Awwww, that was a cute story! How many people can say 'I work out with Apolo Ohno'? Lucky Utah'ns. (is that what they're called?) It's "Mormons."

That was a fun read. Seeing Apolo on the track would sure keep me motivated! The only thing that bothers me is the comments that Apolo is "little" and that her husband could beat him up. I think they're overlooking how incredibly fit he is. Not an ounce of fat. His casual dress often hides the rippling muscles beneath. He is quick and powerful. Every fiber of his muscle is a tightly wound spring. If anyone really tried to take him on, they'd quickly be on the defensive. They're lucky Apolo is too nice to fight. Sorry, just had to defend my man....

Sorry, just had to defend my man.... Too funny Linmiste, and I couldn't agree more! Gotta 'step up' for our guy. Kind of funny, (well, OK, sad - actually) the sort of thing people place value in. Apolo isn't a tall guy- (I've stood next to him, I know) - and who cares? She bet her husband could 'take' him? And why exactly would that be necessary in life? Apolo has more than proved who he is, what he is all about and what he is capable of. And it doesn't appear to include being the type of guy who needs to get into back ally brawls to prove he's a man. With 5 Olympic medals (and counting...), and plenty of others, it's not just his accomplishments that intrigue us, it's the gracious manner in which he does it. The lady in question misses the point. If she bothered to read up on the guy, she would realize what a very interesting man she is sharing the jogging track with- and there is a lot more to him than his height. While there are plenty of attractive men to have fan sites for, that isn't what draws us in and keeps us interested. Apolo's integrity, dedication, good humor, and just the way he conducts his life in general is what we admire. In a society that more often than not celebrates the superficial, I'll take a 'short' guy with substance and brains any day ....and what's with the 'middle age women' remarks? Apolo fans are of all ages. Perhaps it takes an older woman to truly appreciate those fine qualities. (As opposed to "I'll bet my husband could beat him up"...and this is a 'fine quality'... because?...)

I agree with Mtnme and Linmiste completely. First of all I know that Apolo could take that guy, he would crush him with his thighs. And second of all Apolo's height has nothing to do with the absoluetly amazing person that he is. He is so much more. And his fans are of all ages which is so great, because he appeals to all different kinds of people. I for one am not a middle aged lady. But I love all the different aged ladies we have here, it makes it interesting and fun. And I believe that as long as your young at heart that's all that matters anyways. Ok I'm done venting. ;D

First of all I know that Apolo could take that guy, he would crush him with his thighs. Thanks, mntme and apolosgal, for joining me in expressing disappointment in this woman. I totally agree with you both. This woman has no idea that she is exercising in the presence of greatness, not just Apolo, but all the Olympic athletes who train there. By the way, I am wondering if any old Joe (or Jane) can walk in off the street and use the facilities. Do you purchase a gym pass? I'd hate to think any lunatic could walk in there with our precious athletes.

The "short" cracks annoy me too. I guess Apolo could crush the guy with his thighs if he wanted to (interesting thought)....I think he would rather slay the guy with his charm, wit, intelligience and sex appeal. Also....most people don't realize that Apolo is 1/2 Japanese and has the physique to go with it. Oh well....that just leaves more Apolo for the rest of us

Hi Everyone!
We're in SLC on a ski trip... and the bonus was to go to the Oval last Saturday and today (Monday)!
Saturday, we arrived at the Oval and walked in just behind Jordan Malone and Jeff Simon. We called out to them, and when they turned around and saw us, we were greeted with a big smile and Jeff said, "Hey!" I got hug from both of them; Sam shook hands... and we told them we were skiing nearby and had a couple of days to visit the Oval and watch the practice sessions. After several minutes chatting with Jordan and Jeff, Apolo walked in, just a few feet from us and Sam called out to him. Apolo was surprised too, to see us there... LOL !!! Sam had some home-grown macadamia nuts to give Apolo (he likes these) and Apolo was happy to receive them. We had a nice little chat with Apolo for several minutes and then he had to get on with his jogging session. We sat on the bleachers and watched as Apolo jogged with Jordan, Jeff and Travis Jaynor... Sam spoke to Travis but I was off getting some coffee! J.R. Celski was there too. Soon Allison Baver came in... Sam called out to her... she turned around and came right up on the bleachers to chat with us. She knew we were going to be there, since I had told her mom that we would be visiting the Oval. After a nice long chat, she excused herself... Sam was very pleased to visit with Allison, as was I!
Today, we went back to the Oval at 10am. (snow all over the streets and freeways). We saw Apolo, Travis, J.R., and Jordan... but no Jeff. He might have been training elsewhere. There was one other fella, but we couldn't tell who it was. The women were Allison, Katherine, Lana, Jessica and (I think) Carly. They all worked on relay today! It was very interesting to watch the practice. During the practice, Apolo was doing ice maintenance, pouring water and then sweeping it... and as he came in front of us, he'd waved to us as he skated by... we were sitting in the very top bleacher seats. After the on-ice practice, they were to do dry-land training. Katherine came right up in front of us and asked, "What brings you here?" We went down from our seats to talk to her and we told her about our days skiing; she chatted with us for quite a while about various things... St. Louis, her family and the Olympic trials in Sept. She also said that they'll leave soon for WC 5 and 6 (which we knew), then come back to SLC for a couple of weeks of training, after which they'll leave for World Championships. Then they'll be through with training in SLC for this season. So we were fortunate to be able to watch them at this time, since they won't be here after March!
As we watched, we did not attempt to take any photos, out of respect for their practice time. It was a great morning at the Oval, for the second time!

Thanks, Lily, for the great story. Great to see the die-hard fans can rub elbows so easily with the team. It must have been nice for them to see a friendly face show up...breaks things up a bit for them, I would think.
Careful of avalanches out there!
