Thanks, Musicalmom...It's too bad that there's such a demarcation between the broadcasting rights, tiven the fact that the countries are next door neighbors, same language, etc. If its any consolation, I plan to watch WCSN for the Worlds in Korea and type in the play-by-play and results. I know its not the same. When I did it last weekend I was really unaware of the multi-national GA members paying attention. But having seen the Canadian and Brit chit-chat I will make sure to pay better attention and hopefully will type faster to include more commentary![/quote] Wow, that's very generous of you. Thanks, Your typing is fine. Must be hard to watch, listen and type at same time. You are indeed a multi-tasker. I'm relieved to know you'll be doing that again for the Korean worlds, because I don't think we'll be able to get that coverage either. I plan to write to the Canadian Speed Skating Assoc. and ask why not! I'm actually an American living in Canada and usually the demarcation is non-existent. Wonder if it has to do with rights sold for the 2010 Olympics. I know this channel advertises that it will have Olympic Coverage. I know there will also be local tv coverage from here. Just seems a little soon ( 2 years) for that to be in effect. I must add to all GA women who post and travel to events, that I have been terribly impressed with the classiness of short track fans who cheer for everyone regardless of country and honor the competitors as the amazing athletes and competitors that they are. Goes a long way to overcome the bias of the TV coverage of previous Olympics ( both Canadian and U.S.). Broadcasters were too much into their own country's athletes rather than covering whoever had an exceptional performance. Sometimes, the Nationalism went a little too far for my taste. As Apolo says, it's not about winning, it's about the journey! (and the race!) He didn't win the 1500 but it was a h-- of a race to 3rd. I just love to watch him skate...period. What power, what grace, what concentration, what passion...but then you know all this Musical Mom

For those of you in Canada or able to pick up CBC TV broadcasts, I just noticed that The World Cup from Quebec will be broadcast on CBC tomorrow Sat. at noon Pacific Time. Not sure about other areas. Check your TV listings. . Ackkk, the only thing playing for most of the day on CBS on the Reno station is paid programming. Apparently we all can't wait to buy a veg-o-matic. ...Oh 'Drano', you have failed me again....

Dear Mtnme; Its on CBC ( Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) not CBS, that's why. I understand your disappointment...who needs another vegimatic! By the way, I always enjoy your posts! Musical Mom

Just thought of another question I had during the race... does anyone know how helmet numbers work?At the Nationals, I think Apolo had a different number ... Does it change by race? ( ie. 500, 1000,1500 etc.) Does it change by event? ( ie. Nationals, each World cup?) Does each team member wear a certain number like in football? Are they just assigned randomly? Like a previous poster, I generally id Apolo by his red skates since I'm not always sure what number he is wearing. Didn't see anything about this in the USSpeed Skating Guide Book. Musical Mom

I loved the article on Kimo and Jan. I knew they were good friends but I didn't know the story of how that friendship began.

Musical Mom Hi Musicalmom, Those are all very good questions. The helmet numbers change by event and the skaters will have that number all through that competition. Horrors!, if they changed numbers every race, it would REALLY be confusing- and believe me, it can be confusing enough! Skaters like Apolo and Charles Hamlin are easy to pick out of the crowd, their bodies having a certain 'look' to them. Ryan Levielle and Jordan Malone on the other hand, were near impossible to tell apart on the ice. They have a very similar build, height, weight and facial structure. It wasn't until they were at our end of the rink and I could see their faces that I knew who I was looking at. (That is, until I finally memorized the helmet numbers of who's who.) I too wonder why they aren't asigned a number permanently - or even have their last names on the back of their skinsuits. Maybe because they're going too fast to read 'em anyway! As to how the numbers are chosen, I don't have the answer for that one. And thanks for the kinds words. Back at ya, it's nice to have another Canadian on the forum and hear your input on events. You're neck of the woods must be all abuzz right now with all the Olympic preperations. As for CBS, I had a feeling it was Canadian TV, but I still rushed to check out the listings to see if I would get lucky. ...I can dream can't I? But hey, no such luck. We'll have to rely on you and Lexi to tell us how it was. (and it seems to me there is one more Canadian on the boards here, but I confess, I can't remember the name. So sorry. Waving anyway- )

After much studying....and being numerically confused too..here's what my group noticed
Numbers are assigned alphabetically
for instance Jordan Malone was 268 at WC6 the next alpabetical American male was Ohno at 269
note the numerical spread between A. Baver & K. Reutter
but check it out--we could be wrong!

