If anyone is interested in a bald view of the meltdown that has been occurring within US Speedskatings Non-Governmental Body, see Eva Rodansky's blog and get an irate insider's views. She is/was an LT-er not ST but had to deal with the same difficulties that are at the root of the Chad=Shani mess, Shani-USS mess, and Apolo's problems too. Until these are worked out, it is pretty clear that Apolo will not return to ST (in fact, the programis in such disarray now with no $, no sponsors, no coaches and no directors, there is nothing to return to even if he wished to put up with it). I think he should just go to Calgary and work out his own sponsorships and training and hang out with Shani, but he seems to connect C-springs with part of his success for winning. Find the blog at the following URL. Read the entire page as appropriate. There is more than one related topic. evarodansky.blogspot.com/In the interest of keeping this thread alive and broad enough to interest as well as keeping it from getting too depressing, I highly encourage comments on other reasons he may retire and, better yet, why he shouldn't. Apolo is waiting for a sign. If he has time on his hands, can he resist a peak at his fan sites? If he can't, lets make sure he sees lots of support, encouragement, and reminders of what is great about skating. (Also plenty of praise for his booty in a skinsuit wouldn't be inppropriate, IMLO. (In my lascivious opinion.)

Reasons Why Apolo Shouldn't Retire: 1. He's still great at it. It's not like, at 24, he's losing a step or two. Christ, Bedard is 30! 2. He shouldn't retire because the loyal American fans like Noelle and whoever else with a decent camera might not go to the events any longer. And then where will I get my Canook eye candy? 3. His body has never looked better. 4. He just wouldn't fit in in Hollywood. The sh*t just wouldn't work. 5. See number 2. 6. He's supposed to be a millionaire, right? (According to a certain fuzzy Canadian) He doesn't have to worry about cash. If you're young, healthy and you don't have to work...You should play. Travel the world and party with your friends. Party with the Canadians. I would 7. SEE NUMBER 2!!

And another thing.
Have you ever heard of an actor or somebody being involved with some "project" and KNOWN that it was just gonna fail miserably? Like, did Jennifer Aniston seriously look at Rumor Has It and think, "A movie about sleeping with a man who possibly slept with both my mother and my GRANDMOTHER? Boy, that's money in the bank right there!"? Because I knew it was gonna suck spectacularly.
And Apolo's acting career reeks of potential failure. And it really, really sucks that he's gotta go out like that.
/end rant.

ruffian - you don't need to worry about Noelle quitting short track if Apolo does decide to. She is a great fan of short track and especially the Canucks. I'm sure you will get to enjoy pics of them for years to come. She really does a great job with her camera.

Not wanting Apolo to go into movies doesn't necessarily mean that he's going to fail at it.
He's been getting offers since the 2002 Olympics. If he just wanted to do movies to be doing them, he would've bitten before now.
He's admitted he's got offers on the table now but is still working things out. It's well known that he's a perfectionist, and we know he's got class.
I'm interested in seeing what type of film he would agree to do.
And we'd see a lot more of him. If he goes back to short track any time soon, we won't be seeing much of him for several years.

No, no, I don't think he's going to fail because I don't want him to be in the movies. I think he's gonna fail because his chances of success are so unlikely.
Does anyone honestly believe that Apolo is the next great American actor?

I heard he might retire because he wants to persue going to school or something like that. But he said he'll still get on the ice for fun or whatever.

Does anyone honestly believe that Apolo is the next great American actor? Who knows? I just hope that if he does become an actor, he first gets some training, and then hold out for something decent. I don't want to see he in any made for TV junk. I don't want to see him in something stupid. He needs to be in something where he can retain some dignity.

There are plenty of ways to be involved in the entertainment industry without acting. There's a lot of behind the scenes work, too. He could become a film maker or producer or director. He could start his own agency specifially for ametur atheletes. There's also the broadcasting/journalism route. Then there's live theatre with a myriad of options and business ventures available there. He could also go the motivational speaker route. There's a lot available to him other than just acting.

I re-named this thread "Apolo's Future - Short Track or Hollywood?" so we could broaden our discussion based on the last few posts.

I personally think Apolo would make a great broadcaster. He has become very comfortable in front of the camera and working the talk show circuit. We can all attest to how well his personality comes across during interviews.
With his knowledge of sports and his appealing personality I think he could have a great career in sports broadcasting.
Personally I'd rather see him continue skating but can understand his wanting to try something else.

I don't wish for Apolo to retire for many things. I don't think he'll ever read this but just in that case. I don't want Apolo to be a Hollywood actor. I really don't believe that he would fail. I very much think that he'll be going from day to night.
So many people associate him with being this golden boy who has done so much for his sport. If it weren't because of him, I would have never known what Short Track was. I identify the sport with him. There after I identified him to any other sport. I want to be like him. I wanna have the will power that he has when it comes to succeeding in something he loves.
I'm pretty sure he has heard this many times before but he does truly inspire me to do more with my life. Bloody He_ll, I started exercising after watching the Olympics. i even want to learn how to skate. I want to be active.
I don't think any other Hollywood actor has made me feel this way before. I really think he could do so much more for his sport. Yeah, his already accomplish so much in his career and I love him for that and wish more joy into his life. Now with all this turmoil going around the USS, I think he, with the power that he has now as a very important athlete, could sorta become a goodwill ambassador for his fellow skaters.
He could do so much for sports in America. I was born in Greece but reside in London. I have been to America twice and let me tell you. Nobody cares for any other sport that is not Basketball, Football or Baseball. Thats it. I do not hate America. My mum is American and so is her family. What I am trying to say is that in my country Soccer is important the same way the Olympic games are and tennis and rugby or any other sport.
He could do so much more for American sport. i think we as fans would go and see his "films" just because his in them. Now I'm not saying that we are going to fly to the cinema to watch them the way we do when the new Spider Man comes out, but eventually we will.
He represents sportsmanship not shallow actors who only care about shagging and being on magazines.
Pardon me for such a long and boring post

I think that Apolo will do just fine in Hollywood, with sports broadcasting opportunities, guest appearances, etc., and perhaps even better. He should take acting lessons because it will benefit him regardless of the particular avenues that he wishes to pursue. I do hope that he keeps an open mind about Vancouver. The situation with USS is tragic...may it turn around *quickly*.
