Some of them COMPLETELY missed that! I thought Daniel and his "poor purple c0cktail dress" should've been eliminated. What were some of them thinking? I really liked Joe's outfit. Jennifer's wasn't that bad...she just should've used more American colors (hint red white and blue).

About Jennifer, I'm thinking that they didn't see the promise; she has repeatedly disappointed them; last week her inspiration was a clock and they said it was very matronly...so you see they alluded to tonight's design being borderline matronly. I think they couldn't see her breaking out of her shell....

I thought Apolo did really well. He looked and sounded very natural and at ease.
Two of my daughters were watching the show too and were teasing me that my "boyfriend" was on!!! I love the show and would have watched it anyways. However, it was nice to be able to watch Apolo too.

www.bravotv.com/Project_Runway/season/5/blogs/index.php?blog=guest_judges&article=2008/08/apolo_ohno_go_for_the_gold
Apolo Ohno: Go for the Gold
Bravotv.com: Are you a Project Runway fan? If so, what was your favorite episode or moment?
AAO: I am a fan of Project Runway. Anything that allows an amateur to shine and reach another level is fantastic. I'm being biased but I can't help but like my episode.
Bravotv.com: How does fashion play a role in your life? How would you describe your on-ice/off-ice style?
AAO: Fashion plays an interesting role in my life. People have a perception of certain athletes that they see on television or even when I was on Dancing with the Stars. Being fashionable off the ice is the time when I am able to show my personality and sense of style. Training times are almost like taking a break because I can wear whatever is put together in the midst of a workout. It's off the ice when we can make these transformations into a good look.
Bravotv.com: What was the key to winning this challenge? What are the most important characteristics of a successful opening ceremony ensemble?
AAO: Keys to winning any challenge are preparation, insight, research, attention to detail, and being unique in a way that aligns with the challenge. The most important characteristic of a successful opening ceremony ensemble would have to be the bold statement of USA. We are a melting pot of cultures and ethnicities but we stand under one flag that is true to us -- displaying that feeling and emotion in a wardrobe is very difficult without being "too patriotic" ...
Bravotv.com: Can you describe a little what the opening ceremony is like?
AAO: I've often been asked this question and it is hard to describe! Lights, emotions, energy, flow, surreal, amazing ... geez! Grab me a thesaurus and dictionary!
Bravotv.com: Which designs stood out the most? Both good and bad?
AAO: Ha! The designs that stood out the most were the ones that had nothing to do with the Olympic games or Team USA. They were very unique (even for a regular fashion show) but the ones that stood out the most, and were on the correct track towards the challenges goals, made the entire wardrobe sexy, classy, team-orientated, and [used] striking, bold colors.
Bravotv.com: What was the biggest mistake the designers made?
AAO: Did not do ENOUGH research on what athletes will NEED to wear into the Olympic games. Knowing the intricate details of walking, the emotions, and even what it means to step alongside fellow Olympians will change the way they design for this particular challenge.
Bravotv.com: How will you be spending the Summer Olympics?
AAO: Training hard and cheering all of my friends and teammates in the summer games. I'll be glued to the Internet and TV.
Bravotv.com: If you could see one trend in the opening ceremony ensembles go, what would it be?
AAO: Giving the athletes a chance to be modern with the choices, sexy, powerful. Honestly, some of the outfits and ensembles that these designers came up with (and with one day's time) were amazing! Very impressed with the choices of colors, fabrics, and designs. These athletes have amazing sculptured bodies and laser-focused eyes to match -- let them show a bit!
Bravotv.com: Have you been keeping up with your dancing?
AAO: Not as much. Training for the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver BC doesn't allow me much other time.

