Yes it awesome. But it's really no big thing, lots of people usually cherish their roots, don't you think??? Let me throw out a question. Do we say things that ordinary people do everyday is more awesome when Apolo does it??? Like claming his Japanese heritage. People do that eveyday, so what's make him doing so special Is it because we like Apolo so much Feel free to answer! Yes it's true lots of people cherish their roots and i think that's great too. I was just throwing it out there that i was glad Apolo did, It's not a huge deal. But to me the things that Apolo does r extra special cuz he's got a special place in my heart and i really look up to him a lot. GO APOLO!! ;D

I love that he used his Japanese in that article. Very interesting. I also love that he cherishes his Japanese roots. I think that's awesome. I, too, enjoyed him referencing Japanese words. Although I don't call my grandmother Obachan, that is the term the family uses to describe her mother (my great-grandmother). It has always been said with such respect (she has passed on). Respect and honor are some of the most important parts in Japanese culture. That's why I think Apolo is so humble and so respectful of everyone in his sport. Apolo is the epitome of sportsman - always gracious, always complimentary to his teammates and opponents. And he has always upheld his honor.

Lindsey, I didn't know you were Japanese. Is your family from Japan or Okinawa And yes, it is great to celebrate your roots, no matter how far you can trace them back. That's why I hope that Toby Dawson finds his parents, or at least some info about them, he is adopted and all he know is that he is Korean, or that his family is Korean. But all he can really claim is his American heritage. And the fact that racially, he is Asian. But that is as far as he can go...well besides the fact that he can say he is Korean. But he knows nothing of his Korean family and don't know if they are from North or South Korea

Lindsey, I didn't know you were Japanese. Is your family from Japan or Okinawa My grandmother grew up in Tokyo, Japan but married an American during the Korean War. It's a great love story. Finals are almost over, but I couldn't help coming onto the board. Now, though --- I need some sleep. Sayonara!

Are any of you guys Asian? Because I am my family is from Vietnam I can speak 2 language English, Vietnamese, and taking high school Spanish. I know what it means to have so much honor and respect for one ones culture. It's hard to have to go to school in a different culture and at home its a different one, and having people respect that is hard. Everyone at school know me as Chinese and I'm I don't like being stereotyped.

And as far as what roots he will cling to, Apolo makes the choice to say that he is Japanese American, or that he is Asian. He could also very well say that he is biracial, or a multiracial American. But he chooses not too. What you say you are is a state of mind, as well as the manifested reality. It like Halle Berry, says she's black, even though she is biracial. And as an Black American, I get what she's saying, and even though we know she's biracial, in common conversation and identity, this is what she chooses to identify with. It is others, who try to give an identity to a person, and get super-interested in people's background and culture. To Apolo, being Japanese probably is no big deal, it's the fans that make a big deal about it.

And AAO, there are a lot of people here in Chicago from Vietnam. Since your family is from there, does any of them still speak a little French??? Like from the old days??? I know the younger people don't speak French at all!

You tell that to the next person who calls you Chinese or any other Asian group that you aren't! As far as the French history of Vietnam, yeah a lot people don't about that.

Yes it is. The more you know, the more you can find out. Especially if it's something that people are surprised that you know, like a language that is not common for you to know. In my case, me being AA and knowing Italian and able to recognize Polish and Portugese. People find that quite interesting that I would even know to do that
