I probably can't make this because of a lack of funds My parents booked their summer vacation...as the family for Vegas this June and that's cleaning us out completely. I really want to see Apolo skate, but I doubt I'll have money for September. With textbooks and tuition payments, I have to resolve with myself that I won't ever see Apolo skate. But that's why this forum is awesome because it makes me feel like I'm there.

Dagnabbit! I just realized I won't get to see JR skate after all. He's eligible for the Olympic team because he was in the top 3 at Worlds. A very unhappy Apolo , I hear, WILL be skating at Marquette. His loss, our gain ;D.

Sounds like the US is doing what the Canadians did. Whoever places at Worlds secures a spot on the Olympic team. I'm sure that's a load off of JR's (and Charles Hamelin's) minds.

I just re-read the USOC Athlete Selection Process (that was issued in Jan 08) that defines the selection process for the Olympic ST Team. There isn't anything in there that awards a slot on the team to someone finishing in the top 3 of the previous Worlds. There is "medal contender" section which allows someone who finished in the Worlds top 3 to be entitled to a "skate off" for a position on the Olympic team if there has been a certified medical condition that prevents him/her from participating in the Olympic Trials. Has this document been superceded by another one? Sk8er??

For those of you in the know. I have a question. So we send 5 men to the Olympics? Is it a possibility that J.R. gets to compete in all four events and Apolo and the rest only there for the relay? What determines who gets to do what? How many can we send to do all four events? Somebody please end my nightmare!

What determines who gets to do what? How many can we send to do all four events? Somebody please end my nightmare! So we send 5 (5 is the most, I think? That way we have enough people for relays, in case someone - God forbid - gets injured or something) - I think the most we can have as individual skaters is 3 ( just like Torino We actually only had 2 in each distance, my bad - Apolo, Rusty, Anthony, and Izy). They would race the 500, 1000, and 1500. Everyone else would be there for relays. Oh and yes, it is a possibility that JR could skate everything and the rest of the skaters just pick up the relay. That would follow under the wonderful saying of ' That's Short Track!' and that would also mean that we could only send 1 individual skater to Vancouver (but I shall not think about this cause that's just - wow. LOL). Olympic Trials will determine who gets to skate which distance (if any besides the relay). Where a skater places overall in an event will determine whether or not they get to skate that distance (you're basically looking at top 2, maybe 3). Then at the end of the races, it's the top 5 who would get a berth for the Oly team (depending on coaches and all that stuff, but that's usually how it goes) and that's usually the relay team. However, the last two World Cups of next season determine how many skaters we get to send to Vancouver. It may be 1, or 2, or 3 (so trying to not to jinx anything here). Basically I was only taking about the men here. The women have the same opportunity as well, but in Torino we only had 2 individual skaters - Halie and Allison, and Kimberly. However, the women have definitely stepped up their game this season, so you can't count anyone out. **I think I caught everything, but I probably didn't explain it as in depth as stfan would have liked, so you guys can add to this. :]

I think this goes along with the ST regs - like Apolo when he placed 1st at last year's Worlds, he was given a bye for the World Cup Team and didn't have to race at AM Cup 1. If USS is keeping this reg, then JR would be given a bye onto the 09-10 World Cup Team for his 2nd place win at this year's Worlds. I guess by receiving that bye for the World Cup Team - JR gets a bye for the Oly team. However, I got a question now: if he gets that bye, then what distances is he skating?

That's a good question. I was just talking with folks who have been skating a long time and they were saying JR won't need to skate at Trials. But you know, the Regs seem to change so often that you almost need to be a Cat I skater to keep track of them! And if everyone isn't skating at Trials how would you know who is skating each distance? Oh boy! I feel better! Maybe JR will be in Marquette after all SusanG

Apolo had to qualify at trials for Torino (I'm pretty sure) and he placed second at Worlds. Of course, that was three years ago.

Thank you so much BBB for the detailed explanation. I'm going to be a nervous wreck in September. I'm so stressed out already. It would be so much easier if I didn't care about the outcome of the trials.

Anybody know anything, and if she'll ever skate again? she was injured at the oly trials if i'm not mistaken (similar to allison) and that hindered her results in torino. but then i thought she took off time to finish school cause she was almost done with hs. but from what i remember she graduated and then it was like - poof! - she was gone. i don't know where she's at now. she hasn't raced since worlds in 06, if i remember correctly.