Here is Kato's design: Tim Gunn's description: Korto WINS! She created an extremely sophisticated look: a white cotton/linen blend pant, a stretch satin camisole, and a white leather vest with red shoulder insets and a black mandarin collar. There was an unexpected aspect to the all-white look, and the construction and fit were perfection. Furthermore, you could easily see how this look could successfully morph into menswear, which is not an unimportant element in this challenge. Congratulations, Korto! Apolo: I love the linen .. it looked very comfortable, very functional; i love how you use the vest; the linen was unique,; really hip for '08. I was a big fan; I was impressed. ----------------- Jennifer's design: Tim's Comments: Jennifer is OUT. Oh, I reflect upon our museum visit and Jennifer's demise all makes sense to me: She saw the historical images (some of them being adorable dresses that looked like they were going to a garden party) and she saw the "Nike" refrain (the flying foot of the Greek goddess who personifies victory) and became entranced. Jennifer designed a gold and white striped high-waisted skirt (with an odd "purse" on the back, I'll add) and paired it with a navy shrunken jacket with the museum's Nike symbol appliquéd in sequins on each lapel. Yes, it was a touch of Schiaparelli, but the whole look was too girly and too child-like. Jennifer, we'll miss your intellect and your good humor, really! AO's comments: when we walk we want to walk strong, proud and tall and we want to feel confident; I wasn't able to grasp that in the design. It was just bland. -------------------------------- Daniel Daniel finds it difficult to step away from his comfort zone. Yes, he possesses a sophisticated, high-end point of view, but does than exclude everything other than cocktail dresses. His blue dress with red satin piping (although whether the dress was blue or purple is debatable), was lovely, but hardly innovative and head-scratchingly odd for the Olympics. If her were designing uniforms for Olympic Air, then I'd be a believer. AO's comments: Nothing athletic about it; I wasn't able to get anything Olympic about it. Maybe if you played with the colors a little bit. i wasn't a fan of the colors, the design... ----------------------------------- Jerrell Tim's Comments: Jerell, oh Jerell! Did he listen to the content of the challenge? I'm still reeling over the look that he created: a high-waisted skirt in vertical stripes with a horizontally striped waistband; a pink top with ruffled cap sleeves; and red, white and blue polka-dot bib kerchief, black leggings(!), and this all topped off with a wide-brimmed hat. In another context, this look could be fun and sexy, but for the Olympics? Preposterous! AO's comments: Definitely very unique; for me, it doesn't scream anything athletic; for me it would come from a movie set. it looked like he had a really hard time grasping anything about athletics and it showed; ---------------------------------- Joe: Tim's Comments: Joe embraced an all white palette. He designed a skort (a combination of skirt and short) with a wide cuff and a jacket with red, white and blue stripe details. The stripes were rather painterly (i.e. random) in their placement, but the red trim on the collar, cuffs and hem helped give the jacket some definition. And he spelled out "U.S.A." on the skort. The look was nothing if not patriotic, but it was also nothing if not dull ... AO's comments: personally I relaly liked it; this outfit really shows off the women's physique; the athletes have great bodies and there's no reason why they should be hiding behind antyhing. 1st thing I thought he had...he had how much time? He did something incredible in a short amt of time. He made it look almost easy. ----------- Terry: Tim's Comments; Terri designed the most classic American look of the group. It was successful, it was stunning, it was appropriate, and it was ambitious. She created a menswear tailored jacket with a wide lapel over a horizontal striped strapless top, accessorized with an ascot-like scarf. Below, she had a beautifully fitting white pant with a tuxedo stripe on the right leg, only. I swooned. So as happy as I am for Korto, why didn't Terry win? AO's comments: I love the colors that you used; it really popped, it would read well; looks American, which is really important: athletes would be very comfortable in this. I appreciated the simplicity of the outfit, and it was very stylish at the same time

This makes it sound like Apolo will be staying here in the States and not going to Beijing.

#1FAN...that article was a great find. Usually when we see him talk about DWTS he is talking more in the vernacular, everyday street language..."having to learn to move my arms in funny ways", etc.
This interview really showed him in much more depth about the Olympic experience and what he would have expected in Olympic fashion. It really showed a different side of him.

I've just checked the on screen tv guide and Project Runway is not listed for 9 p.m. on Bravo here in Vancouver...hopefully, please, someone record it and put it up on you tube ( I can't use megadownload ). I'm so frustrated...also checked all NBC stations and checked from 6 pm forward and am just out of luck. Hopefully, I can come back here for a full report! I did see the trailer...thanks. Musical Mom

Thanks number1 for the article. I liked when he said "Grab me a thesaurus and dictionary!" I think he described what it is like to be at an opening cermony very well.

y'all are welcome for that bravotv.com interview w/apolo!
he took his position as 'guest judge' very seriously...and he knows what he likes!
korto's winning outfit is great in sooo many ways... those pants will flatter any athlete (great seaming, wide leg, high-waist)...and the chic little leather vest is icing on the cake...PERFECT!

And the best thing about Project Runway tonight---Apolo is back to being an Olympian. Not one word about DWTS. Thank you Tim Gun, Heidi, Michael and Nina!
