Does anyone know what happened to the pics i posted? i checked a couple of times and they were here, but now I can't see them, or my avi!!!! I'm seeing your pics, Toehold! Sorry, I've been out of town all weekend, and I'm just now catching up...the pics are beautiful, and so are the colts! It would be cool to do a Hollywood Park day! It would be a new experience for me... I'm old enough that I remember Ruffian's career, and I watched her final race live, and cried my eyes out when she broke down, just like I did Barbaro. Those horses really had the hearts of champions, not unlike someone else we know and love...I just pray that HE doesn't suffer any race or training injuries between now and 2010... Has anybody heard the song "Wild Horses" by Natasha Bedingfield??? It reminds me of a time in Mexico when I rented a horse and got it galloping along the beach. I just dropped the reins, closed my eyes, threw my hands out and let it run. That song HAS to be the mantra of my life...(well, that and 'Redneck Woman' by Gretchen Wilson, but that's another story...)

It would be cool to do a Hollywood Park day! It would be a new experience for me... Like I said, I'm so there!!! I'm gonna extend that to say I hope he NEVER gets injured - even beyond his Olympics career - but especially before the Vancouver Games. Has anybody heard the song "Wild Horses" by Natasha Bedingfield??? It reminds me of a time in Mexico when I rented a horse and got it galloping along the beach. I just dropped the reins, closed my eyes, threw my hands out and let it run. That song HAS to be the mantra of my life...(well, that and 'Redneck Woman' by Gretchen Wilson, but that's another story...) Nice. I'd be scared out of my wits. I'd like to here that "other story" sometime over nachos and beer...

Bella, I just might have to call y'all's bluff on the Hollywood Park girls' day out...
Hanson & Laura, I'm new here, but I think I've seen a 'Tabatha' posting recently - y'all just need to get her a** on over here! And while you're at it, find Warhorse...

Toehold4: Sorry I didn't respond earlier, but I did watch the races - thanks SO MUCH for the 'heads up'. What an amazing finish to the Travers between Grasshopper and Street Sense! And may I say that I love, love, love Calvin Borel! I fell hard for him in the Derby, and I was so happy to see he'd be SS's jockey today. I feel that he can do for horse racing what Tiger Woods (Okay - and Happy Gilmore) did for golf - Cal's such a colorful character! He was just babbling on and on after the win - he had his lead rider in stitches! I loved it when he patted Street Sense and said something like "Let's go get our picture taken!" That sweetie has a face that only a mother could love, and I'm a mother... I also love the Louisiana connection between Calvin and Robby Albarado ('spoiler jockey of Curlin in the TC series, and loser on Grasshopper today). Thanks again, Toehold, for a great tip...this is a good day!

I love horses, and I lived out in the country so we had many "farm" animals. I wanted a horse really bad that I would get on a bull we had, and would ride him around. Thank God the bull ws gentle or I could have gotten hurt while on him. I was about five or six when we had this bull, and I named him Pinto. I finally convinced my grandfather to get a horse for me when I was about 10 or so, but we didn't keep her for long because she bucked off my then five year old cousin. She was a quarter horse, and she was only a year and a half. I begged to keep her because she was still young, and she bucked my cousin off because she got spooked, but Grandpa said no dice. My mom and stepdad were going to buy me a six month old thoroughbred colt for my Christmas present this past year. The colt's mother had died because she was bitten by a snake, and the owner didn't have the time to bottle feed the colt. I told my parents that unfortunately, I couldn't get to the stable where he was kept everyday, and he would be better off with someone that could dedicate that much time to him. I got a chihuahua puppy instead which is one of my fave dog breeds, and in my lifetime, I've had four of them. My niece Alyssa is getting into horses, and she has two Tennessee Walkers. She will start with riding lessons soon, and she is so excited about that. She is trying to learn everything she can about different horse breeds. Hopefully I can get a horse because I still want one. It can be a quarter horse, thoroughbred or an Azteca, and I also want a miniture horse because they are so adorable.

Mellie, that was a great story...sorry nothing ever worked out for you.
It's funny that you mentioned a bull - my friends growing up had a HUGE Brahman bull named 'Junior'. We'd cuddle up to him when he was lying down, we'd ride him, and literally crawl all over him. The dang bull probably weighed 'bout a ton, had a nose 'near as big as our heads, and could have killed us in an instant, but he was sweet as sugar. Your story brought back good memories...
You mentioned snakebites - those same friends had 2 horses who were bitten by rattlesnakes. One died and one was disfigured 'cause half her face rotted. It was so sad.
I really hope you get your horse someday - tell me what an Azteca is, that one's new to me...

Lori, it's funny that you used to ride a bull too, and Pinto was also a Brahman bull. I loved Pinto's big soulful eyes, and I named him Pinto because Pinto is a breed of horse. I fell in love with Aztecas when I saw charros riding them at an event in South Texas. I had to ask what kind of horse they were riding, and I was told they were Aztecas. I was like cool, so is this a breed linked to the Aztecs because my great grandmother was Aztec?! The lady I was talking to said no that it was Mexico's national breed, and the breed came into existence in 1972. I asked what kind of breeds were mixed into the horse. She said that it is Andalusian, Quarter Horse and Criollo, but I don't remember what percentage from each breed the Azteca has. Here are two pictures of Azteca horses. Treasure with her baby.

Those are beautful horses, Mellie...
I'm not familiar with the Criollo breed, but I like the combo of QH and Andalusian. I know QH's aren't a 'gaited' breed, but I seem to remember that Andalusians are... were the Aztecas gaited horses?
(For those who don't know, by 'gaited' I mean horses that have natural movements that are different - and more flashy - than the typical horse's walk, trot and canter...)

Lori, I didn't know what the Criollo breed was either, but they are the Latin American version of the Mustang. They were first brought to the Americas with the Spaniards four centuries ago. The horses were left free in their new habitat, so the Criollo is a product of adaptation to the environment and natural selection.
The Aztecas have a smooth natural gait like the Andalusians, and are used for dressage and all other equestrian events. They are also very good as a cutting horse because they can basically stop on a dime. It is said that the Azteca is a very intelligent horse that once taught to do something, it doesn't forget how to do it.
