Okay, here are some notes.
Tim introduced him and Apolo introduced what the challenge was. What was cute is that Tim always stands and talks to the designers, hands clutched in front of his waist. When Apolo was standing beside him, he had the same exact stance. Too cute.
Apolo introduced the challenge...designing for the female athletes of the Beijing opening ceremonies. The Armory fieldhouse also has an olumpic clothing museum in it so the dedisgners got to spend some time there and get an historic perspective.
Some of the designers were familiar with the Olympics, one was thrilled it was Apolo as she had followed him and said he really "sold it" (good way) at the 2002 games.
One deisgner had never seen the Olympics or the opening ceremony...he suspected that they ran around the track with a flag and torch.
Apolo gave them the sense of it: he said it was the "modeling catwalk for athletes"...how proud they are of their country, how proud they are to be seen, how much fun they have, what the spirit is like. At the point that he mentioned 'modeling catwalk', they showed the pic of him at the 2006 Olympic ceremonies with the blue hat on, big, mouthy smile, closeup, waving and laughing at the crowd. Great timing!
At the end of the intro piece he said "see you on the Runway"...which for those who don't watch it, is sort of the expression always used by Heidi Klum.
He must have had some coaching in how to introduce it...I don't think he was reading cue cards, but it was clear that he was well rehearsed...lots of smiles and enthusiasm by the Boy.
Pausing now for the next 20 minutes of wathcing the deisgners pick out their material and going thru the normal pain of designing under the pressure of the clock.

One designer is saying that it is SERIOUS business, designing for how the country will be represnted to the world. One designer has kids who play baseball and softball and he wants to make his kids proud. One designer isn't athletic, thinks that the challenge is nothing more than a uniform, making everyone look the same. Designer: "something American be proud of". . Also it was noted in the intro that past deisgners of real American Olympic wear have been Halston and ? I think Halston did this Olympics outfits. Interesting that one of the deisgners is from SLC.

The designer that said Apolo "sold it" also said "the boy is hot."
The said Armani for Italy and Ralph Lauren for the USA. They didn't mention Halston.

It seems that the designer that said the boy is hot has a crush on Apolo because the camera showed her when they introduced Apolo. She smiled and said "hi Apolo".

I'm on the west coast... but I did see Apolo just now on Rickey.org... Woohoo. We have a little over 2 hours until the show here. Darn that Rickey! He's saying, "How can Apolo judge?", and he keeps laughing!

Okay, the models have strutted their stuff and here are some of AO's comments...
Remember that we were wondering if he would offering constructive criticism, or just like everything....
a few shots of Apolo writing his comments on cards ....
Apolo is VERY serious and involved with watching the models....
No smiling now...dead serious doing his judging job....
He is concentrating so hard...almost at the beginning of a race....
Now everything has been scored and the judges are ready to review (among themselves) once again the top 6.
6 remaining designers have highest and lowest marks: Apolo's comments only:
on Terri: I love the colors that you used; it really popped, it would read well; looks American, which is really important: athletes would be very comfortable in this:
on Jennifer: when we walk we want to walk strong, proud and tall and we want to feel confident; I wasn't able to grasp that in the design.
on Joe: personally I relaly liked it; this outfit really shows off the women's physique; the athletes have great bodies and there's no reason why they should be hiding behind antyhing.
on Daniel: Nothing athletic about it; I wasn't able to get anything Olympic about it. Maybe if you played with the colors a little bit.
on Kato: AO smiling at this design: i love the linen .. was very comfortable, very functional; i love how you use the vest; the linen was unique,, comfortable; really hip for '08. I was a big fan;
On ??: Definitely very unique; for me, it doesn't scream anything athletic; for me it would come from a movie set.
------------------------ Now they leave the runway and judges review once more: AO's remarks only:
Kato: i was really impressed
Terry: I appreciated the simplicity of the outfit, and it was very stylish at the same time
Jo: 1st thing I thought he had...he had how much time? He did something incredible in a short amt of time. He made it look almost easy.
Jerrell: it looked like he had a really hard time grasping anything about athletics and it showed;
jennifer: just bland....
Daniel: i wasn't a fan of the colors, the design...
Now they bring them back out.
Kato is the winner. Jennifer is out.
I have to say that I think Apolo had alot more input as to the design than the past 2 guest judges. But then that may be because this was a very specific challenge and he had specific experience with the challenge.
He did a GREAT job...he can do my clothes shopping any time.

Does anyone have American Express and can access the aftershow? (After the Sew)? Apparently you can only watch it if you have that card... But the special guests are supposed to be on there. Someone do a screen record and capture it for us!

Someone do a screen record and capture it for us! Yes, I will try to do a transcript. OHNO! He's not on...It's Tim Gunn and another designer, instead! Perhaps he will join in...If this is a LIVE program, he may be in BEIJING> Jennifer, the losing deisgner, is calling in LIVE from Italy, so perhaps Apolo will call in...its 10:10 Thurs am, so we can hope....

I have to agree that Apolo was very serious while watching the models walk the runway. I also thought he had that before the race face on, and I am really glad that he spoke more than other guest judges have in the past. I would love to go shopping with Apolo. He does have a great sense of style and I agree with Heidi when she said that he was the most stylish gold medal winner.
