Toehold4 and I discussed starting a 'horse-lovers' thread on another board. I'm gonna do it here. Feel free to post your horse stories/photos...
--------------------------------
I'll start by telling the story of my first horse, Buck (the horse in my avatar)... I was 12 years old. I lived on a rural golf course, and my best friends lived on a dairy. I had wanted a horse my whole life, and Mr. Moore (my friend's dad) rolled up a whole trailer full of horses one day. As I saw them being unloaded a beautiful buckskin gelding caught my eye. It was the horse Mr. Moore had bought for himself, but problems surfaced almost immediately...that horse HATED men! He was out of control, particularly when a man was around. The next day, the guys decided to teach 'Buck' a lesson. They put him in a paddock, attached a rope to a pylon, and roped him while he was running from them. He flipped over when he got to the end of the rope, and they descended on him like a pack of wolves, saddling and bridling him. But no one could get on him. He pranced and sidestepped, and these big burly guys weren't lithe enough to manage it. I was so d*** proud of that horse, though. Over the next week, I spent every spare moment with Buck, sitting on the fence, sitting in the paddock with a sack of grain, and I befriended him. Mr. Moore noticed, and asked me if I wanted to try to ride him. DUH! He sidestepped me, too, but I finally just grabbed the saddlehorn and threw myself up on him 'Indian-style'. By the time I settled in, he was at a full gallop. Over time, he became my best 'guy', and I became his best 'girl'. He'd nicker and come to me in the paddock whenever he'd see me, and eventually he'd sit still when I would get on his back...
...However, he was of no use to Mr. Moore. One day he decided to sell Buck, and since I was the only one who could get near him, he asked me if I'd ride him in the auction ring. I had tears running down my cheeks as I maneuvered him in that arena, and I was so surprised when at the end Mr. Moore said 'no sale'... The next day my dad handed me an envelope with money. He said "Happy Birthday, Merry Christmas...Happy Birthday, Merry Christmas - go buy your horse". My mom added "Buck has to take the place of a 'boyfriend' until you're at least 16 - deal?" Deal. I found out later that Mr. Moore had called my dad the night of the auction and told him he couldn't bear to sell Buck out from under me, and that he'd accept any offer my dad made. AND that my dad had given up money that he had saved for YEARS for a trip back to his hometown. *sniff* (He did eventually get to take that trip.)
The next few years of my life were barefoot and carefree. Swiping oranges from Mr. Parrish's grove; sloshing up the creek to our favorite sunbathing beach while the horses lounged in the water; barrel racing at the local gymkhanna. Buck was my transportation everywhere, and he mellowed out to where even the smallest child could ride him. I even taught a few riding lessons on him! But about the time I turned 16, cheerleading, a driver's license and a boyfriend relegated Buck to the backseat of my life. Eventually, a man showed up at our house and asked if he could buy Buck. I'll never forget that night. I rode him for a mile in the dark, bareback with nothing but a halter and a lead rope, crying and saying goodbye all the way...
When my mother passed away I saw an entry in her journal about that night. It read "Tonight Lori sold Buck. As that trailer rolled away I held back tears, realizing that it was the end of an era in my little girl's life. I can only hope that the one who takes Buck's place is as beautiful, and loving, and gentle, and loyal as Buck was..."
I ran into Buck's replacement in Gainesville, Florida a few years later...his name is Larry, and he is everything my mother dreamed he would be...

I grew up on a cattle ranch in Arizona, and had my horse(s) right outside my door for the first 14 years of my life, and then was lucky enough to take my horse, Snip, to boarding school with me, and she and one of her babies followed me to Colorado during college. I really stopped riding after college, and Snip got to retire with friends down the road from Aspen, so her life was good and full. Now my love of horses has turned me to horseracing!! I follow it pretty closely, on TV, and well as betting over the interent(I know, be careful!). i keep a virtual stable online, that tracks 'my horses, workouts, and when they're racing!! i have a few close friends who are into it!! Lori...aren't you in So. CA?? We may be coming for Breeders Cup next Fall at Santa Anita!
I love everything about horses!!!