I know this question has been asked before but I don't think I have seen the answer here. What World Cup event is happening in October this year in SLC? What are the dates? I am tempted to go but need more information. Thanks!

I could have SWORN a couple days ago, it said SLC under the World Cup 1 in October, and now it's gone and the WC1 appears to be 'up for bid'. Perhaps USS felt they could generate more revenue by having it elsewhere. Is it just me, or do you all get the impression they don't WANT the fans to know where the competitions are going to be ?!!! In other words, all bets are off now as to where either the National competition or the World Cup will be. Save your pennies, so you can get on a plane no matter where they decide to have it. ____________________________________________________ Competition and Events Consideration List Please review the following list and indicate the line next to the event your organization would be interested in hosting Short Track 2008-2009September American Cup I (World Cup Qualifier)______________ October 24-26 World Cup (International Event) ______________ November American Cup II ______________ December US Junior Championships (World Juniors Qualifier) Bay City, MI December US Championships (US World Team/World Cup Qualifier) ______________ January American Cup III ______________ March National Championships/ American Cup Finals______________ March North American Championships ______________

I was able to find an article online describing that Kimo and Jan bought a dinner with Apolo thru an e-bay auction. Here are some pictures of them....for the full article (which is really a fabulous article, go here.... www.imua69.com/guesswho/index2.htmYou are amazing at research aaosmts19! Thanks so much! I clicked on a couple more links, too, from that site. This page was cute, too: www.imua69.com/guesswho/index3.htmKimo sounds really funny, and it looks like Yuki has become good friends with them, too. It's great to have such solid, good people as your ardent supporters! ;D

They hold 2 WC's in Asia (one week apart), 2 in Europe (1 week apart), then 2 in North America (one week apart). I don't know if it's always in that order, but we heard that one of the 1st WCs fell through somehow and that they were going to hold it in SLC. Mtnme's new info suggests that the SLC location isn't set in stone, but it's probably safe to say that the USA IS going to host one of the first two World Cups, someWHERE, on Oct 24-26... We had also heard that Nationals (US Senior Championships) were going to be in (or near) St Louis just before Christmas, but St Louis isn't definitively listed either... Didn't I read somewhere that AmCup I is going to be in Milwaukee? (AmCup I is the qualifier for the first few World Cups).

The volunteers that worked WC6, were signing up to work WC1 in Oct. 2008 in SLC on Saturday when we were there. I'm not sure that means for certain WC1 will be there, but it does sound like they are planning in anticipation of the event. Many of the skaters were sharing that info with their fan base at WC6 as well.

A personel at the Oval explained to me (on Sunday) that two other cities declined (for various reasons) this WC and the Oval was the 3rd location to be asked to hold it in SLC. That's the word I got... hope it happens!

As of WC6, it sounded pretty firm that WC1 would be in SLC. And I KNOW I didn't dream this, SLC WAS listed under WC1. A few days later, it's gone- so possibly the other two venues reconsidered when they saw the turnout, or possibly another player has entered the scenario. Notice you have to 'bid' on these events. As I'm sure it costs some serious bucks to put on one of these, not to mention the logistics of rounding up hotel rooms etc, for all the various athletes and their coaches. If the expense would appear to overrun the benefits, who would want to host one of these? The most recent WC, the oval was turning away people as they were sold out. If it appears this sport is experiencing a 'growing spurt', a venue/location that can hold more people and therefor make the endeavor more profitable might reconsider. Just a thought....
