled in any of the single events. How is that possible?
I enjoyed reading your comments during the live feed. Someone had mentioned an NBC skating channel would be broadcasting Worlds. Is that on a cable station, or regular channel? and was it for World 5 or upcoming World 6?
Sorry for all the questions... guess I should dash over to OZ and see if I can find any more info there.

On Oz someone said for WC's skaters are entered in 2-4 events...and Apolo was entered in just 2 events for this WC...the 1500 and 1000M...and of course the relay, but he was just entered in 2 individual events.

Hey linmiste! Hope you're feeling better!! I'm not sure what exactly happened either in Quebec...I wasn't able to watch either. It's still a little confusing to me as well! The NBC thing is posted by Lori (GND) at the SLC World Cup thread...so check it out there. But the SLC WC 6 will be taped and then broadcast I THINK the middle of this month (?) on NBC Universal...I don't think I get that but I think it is cable/satellite. I hope any of this helped a little! Sorry I don't know too much but that's what I DO know! Can someone update on the WC 5 in Quebec?

Hi guys - it will be on UHD starting 2/20, a hi def channel that may or may not be available on your cable network. I have it and watched the LT comps and it was great.
YouTube and Peter Doucet's site have video of the 1000m B final (and show Apolo's fall in the semis). He shows exactly how slow they were going and the restart. At one point during the first start, Apolo puts his hand out and runs it along the banner on the pads. Peter adds a wonder touch of humor to the whole thing. Its great!

hey, enelyak, thanks for the clarification about the number of events entered. Very interesting. I will check out Peter's website; thanks for that idea, samantha. and wildfire, thanks for the well-wishes! I have whatever upper respiratory cold has been going around. It was bad this past week, and though I'm not quite back to normal, I am so much better! I hear it hangs on for about three weeks, though.

I don't know about you guys, but I thought the 'translation' was hilarious! Especially if you saw the video (It's on the video thread) While the commentary is in French - Apolo is speaking in English. Talk about 'lost in translation'. But I have to admit, the translators English is better than my high school French!

It looks like it was done with that Babel Fish translation program, so a lot of it is literal. I especially like: "I felt that I was covered with a layer of rust that I had to depart."

A link to Youtube, which has the Men's Final b Division, 1000 with Lee from Korea and Apolo. This is the one when they skated so slowly that the refs called the race short of completion. youtube.com/watch?v=1RrcEnYfbBoAnyone know what the story was behind this? Linda

Transcript of the Men's 1000M, in which APolo face planted in the semi-finals.
Quarter Finales
4th heat quarter final mens 1000M ohno steve robillard Zhhang chatagnier
One of the most recognizable faces in short track speed skating today. He’s one of the most recognizable faces in all of Olympics sports today.
(GUN)
The great Olympic champion several times over. AN absolutely phenomenal speed skater. The things that he’s done and accomplished, the way he skates…its truly remarkable.
I understand he’s also a good dancer.
That’s what people said.
(7 laps to go)
Nice move to the front by Chatagnier from France. WE saw some good things out of him yesterday. You got RObillard, Ohno and Zhang. This is a very, very difficult race. See Ohno sitting in 2nd place looking to decide when he’s going to make a move
What’s going on in their heads right now? Is it a matter of figuring out exactly when the time is to make that move…waiting and evaluating you opponent?
Exactly its just a matter of figuring out what to do, when to do it and how to do it. Nice inside move by Ohno. And Robillard with an inside move. A little bit of a bump there. Robillard bumping into Chantagnier. Apolo looking at the lap counter. 2 laps to go and its Ohno and Robillard. And here comes Zhang from China coming up on the inside. Robillard slipping around a little bit. Its all Ohno, easy race for Apolo Ohno to get to the front to qualify in this semi-final event.
And Apolo Anton Ohno will advance on to the semi-finals. You see a good look at him. The American skater who is currently your leader here. APolo Anton Ohno from the United States. DOesn’t look like that phased him too much. A pretty easy race for APolo, who stays to the front of the race when he can. Moved into first place with about 3 laps to go. Apolo Anton Ohno currently your leader.
We’ll see where the rest of the field sits and a possible DQ and the judges will review this one. Robillard dq’d so its apolo followed by Zhang and Chataignier.
Semi-finals
Bastille, Seung-Hoon Le, Ohno, Zhang
Of course AAO from the US involved in this one. Expect to see a good race out of him. Absolutely. Really done a great job of pumping up the sport. Very recognizable. Very Bonny Blair, Dan Jansen…right along with those guys, well known in the sport. AO making a name for himself as well.
Bastille ranked 14th in the world. Seung-Hoon Lee from Korea, rangked 18th in the world. AAO from the US. And Zhang from China, ranked 34th right now in the world cup standings.
What do you see in this race, Andy?
Well this will be a great race; you’ve got 4 strong countries: Canada, US, Korea and AChina. The 4 major countries here today. Expect a fast pace out of these guys because of the types of skaters that all 4 of these guys are. Is this a race that AAO expects to win when he starts it? Absolutely, or at least qualify. Remember in the semifinals all you’re trying to do is qualify. For for Apolo, every time he steps on the ice he expects to win; and every time he steps on the ice I think others expect him to win, too, he’s that good.
A nice pace going on here. Bastille’s a little bit inexperienced and so is Zhang and you’ve 2 more experienced skaters in Ohno and Lee. He wants to lead this race from the beginning but here comes Zhang into first place. Keep your eyes on Ohno. At some point he’s going to try to make a move with 2, 2 ½ to go, somewhere in that range is where he likes to let it out a little bit. And here comes Bastille into 2nd place. Ohno starting to wind it up in back, you see him doing that. Here it comes. Nice move on the inside by APolo into 3rd place and oh! There goes APolo. Looks like the ice just got away from him and down he went. Very, very uncharacteristic for AO to go down, ever. Looks like he was making that move to the inside Andy and he might have had it, but he just slid out, lost it from underneath him or the ice gave way. I mean he went down and will fall out and that will put him…well I’m not sure where that will put AAO. Its going to put him in 4th place for the race because he fell. But we’ll see what ends up happening here but it looks like a great race by Bastille to get into 2nd place. This is going to be photo finish actually. Its just how it looked. We probably have to go to the photo finish on this one. Great racing so far.
Disappointment certainly for AAO.. We’ll get another look at the race here…good inside move by Zhang to move into first place. Here comes Ohno up the inside. Makes a nice pass. Sits back and boom! The ice got away from him when he put his left skate down it just went away. Here they come across the finish line and we’ll see what ends up happening. Wow. That could be a dq on the Chinese skater Lee for kicking out. You cannot kick your foot out that far forward and have the blade come off the ice. And as we move forward we could see…we’ll see what happens. You don’t see it here on this video replay, but he really stretched his foot forward and his foot came way off the ice and that can be a dq if they catch it.
There you see it, Zhang comes in first followed by Bastille, Ohno 3rd and Seung-Hoon lee dq’d. Still disappointing for AAO. Ohno will not be in the medal rounds.
