CBC TV COVERAGE OF WORLD CUP - QUEBEC CITY.....
As promised, here is my summary & transcription of yesterday's Canadian TV coverage of World Cup Quebec where Apolo made his reappearance prior to Salt Lake City. My TV. was downstairs & my computer upstairs so I had to transcribe long hand after many pauses & rewinds..can't compare to AAOSMTS19's wonderful play by play live, but I've selected excerpts from the 1 hr broadcast to share with you all. I must say Apolo talks as fast as he skates and in spurts! It takes a moment for the ear to process his rapid fire phrases, but I did get his interview word for word.
The bulk of the program was primarily coverage of pre-lims & finals of both mens & womens races with Canadian competitors. There was a cool interview with the Hamelin brothers that I will transcribe (when I have a few more free moments) for Ruff and the other Canadian GA fans. I must say that the camera work on this broadcast was excellent with lots of close-ups of the Monette & Hamelin brothers & Kalyna Roberge both at rest and in racing mode. A very good looking group I must say ;D
Just before the start of the men's relay, the commentator interviewed Apolo. He was in his blue skin suit with a red bandanna and was his usual unassuming, eloquent, charming self. This interviewer ( Steve) was obviously quite impressed with him.... here goes...
COMMENTATOR: WITH ME NOW IS THE MAN THAT SURPRISED SO MANY WITH HIS VICTORY IN DANCING WITH THE STARS, APOLO ANTON OHNO.
APOLO, WAS IT TOUGHER TO WIN OLYMPIC GOLD OR DANCING WITH THE STARS?
APOLO: They're both two totally different animals in their own right.
Obviously, anyone who has ever been involved in sport knows that trying to win an Olympic medal or make an Olympic team is probably one of the hardest things one can do. But both were hard. I was out there doing some things I was uncomfortable with, so it was a challenge.
(showed clips of Apolo & Julianne dancing...pink dress, green dress)
COMMENTATOR: YOU MAKE IT LOOK VERY EASY. WHERE DID YOU LEARN TO DANCE?
APOLO: You know, I did NOT know how to dance before I went on the show. That was my biggest fear, you know, going out there.....I didn't want to dance at my HS graduation let alone going out there in front of 20 million people, so it was a big challenge for me.
Luckily, I had a great partner and a rigorous, I guess, training schedule.(sheepish chuckle)
COMMENTATOR:SINCE TURIN, YOU'VE TAKEN SOME TIME OFF FROM SHORT TRACK. HERE IN QUEBEC CITY, IS THIS THE BEGINNING OF THE MARCH TO 2010?
APOLO: I hope so. You know, I was able to take some perspective & step back and realize what I want to do with my life. Do I want to pursue short track speed skating? Do I want to go for a 3rd Olympic games...and uh...
I had never really taken a break before, so I used that time to really distance myself from the sport and just gain some perspective on the sport itself, on myself as an athlete and on my future. Came to the conclusion that my heart still lies within the sport, win, lose or draw. I still....I'm in love with short track!
COMMENTATOR: ANY DOUBTS THAT YOU CAN GET BACK TO THE TOP?
APOLO: I have complete confidence in myself that I can be right where I need to be...uh..and thats why I'm still competing. I don't think I would be if I didn't.
COMMENTATOR: SEE YOU IN VANCOUVER!
APOLO: See you in Vancouver !
(all through the interview they showed clips of Apolo skating in previous events)
break to coverage of the men's relay.......
COMMENTATOR: And Apolo Anton Ohno, arguably the best skater in the sport, will be in action with the U.S. in this men's 5000 meter relay.
The Koreans ,who have won 4 short track World Cup relays, will be tough to beat......
(after introducing the Korean team by name)...then the U.S. will counter with Apolo Anton Ohno. We have always said that if the U.S. could find skaters to skate with Ohno, they would be very tough because AAO is quite a force!
They think they've found a couple of good skaters in Jeff Simon, Charles Leveille and Jordan Malone.....(showed Koreans lining up)...the Koreans have so much depth and are so difficult....
There's Jordan Malone #180..he could be the answer for AAO. He's got a ton of speed but Ohno is just unbelievable! especially in the relays where he can make so many of his patented moves.
The Canadian Team is made up of two teams of brothers, the Hamelins & the Monettes.
Three silvers so far in World Cup circuit for the Canadians.
Here we go, 45 laps, the mens 5000 relay! The ice is crowded with 16 male skaters...the Koreans are the favorites.
Twenty years ago, short track previewed at the Olympic Games as a demonstration sport and look where it's come.
Canada has been a force for the last 20 years.
(showed first few laps...went to commercial and came back & showed 1 minute of the last laps...the following comments made during & after end of race)
FEMALE COMMENTATOR- Katrina LeDoan: But as Apolo mentioned, he has the moves on the dance floor but also on the ice. The U.S. is really pushing the Canadians..this is new to have the Americans to battle with.
MALE COMMENTATOR: Nobody is going to catch the Koreans.
Ohno has made his move, he's gotten the U.S. into second place with Canada third. But the Koreans, defending World and Olympic Champions are still unbeaten in the men's World Cup Relay.
FEMALE COMMENTATOR: Steve, you mentioned that the Americans need to have a stronger team to help Ohno....I think they have found members of that team to be so competitive with the Koreans but also with the Canadians who have always been a strength in the relay.
MALE COMMENTATOR:The Koreans are a strong team..so much strength & speed, so much depth.
But the Americans are really coming up showing that they are going to be a force to be reckoned with over the next two years!
