Yes, Apolo used to be fluent in Japanese when he was younger, but not so much anymore because he doesn't speak it as often.
But he is close to his Japanese roots and considers himself Japanese American, even though he is half-white as well.

I love that he used his Japanese in that article. Very interesting. I also love that he cherishes his Japanese roots. I think that's awesome.

Yes it awesome. But it's really no big thing, lots of people usually cherish their roots, don't you think??? Let me throw out a question. Do we say things that ordinary people do everyday is more awesome when Apolo does it??? Like claming his Japanese heritage. People do that eveyday, so what's make him doing so special Is it because we like Apolo so much Feel free to answer!

oh yes, definitely. there are tons of other athletes and celebrities that do all kind of great charity work.
i mean, come on, the guy is fricken hot, but it's pretty silly when we swoon over his every move.
"oh my gawd! he brushes his teeth!! so do i! that's amazing, that he's able to keep it real despite his fame and fortune! he's a regular guy just like the rest of us!!"
ha ha ha! okay, guess i'm being a bit fecicious, but you all know what i mean, right?!

btw, i think the dinner is sold out. he was going to have a "private/intimate" dinner with about 30 people, but due to the overwhelming response, they added on a pre-dinner gathering for another 200 people. tickets to that may have already been sold out as well.
poo!!

Well and there's also this...which way would he go, anyhow? I mean he does NOT know his mother and in his book, he says he DOES not want to, so who else's roots is he going to cling to? His father's, of course.
Yes, I think a lot of Apolo. He is a unique individual and he's accomplished so much for someone of his age. But....
I have many friends who are from other countries. They came to this one, most of them, with their divorced mothers, to start a new life in this country where there were more opportunities for their mothers to raise them as single mom's. These people speak FLUENTLY, I might add, in their native countries tongue, to their parents everyday, as well as they are fluent in English. I find that to be a lot more impressive, myself. Apolo just said a few words in Japanese. That's nice that he still knows some words of it ( I hear he used to be more fluent but lost a lot of it due to not keeping up with it more ). I can relate....
I am half Mexican, but was raised by my white mother because my parents were divorced when I was 6. I used to speak Spanish much more fluently as a kid because I was around it more and used it more. Then, in high school and college, I took French. It's true, when you don't use a language much, it's very easy to lose it.
But enough about me, getting back to Apolo...it's nice he is so into his Asian backround. But no, I don't think he's like "super unique" beacause he's clinging to those roots. As I said before, since he chooses not to find out his other one's, there is no other way for him to go.

I think that because we are all fans of Apolo's everything he does is great. He is getting in touch with his Japanese roots-awesome. He likes kittys-awwww, how sweet. He likes R&B music-very cool. I mean is there anything that the guy has done that everyone (his fans) have not been supportive of? (Besides maybe dating Allison Baver...oops did I say that out loud? : Just a thought, everything that he has done (ST, charity work, etc.) or that he has interest in seems to be backed by his fans. Side note-the Allison comment was not meant to spark a debate or to offend, it just seems that his choice in girlfriend is the one thing that he has done that is widely disputed amongst his fans.
