www.examiner.com/x-22008-Olympics-Examiner~y2009m11d8-Comeback-kid--young-USA-short-track-skater-vying-for-Vancouver-Olympics-goldComeback kid - young USA short track skater vying for Vancouver Olympics gold Amidst a wild pack of world-class daredevil skaters who were scheming for a victory, a young club skater zipped around this pile-up to win the 500 meter race at the USA Short Track Olympic Team Trials in September. With this triumph over Apolo Ohno and others, the underdog Simon Cho, surprisingly earned a coveted spot on the USA Olympics Short Track Skating Team that will skate at the Vancouver Olympics. Although nervous at first about this all-or-nothing event, Cho said, “It wasn’t until the races started, that I knew I was capable of competing. I gained more and more confidence with each (qualifying) race.” And now this 17-year-old phenom just finished sixth (Pool B: 2nd place) against the world’s best at the ISU Short Track World Cup in Montreal this weekend. Simply incredible for a skater who was questioning his skating future. “My performances last season were mediocre, and I lost funding from the USA national governing body,” Cho stated. But after regrouping at home this spring, he returned to the sport with renewed focus and determination. He participated on a Salt Lake City club team this summer, while other elite skaters trained with the USA National Team. So, when it came time for the stressful Olympic Trials, he competed under the radar. “What really helped me out was not having any pressure put on me, because I was not on the National Team,” said Cho. As the youngest athlete on this five-member Olympics squad, he now travels the world – seeking to earn enough qualifying points to compete in the individual 500 meter race, his specialty, in Vancouver. And his recent finish in Montreal, just a few spots behind team members Ohno (second), and Jeff Simon (third), leaves little doubt about his abilities and will. “To be able to come back from behind is a great accomplishment for me,” said the retrospective Cho, who hopes to land on the Vancouver Olympics podium for not only the 500 race, but also the team relay.

sports.espn.go.com/oly/news/story?id=4632801 Reutter wins 1,500; Ohno 2nd in 500MONTREAL -- Katherine Reutter of the United States won the women's 1,500 meters at the short track speedskating World Cup event on Saturday, and U.S. star Apolo Anton Ohno took second in the men's 500. Charles Hamelin of Canada held off Ohno to win the 500 in 41.576 seconds. Ohno finished in 41.807 and fellow American Jeff Simon was third in 41.870. Earlier, Hamelin won the 1,500, finishing in 2 minutes, 19.220 to edge Si-Bak Sung of South Korea by 0.001 of a second. Travis Jayner of the United States placed third in 2:19.560. "I think the message is starting to be sent that the Canadians are really strong on pretty much all the distances," said Hamelin, the world-record holder in the 1,000 and a member of Canada's silver-medal winning 5,000 relay team at the Turin Games. Ohno failed to qualify for the 1,500 final after placing fourth in his semifinal heat. Only the top two skaters advance. Reutter finished in 2:23.275 seconds to beat Ha-Ri Cho of South Korea. Cho crossed in 2:23.349 and Liu Qiuhong of China was third in 2:23.371. Wang Meng of China won the women's 500 ahead of Kalyna Roberge of Canada. Zhao Nannan of China was third. The skaters are working to secure spots in Olympic competition this February in Vancouver. The results from this week will be combined with rankings next weekend in Marquette, Mich. I am a rabid Apolo fan...on and off the ice. But I remember before Bejing how he disappeared from the media. He went into his own private place and gave everything he had. I too question if all the "distractions" are hurting his skating. That being said, I will not judge. I have never given so much to anything as he has given to skating. I have never been as driven. I wish him the very best and hope they are holding back in some way. I hope it all changes during the Olympics. And I anxiously await what comes after skating for Apolo...hope he does go into entertainment.

speedskating.teamusa.org/news/article/28890US Speedskating November 07, 2009 Four short track World Cup medals in QuebecIt was a gold-medal day for three-time U.S. Short Track Champion Katherine Reutter (Champaign, IL) as she topped the podium in the Ladies 1500m. Skating against the current 1500m World Cup leader, Eun-Byul Lee (KOR), Reutter demonstrated great strategy and endurance during the 13-lap race and finished with a time of 2:23.275. This is Reutter's second gold medal of the 2009-2010 World Cup season. "I was up against the top Korean skater and some of the fastest skaters from China, but I was able to get in front and sprint to the finish with two laps to go," Reutter said. "I can see that my hard work on speed training and time patterns is paying off." Kimberly Derrick, 2006 Olympian, skated in the 1500m B final but was disqualified for impeding and Olympian Allison Baver (Sinking Spring, PA) also skated the Ladies 1500m but was disqualified for impeding in her semifinal. The U.S. men brought their game to the 1500m with Travis Jayner (Midland, MI) battling to a third place finish, earning him his first individual World Cup medal. "I worked hard in the race," said Jayner, celebrating his podium finish. "I'll keep trying as hard as I can to continue to get ready for Vancouver." Olympic gold-medalist Apolo Anton Ohno (Seattle, WA) finished fourth in his semifinal heat, landing in the 1500m B final, which he went on to win against skaters from Italy and China. Jeff Simon (Las Vegas, NV) fought it out in his semifinal but was disqualified, along with Canada's Olivier Jean, and did not advance. Fast skating brought two U.S. men to the podium following the Men's 500m A Final. Ohno and Simon faced off against two Canadians, Charles Hamelin and Francois-Louis Tremblay, in the fast 4.5-lap race. Once the dust settled, Ohno was in second place followed by Simon in third, with Hamelin winning the event. Simon Cho (Laurel, MD) skated the 500m B Final and finished in second place. In the Ladies 500m, Reutter was the only U.S. skater that made it through to the quarterfinals where she finished first in her heat. Facing some tough competition in her semifinal, including the current 500m World Record Holder Meng Wang (China), Reutter finished in third place, ending in the B Final, which she won, finishing sixth overall for the 500m. Racing concludes on Sunday with the Ladies' and Men's 1000m and Relay competitions.
