Apolo #1 and JR #2...way to go!!! ;D ;D
This has put the US Men at 30 points, only 4 points behind Canada.
Let's see if our guys can pull off a #1 in the relay.

After that 3000M, it looks like the ladies are into the A Final! ;D Canada could still overtake us for 1st place if we crash and burn in the relay, but even if that were to happen, Italy and the Netherlands mathematically could not take 2nd place from us.

Ladies came in 3rd in the relay with Canada 1st. Team points have US and Canada tied with 37 each. Way to go Team USA ;D ;D Canada gets 1st place, 'cause the relay is the tie-breaker, but good job, ladies! You live to fight another day, so Git-'er-Done tomorrow! Based on the scores that Number1Fan posted, the men are in a similar position as the ladies - the max Japan can get in the relay is 10 points, and the minimum we can get is 2... so unless, like, we were DQ'd or something (0 points - God forbid!), we can't get knocked out of one of those top 2 slots...

From usspeedskating.org
U.S. short track speedskating ladies' and men's teams advance to A finals.
The first day of the short track speedskating at the 2009 ISU World Team Championships saw Team USA advance to the A finals, but it was a battle to get there. Placed in Bracket 1, the ladies' team faced a tough Chinese team, so they throttled down in the 3000m and relay to save energy for the repecharge. Also in the first bracket, the fight for the men's team came down to the relay where they finished just behind the Korean team.
"(Apolo) Ohno banged into the lead but was passed and the U.S. narrowly lost," said Jack Mortell, team leader." J.R. (Celski) is keeping the men's team in play with his brilliance in the 1000m and 3000m. (There was) also an impressive win for (Travis) Jayner in his 1000m and Ohno in the 500m."
The ladies faced Italy, Canada, and the Netherlands in the repercharge. Finishing in a tie with the Canadian team with 37 points, they advance to the A final in tomorrow's races. The Netherlands and Italy fell back to the B final.
"Great skating by all the ladies, but highlights were wins in the 1000m by Katherine Reutter and Lana Gehring," Mortell said. "Wins in the 500m by Reutter and Jessica Smith, and a gutsy win by Reutter in the 3000m guaranteed the U.S. a trip to the A final."
Japan, Canada and Italy proved tough competitors for the U.S. men's team who are defending their 2008 World Team Championship title. Following the 500m and the 1000m, a surprisingly strong Japanese team came close to knocking the U.S. men out of the A final.
"A convincing 3000m win by Apolo, followed by a come-from-behind second place in the same race for J.R. Celski cemented a trip to the A final," Mortell said, "and an opportunity to defend their title of Best World's Men's Short Track team on Sunday."
Team USA consists of Ohno (Seattle, WA), Celski (Federal Way, WA), Jayner (Midland, MI), and Jordan Malone (Denton, TX). The ladies are Reutter (Champaign, IL), Gehring (Glenview, IL), Smith (Melvindale, MI), Kimberly Derrick (Memphis, TN), and Alyson Dudek (Hales Corners, WI).
"Coach Larry Daignault is impressed that the U.S. men are getting this done being short a skater with (Jeff) Simon out with a broken hand," Mortell said. "Four skaters are handling the workload that is spread among five skaters on every other team."
Racing concludes on Sunday, March 15 with winners decided by total points in the 500m, 1000m, 3000m and relay events.
