QUOTE POSTED FROM MUSICALMOM: " The Americans defeated Canada in the 5,000-metre relay to cement the gold medal. The Canadians led the race with one lap to go when Apolo Anton Ohno of the U.S., made a spectacular pass to move from third to first. " You know this is how Apolo probably looked on that final, winning lap during the relay in China! (thank you wildfire and lily for your representative relay shots from World's in SLC until some actual ones from China surface):

Affecting change: I have already called the local NBC affiliate in Dallas/Ft. Worth and told them to do a freaking blurb about Short Track and Jordan Malone. Calling the newspapers tomorrow. There is life beyond Fball, Bskbl, & Bball.

Way to go Skaters Waltz; I bet that's how Apolo looked when he powered from 3rd to 1st in the men's relay. From fast to supersonic in an instant. What an amazing racer he is, power, stamina, strategy, and heart! not to mention persistence, determination, and grit. Wow. MM

Aw, come on! We got more than just a red skate! I see most of a leg, and a shoulder! But let's face it, if it wasn't for the red skate, we would all have a pretty hard time noticing it was Apolo! ...and I missed it the first glance. Scrolled all the way down the photos and thought " We were robbed, where's Apolo?" Then scrolled back up and saw the red skate. Ok, Susie, ya got us. That was funny.

Hi Everyone! Sorry I'm late to the *party* but I was here in spirit anyway! I just got home yesterday afternoon from my other *party* and now I'm at Mammoth Mountain... to help another grandson (the Special Olympian) with his skiing. I had been trying to check on the status of *our* World Team while I was at the other party, but I couldn't watch any live webcasts, etc. I had read that the USA was in second place... so you can imagine my total shock and absolute joy when I read that the USA had accomplished the great feat of ending up in first place. Belated congratulations TEAM USA! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Finally, some photos! ;D These are from a Chinese website. As with all Asian websites, make sure that your anti-virus is fully updated before paying a visit. There are some opening ceremony photos and some shots of our men's team during the Bracket 1 relay. The finishing order was: Korea, the U.S., Italy, and Japan. blog.sina.com.cn/s/blog_3d31854001008vs6.html

Thank you, susie! Good find!
Wow, there's like 20 people in the stands for the Opening Ceremony. I'm sure more people were probably there over the weekend. So glad to see there are pictures and it wasn't just all a figment of our imagination!

Another little bit of press from this site: www.boston.com/sports/other_sports/olympics/articles/2008/03/18/issues_still_fouling_the_air/?page=3Short and sweet Huge double for the US males at the world short-track speedskating championships. Apolo Anton Ohno, who had skipped most of the World Cup circuit, won the title on the Koreans' home ice despite being disqualified in the opening race. Then Ohno and his countrymen went to China and won their first team title there. The Chinese women, as expected, claimed the individual (Wang Meng) and team crowns. Katherine Reutter, the most promising American-born women's skater in years, was seventh overall and medaled in the 3,000 . . . As expected, the Germans, Dutch, and Canadians dominated the season-ending world single-distance speedskating championships in Nagano. The only US victory came from Shani Davis, who retained his 1,000-meter crown but finished third in the 1,500 . . . By dethroning German countrywoman Andrea Henkel, Magdalena Neuner became the youngest overall World Cup biathlon champion. "Somehow, I've always been two steps ahead," said Neuner, who turned 21 last month. Winning his fifth men's title at 34 was relative greybeard Ole Einar Bjoerndalen of Norway. Fine finish, meanwhile, by rising US star Tim Burke, who was seventh in the pursuit and eighth in the mass start at last weekend's finale in Oslo, ending the season with five top 15 placements.

Lands o'goshen... you had to do some digging to find that little blurb! Seriously, I would have thought Apolo's more public appearances this past year would have generated more articles for speed skating. He certainly gained more individual fans... whether the sport as a whole was promoted might still be doubtful. Sigh. Thanks to all for digging up pictures and articles! I suspect the shortage of photos from Chinese fans might be due to economic reasons. The percentage of households with computers in the home is significantly less than in the States. Plus, those of you locating photos are digging through foreign languages. I don't know how you do it!

Here's a montage news video from CCTV1 in China. Most of the video focuses on Meng Wang (although you can see some of our women racing -- that's Kimberly Derrick with helmet #771 at the starting line) but from 1:01 on, it's Apolo's spectacular inside pass to win the relay (and the event) for our men's team! v.youku.com/v_show/id_XMjEyMTQzMDQ=_rss.html ETA: Korean fan Starangel posted the link to her Harbin photos on OZ. There's a really cute photo of Apolo on the plane (...from China to Korea?! What's with that?) minihp.cyworld.com/pims/main/pims_main.asp?tid=48105001&urlstr=main
