Many thanks to everyone who has posted articles/videos and shared personal photos and experiences about the current speedskating season. Skaterswaltz, thank you for posting the info about Universal Sports' coverage of speedskating a few weeks ago. If not for you, I wouldn't even have known I got that station on my cable plan. What a thrill it was to watch Apolo and the rest of our wonderful men's and women's ST teams live at WC 1, and to know there's more to come! I got to see Shani get silver in Berlin last weekend, and gold yesterday live in the Netherlands! I'm excited to see him with Chad and Trevor in the team pursuit tomorrow. I also caught a half hour special on Apolo's overall World Champion victory last Sunday morning. It's just so much after getting hardly any speedskating coverage here in the US for years! I can barely believe it. If anyone interested has not yet checked to see if you get Universal Sports on TV, please check here: www.universalsports.tv/Universal_Sports_on_TV.html It was easy for me to miss since it is a very high channel here, and simply listed as NBC. They don't list their individual programs on my on-screen television guide, just a generic "Universal Sports Programming" all day. So I have to check their website to get programming details, but it's definitely worth it. Thanks again, everyone.

Epiphaniii - you're very welcome. My friend had told me about Universal Sports on our cable listings and it's so wonderful to see the competitions in your living room. I missed the half hour special on Apolo's overall World Champion victory. Hopefully they will re-run that one!

Hey, all, now that we've launched the Rocker-U website, I'm going to refer everyone to my summary there for the US Championships trip. Please bookmark it and refer to it if you need info - it will save you having to slog through all the ST Season pages! Of particular importance is the info on the group dinner. Check it out and let me know by Dec 11 if you are going! www.rocker-u.net/sr_nationals.htm(I've also posted this on the 'Nationals' thread...)

Hey everyone, check out this blog from Michael Gilday, a skater on the Canadian Team. (Dad Dave, is the one who sent the picture of all of us to OZ to get us to 'defect' to the other side! LOL) Nice try 'Dad Dave', but it's a 'No Go'! Very interesting read, and don't you wish a member of the American Team would indulge the American Fans with their 'Day in the Life' accounts. ;D mgilday.blogspot.com/

I echo the " don't you wish a member of the American Team would indulge the American Fans with their 'Day in the Life' accounts." I really enjoy reading first-hand accounts/impressions and personal anecdotes from the skaters. Michael Gilday even gave us a lesson in haggling if we ever find ourselves in the markets of China . He also has a picasa album account which he has linked to his blog. Here is the direct link to the pics... picasaweb.google.com/ykgday/MichaelGilday?authkey=TiZavTeQQWM#He has some nice ones there (there is also a skating one in which you can also see Apolo). LOL on the pics of 'Marianne wrestling a bear.' See, this is just some of the kind of goofy stuff I'd enjoy reading/seeing from Team USA on occasion.

Speed skating: Malone tries to skate back into top form
11:24 PM CST on Thursday, December 18, 2008 By Todd Jorgenson / Sports Editor
Strong results would be a measure of redemption for Jordan Malone this weekend.
Beginning today, the Denton native will compete at the U.S. Short Track Speedskating Championships in St. Louis looking to rebound from a recent string of injuries and from a subpar showing at nationals a year ago.
For Malone, the meet will launch an important season that leads into the U.S. Olympic Trials in September. Malone’s long-term goal is a spot on the U.S. squad that will compete in Vancouver.
“This is the important one besides the Olympic trials,” Malone said. “It is much bigger for me.”
Malone, 24, said he feels strong after rehabilitating a broken foot suffered while jogging in August, which came on the heels of hip surgery in April and nose surgery over the summer. He was forced to wear a walking cast and was unable to skate for two months, though he stayed in shape by cycling.
“It was really hard,” Malone said. “I couldn’t do anything, but I was really anxious to be out there.”
Eventually, Malone began training with a club skating team in Virginia, and competed for the first time this season at an American Cup meet in Cleveland in early November, where he won three of four events.
“I showed that I was ready to compete at the World Cup level, and that’s what I wanted to do,” said Malone, who switched over from inline racing to short track about five years ago. He now spends most of his time in Salt Lake City, where he trains at the U.S. team headquarters.
The American Cup meet, however, did not feature the top six skaters in the country, making the U.S. Championships his first chance to compete against the top U.S. skaters, including two-time Olympic gold medalist Apolo Anton Ohno, in almost a year.
The stakes also are high this weekend because it is the only opportunity for Malone to qualify for spring World Cup meets in Bulgaria and Germany, and for the World Championships in March.
Last year, Malone did not qualify for any individual events at Worlds after suffering through a series of bad breaks and questionable officiating decisions at nationals. He raced for the U.S. as part of the relay team at Worlds instead.
“I skated well last year. I was in position to be in the top three but I wound up fifth,” he said. “It’s part of the sport, and I just have to accept that.”
One key for Malone in the upcoming season is to avoid the types of injuries that have plagued his career.
He missed out on a chance to compete at the 2006 Olympics in Turin, Italy, because of an ankle injury. In 2003, Malone bounced back from severe head and ankle injuries to win a world inline title.
Malone said he is confident heading into this weekend, when he will compete in five events at various distances in three days. He said he has improved his strength and technique since last season despite the late start to the season.
A top-five finish would place Malone back on the U.S. World Cup team for the spring season and would give him momentum heading into the Olympic Trials.
“This is the last chance to show your guns before the big one comes around,” Malone said. “I’ve got everything in my sights. I know what I need to do, and I’m pretty sure I can do it.”

Congrats to Peri! (I've corresponded a few times with Peri, and she always answered my questions quickly and kindly!) Now if taking the time to answer a fans' (mine) often clueless questions doesn't make for good public relations, I don't know what does! _________________________________________________________________________________________________
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 7, 2009-Salt Lake City, UT. US Speedskating is pleased to announce Peri Kinder has been named Public Relations and Communications Director for US Speedskating. Executive Director Bob Crowley made the announcement at the US Speedskating National Headquarters at the Utah Olympic Oval on January 6, 2009.
"Peri has been excellent in serving as our Member Services Coordinator and has become well-acquainted with our membership," Crowley says. "She brings a strong journalist background to this position and I am very optimistic about the potential for growth in this position."
As the Public Relations and Media Director, Kinder will help promote US Speedskating through print, online, broadcast and other mediums, as well as work with speedskating athletes to prepare them for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver.
"I think we have amazing athletes in our organization," Kinder says. "Not only elite athletes, but up-and-coming skaters who will be medal contenders in future Olympic Games. I'm excited to work with the media, the skaters and the USS members to bring speedskating to the forefront of winter sports in the U.S."
Since joining US Speedskating in 2006, Kinder has been Executive Assistant to Crowley and the Membership Coordinator for the organization. She has written press releases, provided and posted content for the US Speedskating website and has been the assistant editor for US Speedskating publications. Kinder works closely with Bonnie Blair-Cruikshank and the USS Hall of Fame Committee, assisting with the organization of the annual election, induction and banquet. She also assists the USS Short Track Officials Committee and is the current liaison with national and international anti-doping agencies.
Kinder came to US Speedskating with a strong background in journalism. She has written an award-winning column for five years and continues to write for newspapers, periodicals and magazines in the western region of the United States.
