EDIT: In the 1000m B Final, the double DQ of JR and Apolo was for Team Skating. I had heard that Apolo was deek'd for an 'assist', but didn't make the connection. TEAMSKATING??? WTH??? That's the first time I've ever seen it called. I just saw ths video. FOr those of you who saw it, how do you figure that the judges thought it was team skating? 2 Americans vs. 2 Chinese. Celski and Ohno hung back in 3rd and 4th. Celski finally made a move into first, and Apolo hung back...he wasn't even close to another skater. There was no jostling in this race. I thought the only thing that was remarkable was that, clearly, Apolo made no move to go from 4th up into 1st or 2nd in order to dvance. And I thought that strange. How do you figure they thought that was team skating? And clearly AO wasn't pleased. They showed JR stepping off the iceinto the heat box, just as it was announced they were dq'd. He sat down and bent over to undo his skates...Apolo walked right by him, skates still on, out of the heat box, passed the camera and out of sight.

WTH is right! Do they consider it team skating when Apolo makes little attempt at giving the rest of the pack a run for it's money. (Unless it's a relay, I don't think he usually gets all fired up for B finals anyway) But what a shame for JR. That was great skating, and a super clean pass - and he did it on his own merit. Boo-hiss-boo to the ref's. I dunno about you, but I thought there were clearly some questionable BS calls. ...might the rest of the world be getting a tad peeved that our men's team is getting so strong? Me thinks they doth protest too much.... But it's nice to see what actually transpired instead of guessing....and Chla22 is right - it sure beats the blinking numbers (or non-blinking as the case may be).

Man. I'm gonna have to check that link out. I just found out I actually do get Universal Sports! So exciting. ;D
About the team skating call: that was honestly the first thing that came to my mind when I saw the call and then looked at the times, but I'd have to actually look at footage to feel completely confident in that. I thought it was funny and I still kind of do. I'd like to believe that it didn't happen, but you never know. And even though it was the B final - their place helps out their ranking regardless. However, it's not like Apolo really needed the points that bad, so I'm still on the fence.

Ok, the mission for the Nationals contingency is to get the inside scoop....not were they team skating (because we know that they weren't), but what transpired to make the judges think that they werre.
There was a length (20 seconds/) shot of Apolo, Day 2, when he was sitting in the heat box waiting to hear if he was going to be advanced when another skater dq'd. The shot is a straight on shot...quick personal grooming when he took the bandana off, slid it back down over the top of his head and repositions some strands....absoltuely lovely, I have to say. There is not a shred of fat on this guy...and I have always been a fan of his longer hair...keep growing it, keep growing it!

Okay. In the 1000m semis, when Apolo came in 4th, he was CLEARLY knocked out of the race by Song, who was DQ'd. The announcers were surprised that AO wasn't advanced. That's what it looked like by the numbers as well. Grrrrrrr. Thanks for the eyes-on. EDIT: In the 1000m B Final, the double DQ of JR and Apolo was for Team Skating. I had heard that Apolo was deek'd for an 'assist', but didn't make the connection. TEAMSKATING??? WTH??? That's the first time I've ever seen it called. Apolo "assisted" from the back of the pack? How? I don't even think they could get him on "failure to compete" (whatever that rule is called) because his time was competitive with that of the other skaters. I've never seen "team skating" called either, not that it shouldn't have been called any number of times. Yeesh!

I just watched the races from Nagano. I’m happy with the efforts of team USA. In a sport where things can go any way at any time, I have to judge by more than just the outcome. Top of the podium is great when you can get it but a good try is important too. Special nod to Allison and J.R. (questionable DQ’s none the less). Veteran and New Kid both gave their best. And of course our boy. Apolo wasn’t a happy camper throughout most of the races but he skated well and it’s always great to see him. Love his new boots! Gotta break them in though.
Confession: The false starts are nerve shaking for the skaters but I secretly enjoy how they extend the time the guys are out there. I know… I’m so wrong.
It was unfortunate that Lobello tripped on that block but I couldn’t help smiling when the offending block cruised across the finish line ahead of him. Even better when they played it back in slow motion.
Finally, I must have replayed the start of day two at least six times. There was a blood curdling scream right after the starter pistol and it had me rolling. I’m sure it was just cheering but the timing was perfect.

Surprised 'team skating' was called too, Lori. But they were team skating in the B final?!! Probably a good time to 'practice' it though, if one were to do it--why should the Koreans have that monopoly?!!! Ugh! Off to watch some of the Nagano WC at universalsports.com Quoting part of my previous post because I just saw the video of JR and Apolo's double-DQ...WHAT?!! Yes, Apolo was pretty indifferent in that B final---he didn't care to make a move on the competition, but how does that get called as team skating?!!!

Hi All; I would so like to see that footage of Nagano, especially after trying to second guess the flashing numbers, but when I go to play it, it says coverage blocked..( I"m in Canada).. does anyone know if these have been put up on you tube? Hard to find things there because you have to have exact title almost to find what you want. There's lots of clips from Salt Lake and Vancouver... Would really appreciate a link for Nagano...or Bejing Thanks, Musical Mom

So, I watched the B final again. Just as JR starts to pick up the pace to set up a pass, Apolo gives him a little pat on the butt, like "Go get 'em, kid - I'm just gonna sit back here in 4th". If that is the criteria for an "assist" - I think the ref's are getting a bit petty. Apolo sitting back in 4th sure didn't hurt the Chinese any, and if he did decide to mix it up - it would have just been double trouble for the Chinese . There were so many DQ's for the men's team for infractions that would have been a stretch to call them as such, it makes ya wonder what they did to p!ss off the refs so much.

I think some history is in order here. You'll recall that Apolo and Rusty were accused of holding back in the 2002 Olympic trials to enable Shani Davis to make the team. There was an investigation as to why Apolo won every race but came in like 2nd or 3rd in the crucial race. He and Rusty were cleared for lack of evidence. It does look strange when the World Champion doesn't finish on the podium. I heard today (just gossip) that he only wanted to skate U.S. Nationals and World Championships but that his coach made him skate the World Cups.

Hey August, let's not forget Katherine Reutter, she brought home a silver from the Asian version of Mission Impossible! What a crazy few weeks it has been!
