So if Jeff sits out the Team Championships due to his wrist injury, would Ryan or Jordan step in? or do we lose a contestant somehow?

So if Jeff sits out the Team Championships due to his wrist injury, would Ryan or Jordan step in? or do we lose a contestant somehow? They step up, which is why we send more than 4 skaters to the event. I heard rumor that Travis might be asked to skate if Ryan Bedford decides to skate a long track competition at that time. I have no idea what Ryan decided to do. Guess we'll have to wait and see who pops up on the 'blinking numbers'.

I think Apolo will be skating - but I thought he would be at World Cups 5 & 6, too, so 'goes to show what I know! Hmmm, I see that my sheep (above) has disappeared - I guess he was a little 'BAAAAA-shful'! However, I coaxed him to come back out...

I thought I would bring over the schedule from the ISU brochure:
Friday, March 13 9:00 Official Training 18:00 Draw for Brackets #1 & 2
Saturday, March 14 10:30-13:00 Bracket #1 (5:30am EDT) 14:00-16:00 Bracket #2 (9:00am EDT) 19:00-21:30 Repechage (2:00pm EDT) 21:30 Draw for Final
Sunday, March 15 10:30-13:00 B-Final (5:30am EDT) 14:00- 16:00 A-Final (9:00am EDT)
The Netherlands is in the same time zone as Vienna but since there is no Daylight Savings Time in Europe, we catch a break and now we have a 5 hour difference instead of 6 hours
Now if someone could just explain what's the difference between Bracket 1 and Bracket 2 ??
I know I learned from last year's World Teams that the races are run very, very differently. Racers are assigned by their coaches to the heat they will skate in real time depending who has been placed in the heat by the other countries coaches. Very much a chess match strategy. Each skater, therefore, only skates one heat at each distance with points accumulated for the team based on their finish.
Sorry if that is repetitive for most of our posters but I know last year, as a newbie to Teams, I was as confused as hell as to what the hell was going on during the meet......LOL!!
I'll be checking out that TV portal in hopes that either the Netherlands or Korea will be broadcasting live again.

dove, lori, justsayin'...thanks for all the info! warm cookies eh? yum is right
gasp...i think wags and co. scheduled a 10-day trip and will be coming back home before this event (shucks)...
this complex is sooo large that it takes away the intimacy that a smaller st oval provides. i hope bedford commits to st...at this point there should be no wavering back and forth from the 2 disciplines/TEAM...i'm quite shocked that he would even consider lt at this point! i enjoyed the 'chest game' team format from last year's event.

Now if someone could just explain what's the difference between Bracket 1 and Bracket 2 ?? They did this last year too with the brackets, and it was confusing at first. The national teams are divided between two different brackets. Bracket one for the ladies would skate first. Say it consists of the USA, Japan, Italy and China's Teams. Bracket one for the men would skate next and for instance might consist of Korea, Italy, Japan and China Then bracket two for the ladies would skate and might consist of Korea, Canada, France and Germany. (just an example) Then bracket 2 of the men would skate, which could include the USA, Canada, Germany and France. The process would repeat for each distance. It might be just a way to break up the racing and give the skaters from each bracket more time to recouperate after they race. Like poor JR DIDN'T get to do between that kick ass 3000m where he was obviously completely spent - only to have to turn around shortly therafter and kick ass again in the relay. (which he apparantly did!) aaahhhhh, youth! LOL

Thanks Mtnme. They "draw" for the brackets at 6pm on Friday evening there, after the "official" practice.
That does make it interesting. So if the US draws a bracket including Korea, Canada and China, for example, it's a completely different meet than if they end up in a bracket with Italy, Russia and Germany. hmmmm. kinda like the luck of the draw for the relay heats in other competitions.
Being a game and card player, I love the idea of the Coach's strategy on top of the individual skaters strategy. It would be great to see live but even greater to be able to read Coach Jae's mind during the event.

'Just heard that Travis will be skating in Ryan's place. Good luck to Ryan in the LT event, and Gooooooooo Travis in Heerenveen! This is what I've heard about the venue... Unlike the Calgary and Salt Lake City Ovals where the short track ice is inside the long track oval, the Thialf in Heerenveen has a separate short track rink with its own stands that are very close to the action on the ice.Another photo from the '07 World Cup - Photo Credit: Phil Bedford Front: Kimberly, Carly, Mary... Back, L to R: Ryan B, Coach Larry, Cherise, Katherine, Lana, Travis, J.P., Jordan, Coach Jae, Jeff, Trainer Sarah--------------------------------------- Here's a copy of what I posted last year about how this event is run. It's also posted at Rocker-U on the 'Scorekeeping 101' page - unless there have been any changes, it should hold true this year too: In each division (men's and ladies) there are 8 national teams, placed into 2 brackets with 4 teams each. The teams are ranked or seeded somehow - teams 1-3-5-7 are in one bracket, and teams 2-4-6-8 are in the other. (You can bet that of the 4 most dominant teams - China, Korea, USA, and Canada - 2 will be in Bracket A and 2 will be in Bracket B) In the Qualifying Round: Each bracket competes in 4 events - 1000M, 500M, 3000M and a relay. (3000M ladies; 5000M men) In the 1000 & 500, each country selects 4 of their 5 team members to compete, and each event is run in 4 heats, with 1 member of each team in each heat. However, the 3000M is a single race with 8 skaters, 2 from each team. Points are awarded in the 500 and 1000 as follows: 1st = 5; 2nd = 3; 3rd = 2; 4th = 1. The same points scale is used for 1st-4th in the 3000M, but no points are awarded for 5th-8th. Then the 4 teams run the relay, and the point scale is: 1st = 10; 2nd = 6; 3rd = 4; 4th = 2. In each bracket, the top finishing team is advanced to the A Finals and the bottom team is relegated to the B Finals. Then the middle 2 teams compete in a Repechage round with the middle 2 teams in the other bracket. In the Repechage Round and the Final Round, the slate is wiped clean, points from previous rounds are disregarded, and all teams start with 0 points. In the Repechage Round, the 4 teams go through exactly the same round of events, in exactly the same way. The top 2 teams are advanced to the A Finals, the bottom 2 teams to the B Finals. In the Final Round (both A & B), the teams skate as above. The points gained in this round determine the final rankings and medalists. 1st-4th place come from the A Group, and 5th-8th place come from the B Group. Obviously, it's best to finish 1st in the Qualifying Round, 'cause you get a 'bye' into the finals.