You know, I've followed EVERY Triple Crown race since I was a kid, but I have NEVER been to a racetrack. We're surrounded by so many good ones here - Hollywood Park, Del Mar, Santa Anita - there's really no excuse... EDIT: You know, I saw something recently about Del Mar - they've installed a synthetic track. They said that last year in their first week or two they had had 7 horses break down, and for the same time period this year since installing the new track - zero. Where did you go to school in Colorado? I checked out a couple of schools there (for horse'y as well as snowsport reasons) - Colorado State and WCU, but as I've said before, 'life happened'...

I love horses, especially Barbaro...he was beautiful. Sorry I don't have much else to add. I've never been horseback riding but it's on my list of things to do soon in the future.

That's the one reason I am leery to go see live racing...I don't think I could take it, to watch a horse break down, and then be put down in front of me...I know there is a dark side to racing (as with everything), but I will support anything that makes it safer for horses, but the reality is that these horses were meant for running and racing!! It's what they love!!!! But we have to be good stewards for them.
CA. passed a law that all dirt tracks have to go synthetic by end of this year or next, and most others (in US) are switching voluntariliy to synthetic, so that's all good!! Del Mar looks most fun, they have concerts, the track is right on the beach, etc.
As far as Barbaro, a true champion in ALL ways and well loved, much like our Apolo!!
Believe it or not (since I have no proof!) I actually have known Barbaro's owner's (The Jackson's) for years (through my dad), but never even knew they raced horses till about 4 weeks before Barbaro won the Derby!!! They also ran Showing Up in the Derby (undefeated, like Barbaro) which is why they got alot of press!
I followed the REAL life drama of Barbaro everyday after he was injured, and was crushed when he had to be put down...makes me cry even now...he was oh so close to making it, and being one of the greatest triumphs ever, but was not meant to be... I think his story touched many people in a deep and profound way... (also like our A!) I have tremendous respect for the Jackson's because of their love, devotion, and stewardship of Barbaro...great role models for horse owners everywhere!! Gretchen Jackson's great quote,
"Grief (and pain) is the price we pay for love " could not be more profound and/or true...
OK...enough of that!!!!!
On the upside I have a 2yr. old colt in my virtual stable...he is 1/2 brother to Barbaro...name is Man From Havana (i think), and Nicanor, is a yearling colt FULL brother to Barbaro, and owned by the Jackson's...experts say he will be the MOST watched 2 year old in 2008... If you know how Barbaro got his name, Nicanor is the name of another hunting dog in a Jackson family painting, the dog next to Barbaro (the dog) in the painting...we can only hope...

I remember hearing about Nicanor, during either the Derby or one of the reports on Barbaro. What's a 'virtual stable'? That's cool that you have connections to the Jacksons - they seem to be really caring and special people. Remember when I told you that I kissed Secretariat? Here is a pic from my day with him...I was feeding him Certs breath mints (his favorite treat). Funny thing, Affirmed was in the same stable, and I barely gave him a pat on the nose. Who knew that he would still be the most recent Triple Crown winner?

We once had a few horse lovers here. Anyone remember Warhorse? I miss her and Rose If you are lurking, hi from me! I think horses are some of the most beautiful animals in the world. Positively majestic. Recently I saw a special on PBS about wild horses, and it was great. I'm a city girl, and never had horses around me. Admittedly, I've always been a bit intimidated by large animals. My father is the exact opposite. A horse he's fine with, but when our tiny bird got out of his cage he ran through the house slamming doors behind him and didn't return until the bird was caught and re-caged. God that man is weird. Anyway, I've always wanted to go see the horses race. Hollywood Park is closest to me, in fact on the way to work, I see those huge horse trailers heading that way. I always try to peek through the vents hoping for a glimpse of one.

Lori, I actually had tears in my eyes when I read your story. It sounds like you had a lot of fun and a few great years with Buck...you must've been heartbroken when you had to let him go. I think horses are so beautiful. I've always wanted to go horseback riding, but I haven't done it yet...maybe someday.

