(I posted this on the *random* thread but I'm going to repost it here b/c Special Olympics is very important to our family.)The 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games will be held in Shanghai, People's Republic of China, from 2-11 October 2007. California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is the Global Ambassador and he is there for Opening Ceremonies. One of our grandsons is a *Special Olympian*, due to brain damage at birth. He is very *special* to us; he has won many medals in track. All gold-medal winners have their name put in a drawing, to attend the China games. His name was not drawn but 2 Californians names were drawn for these summer games. Had his name been drawn, we would've gone to Shanghai with him, as chaperones. One of his teammates was chosen to attend the previous games. The Special Olympics gives hope to disabled athletes; it is so amazing to see them, in spite of their handicap, to do the best that they are able. Our daughter and her husband are coaches for the track and floor hockey teams in their chapter. My husband and I attend as many games as possible and I take photos of the athletes as they compete. When I give them copies of their photos, they faces just light up with joy! Our Special Olympian with Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Olympian The *High-School Champ* below is an assistant coach in his spare time from studies

What a handsome grandson you have there, Lily! I'm so happy to hear of your support of the Special Olympics. One of my co-worker's sons is a special Olympian and when he drops by his Mom's workplace, he often has a medal on him to show to people. He's sweet and so rightfully proud. I see how much pleasure my co-worker gets from being involved and I'm sure it's the same pleasure you get.

Thanks, Lexi! Yes... it is very emotional and touching, to see how proud these special olympians are, of their accomplishment in spite of their handicaps. It is so-o-o rewarding to go to these games and the cheer for every last one of these athletes! ;D

Lily, I love the pics of your grandson, thanks for sharing them with us. I know you must be so very proud of him! I saw some clips of the Special Olympics opening ceremonies in Shanghai on GMA this morning...it looked like a really beautiful show. I admire all the athletes for their courage, dedication, and determination. Special people like them are usually the ones who teach us the most important life lessons.

Lily - I love the pictures of your favorite hapas. My grandson is an adorable little hapa....love him to pieces! socalgrl, I'll bet he is just precious! we have 2 more hapa grandsons, ages 10 and 7, as well as many other relatives who are hapas. They are so exotic-looking! Makes me wish I were hapa! Lily, I love the pics of your grandson, thanks for sharing them with us. I know you must be so very proud of him! I'm glad you got to see it! Our son went to watch a floor hockey SO competition last year. He said that experience was so enlightening to him to watch his nephew, to see the determination and commitment of these athletes, in spite of their handicaps. One fellow on our team had been crippled in a childhood fall (off a roof and nearly died); he walks with a strong limp and his left arm is permanently bent and mangled. Yet, he is one of the *starters* on this floor hockey team... it is amazing to watch him! I let our SO grandson borrow my two books of Apolo. He was so intrigued, looking at the photos of Apolo... he kept saying, "WOW!" It just made me smile and warmed my heart, to see the admiration in our grandson's eyes!

Thanks, Jenna, I didn't know how a post about Special Olympics would be received here, but when I heard that our Governor was going to open the ceremonies in China, I just had to post about Special Olympics and give it some exposure. Most of the people who work at the competition are volunteers, including the coaches, transport people, etc. These volunteers are the unsung heros too. ;D Thanks everyone, now I'll get off my soapbox!

Jenna, when I was a child my mom used the term Hapa in reference to a person who was half-Japanese and half- caucasian... that was 6-7 decades ago. But, today, I'm sure it refers to half-oriental and half-caucasian/and/or other.
Can anyone else add to this explanation?
