Overall, I'm really psyched as to how this Teams turned out. Andy Gabel says repeatedly on the Universal videos that Apolo and JR are the two best skaters in the world and he would put them up against any other two in a heartbeat. I think he's right. I think we're in for quite a ride next season.

Third place for both our teams....I think that's pretty awesome.

Nice way to begin the week. Now back to my regularly scheduled duties. Have a great day everyone. I know a bunch of kids from the USA will be doing the same. Woo Hoo

Congrats to our men and women for skating away with 3rd place overall. This link (the event site) has video of the races...www.knsb.nl/live-2009/wk/shorttrack/content/livevideo/index_eng.aspClick on their media player to see 4 rectangles...the 2 first ones read "replay of bracket # 1", the third is the "replay of repechage," and the 4th is the "replay of B-final." Click on which video you want to view. They will likely be adding video of the A-final on there as well later on.

I was wondering about this: Did Jeff get a medal too?
Answer: YES!
Some more stuff of interest - our guys, though a bit disappointed, were handsome, proud and supportive of each other on the podium, and the ladies were 'beaming and beautiful'.
And the Netherlands being, well, the Netherlands, the bouquets were glorious!
I can't wait to see some of those photos!

In looking at the race results from today, it looks like the US men could have been 1st or 2nd if we didn't have the DQ in the relay. Overall, I am so proud of both the Men's and Women's teams not only this weekend but all season long. They have gotten stronger and the US will be a force to be reckoned with at the Olympics. ;D Apolo, you are leading quite a group. Great job.

March 15, 2009—Heerenveen, Netherlands
For the first time in history, both the U.S. ladies' and men's short track speedskating teams stood on the podium at the ISU World Team Championships in Heerenveen, Netherlands. Both teams earned third-place finishes after the A final concluded in today's event.
The ladies battled teams from China, Korea and Canada with China dominating most of the races. Katherine Reutter (Champaign, IL) won the 1000m and the team managed to keep it close with their rivals, fighting for second or third place.
"The relay became the deciding race," said Jack Mortell, U.S. team leader. "The U.S. was unable to break into the top two but their third-place finish in the relay lifted them onto the podium."
For the men, each race was hotly contested against teams from Korea, Canada and China with positions changing after every lap. Apolo Ohno (Seattle, WA) and J.R. Celski (Federal Way, WA) both had important 1000m wins and Ohno put down an impressive victory in the 500m. Just like the ladies' competition, the men's race came down to the relay.
"This was a neck and neck race," Mortell said. "Back and forth, back and forth. Unfortunately, the 2008 World Championship Team from the U.S. fell with 12 (laps) to go, dashing any repeat in 2009."
For the final standings, Korea won the championship title for the men with Canada taking silver. The ladies' competition, the team from China skated off with the victory, followed by Korea in second place.
Besides Reutter, the U.S ladies' team consisted of Kimberly Derrick (Memphis, TN), Jessica Smith (Melvindale, MI), Alyson Dudek (Hales Corners, WI) and Lana Gehring (Glenview, IL). Ohno, Celski, Travis Jayner (Midland, MI) and Jordan Malone (Denton, TX) made up the men's team.
This event marks the end of international events for the short track speedskating season.
"Every U.S. skater skated like a champion," Mortell said. "We look forward to the Olympic season."

I am so proud of our USA ladies! Way to go! And our guys did a wonderful job, especially considering that they were a man short. I'm glad that Jeff got to stand on the podium with his teammates! ...and it's so nice to see their "smiling mugs"! Here are the newest photos, including podium shots. www.knsb.nl/live-2009/wk/shorttrack/content/foto/The AJ girls have enlarged many of them, and added screencaps from the vids, if anyone cares to mosey on over there.

I'm not positive, but I think Kwak is the one waving...