We once had a few horse lovers here. Anyone remember Warhorse? I miss her and Rose If you are lurking, hi from me! Before I joined, I scanned the archives, and I saw Warhorse, and thought she was a kindred spirit...I'm disappointed she doesn't post anymore. Hollywood Park is closest to me, too, August! Again I'll say - I wonder if we've bumped into each other at the grocery store! LOL! Funny story about your dad - reminds me of my own snakes vs. spiders phobia ("Weird Things About U" thread) Thanks, butterfly, for your sentiments on my story. I had intended it to be a 'light' story, but it didn't turn out that way... I deleted it several times before I posted it for good, 'cause it was surprisingly emotional for me to write it - Mr. Moore's generosity, my dad's sacrifice, my mom's journal, my husband, and Buck himself, who is undoubtedly long gone by now...

What a great pic, Lori!!! I love that huge neck!!!!! Growing up with Quarter Horses, I love the big thick necks! That is the coolest thing that you got to touch him, and be near him!! How does that compare with being near and touching Apolo??? I still cry every year when they show the replay of him winning the Belmont by 31 lengths!!!!! I understand completely when you wrote about Buck, and trying to keep it light, but just couldn't...horses definitely touch something deep in our souls...What's the quote about nothing better for the inside of a man (or woman!) than the outside of a horse!!! How true!!! As far as the 'virtual stable' go to equibase.com and click on the 'virtual stable' and explore it. You can keep a 'stable ' of your own horses, and/or get almost daily updates on all the top horses that will be competing in the Breeder's Cup races at the end of October. In the Spring you can get updates on all the Triple Crown potential horses, and their prep races. See what you think...There are a TON of resources on the net to follow racing and all it entails if you're interested... As a matter of fact I forgot to tell folks in my earlier post that Barbaro had another full brother born this Spring (I forgot!), and you can see pics and video at this site: www.millridge.com/barbaros-family.aspx Barbaro's Family...Gotta love it!!

Re: the huge neck, yeah, 'Baby' had bulked up by then, but even in his racing days he was always known as a gentle one, which is why he was one of the few that was brought out for interaction that day... ...you asked for comparisons? IMO, our 'sk8er baby' was even MORE sweet when he made himself available for interaction that night...Secretariat, bless his larger-than-normal heart, didn't have a choice - Apolo did...I'm betting 'his' heart is larger-than-normal, too! Aaaah, "There's nothing better for the inside of a man than the outside of a horse" a quote attributed to Lord Palmerston in 1906, that was one of Ronald Reagan's favorites - and one of my favorites as well! Quarter Horses are my fave's. That's the only type horse I've ever owned... EDIT: I'm gonna check out this 'virtual stable' stuff. I always like to know who's coming up in the TC races...

What a nice thread. Lori, I loved your story. Very vivid and well written. And it's been nice to get to know Toehold4 *waves*
We have had some horse threads in the past. Warhorse was indeed a horse lover and she was fun to chat with. CaliforniaGrown (CG) was another who loved horses. Seems like Tabby had horses as well. And Ruffian originally took her name from the famous filly of that name from the '70s (there was a thread about that, too). In fact at one point, it seemed like the majority of posters here were into horses.
I have not had too much experience with horses myself, and I'm kinda with August on this one, I'm a little afraid. But I would love to go to the races sometime, and I am also close to Hollywood Park. Lori & August, if you guys are game, I'm so there!!!
Edited to add: August, Rose still posts on Live Journal and I catch her there from time to time. She is doing well.

I had a couple of friends when i was a kid who had horses and we would go riding sometimes. It was a lot of fun. Haven't rode since then but would love to go again with my kids. I'm not much of a horse person but I do think they are very beautiful animals, my favorite is the Black Stallion, just like in the movie.
I love the photos! Love the stories! I'm not into horse racing but have seen movies about them and its hard for me to see a horse fall and get so worn out from all the racing. My girls love the animated movie Spirit, I'm sure some of you've seen it, very cute.
