ca.news.yahoo.com/s/capress/081130/sports/sktg_speed_short_wcup_1Canadian Olivier Jean wins gold at World Cup short track speed skating eventSun Nov 30, 12:43 PM
By The Canadian Press
BEIJING - Canadian Olivier Jean won a gold medal in the 500 metres at a World Cup short track speedskating event on Sunday.
Charles Hamelin of Ste-Julie, Que., added a bronze in the 1000 metres and the two Canadians were part of the relay squad that added a silver.
Jean, from Lachenaie, Que., started first and managed to make good use of his speed and energy throughout the race, accelerating in each lap to cruise to the finish line in 41.482 seconds.
Koreans Sung Si-Bak and Sui Bao Ku won silver and bronze.
"It feels good to get the gold, to be back on top of the podium after my injury last year," Jean said. "I've been waiting for this gold medal since the first World Cup, but it didn't come. I'm not focusing so much on results now, but I did it.
"It shows that all the hard work and efforts I've been putting in were worth it, and I will just continue doing what I'm doing now, I'm on the right track. It was a great reward to stand up there."
Michael Gilday of Yellowknife and Richard Shoebridge of Cambridge, Ont., took ninth and 11th places respectively. Gilday was disqualified in the semifinal and Shoebridge finished third in his quarter-final heat.
In the 1000m, both Hamelin and Tremblay made their way to the final along with Koreans Lee Ho-Suk and Kwak Yoon-Gy.
Lee took the gold, Kwak the silver, with Hamelin third and Tremblay fourth.
"It was a really close race," Hamelin said. "I was first for the first six laps, but with two laps to go, a Korean tried to pass me and our blades touched. I had a bit of trouble in the corners after that and I lost some speed, as my blade lost its adjustment.
"With only one lap in the race, the Korean managed to pass me and then in the last corner the other Korean and I were fighting for position, and I fell just before the finish line."
The men's relay team - Hamelin, his brother Francois Hamelin, Jean and Gilday - then went on to win the silver medal, just behind the Americans.
"It was a good relay, the Koreans fell and were out of the way, but with a few laps to go, we had two bad exchanges and the Americans passed us, then the Chinese," Hamelin said. "I was the last skater, so I had to prepare a pass, which worked on the Chinese skater, but it was too late for the Americans."
On the women's side, China's Wang Meng took gold in the 1000m 1:30.028, with compatriot Zhou Yang second and South Korea's Shin Sae-bom third.
Kalyna Roberge of St-Etienne-de-Lauzon, Que., came in sixth in the 1000m after placing second in the B final.
Quebec's Anne Maltais and Jessica Hewitt of Kamloops, B.C. were eliminated in the quarter-finals for 11th and 16th place finishes respectively.
In the 500m, China's Liu Qiuhong, Fu Tian Yu and Zhao Nannan won gold, silver and bronze respectively.
Edmonton's Jessica Gregg was disqualified in the semifinal to finish eighth, while Valerie Lambert of Sherbrooke, Que., was ninth.
Annik Plamondon of Longueuil, Que., was not able to successfully come out of the repechage and was 22nd.
The women's relay team of Gregg, Hewitt, Maltais and Lambert had a little bit of bad luck. With three laps to go, Gregg fell, Hewitt went on to continue, but they did not make the relay properly and failed to complete the race, finishing fourth behind China, Korea and Italy.
The Canadians earned a total of six medals on the weekend stop - two gold, three silver and one bronze.

World champion Wang Meng of China won her favorite 500 meters race with a new world record here on Saturday while skaters from South Korea showed their supremacy on the short-track ice with two golds in a speed skating event of the ISU World Cup.
Skating to a thunderous crowd in the Beijing Capital Gymnasium, Wang, the Turin Olympic gold medalist, got off to a fast start and clinched the gold medal in 42.609 seconds, chopping 0.516 seconds off her world mark set at the season's opener in Salt Lake City.
"As I started in the first line, it was normal for me to take the lead. In the race, I just skated to the pace as the coach required me but not considered too much about the speed and record," said the 24-year-old Wang, who swept the 500, 1000 and 1500 meters at the world championships last spring.
"Since 2005, I have never lost in my pet event. In these days, my training level was good and steady, so my efforts deserved the result. I hope I could skate better in the following stops." she added.
Wang's compatriot Liu Qiuhong grabbed the silver in 43.042 and Tatiana Borodulina of Australia beat host skater Fu Tianyu in 43.595 to wrap up the bronze.

The same story happened on the women's side. Sung's compatriot Jung Eun-Ju took the advantaged starting position and cooperated well with her two teammates to touch the line first in 2 minutes 25.001 seconds.
China's promising skater Zhou Yang, who won the event in the season's previous stops in Salt Lake City and Vancouver, tried to break the Korean's block with desperate race at the outer track and cheered the home crowds with a strong comeback to grab the silver in 2:25.280.
American Allison Baver wrapped up the bronze in 2:26.670 due to the Korean Shin Sae-Bom's illegal cross track.

Canadian short-track speedskaters claimed three medals Saturday at the Beijing World Cup, the third stop of the 2008-09 World Cup circuit.
Charles Hamelin of Ste-Julie, Que., and Francois Tremblay of Montreal won gold and silver medals, respectively, in the men's 500 metres, while Oliver Jean of Lachenaie, Que., added a silver medal in the 1,500 metres.
Tremblay led most of the race before Hamelin was able to overtake him.
"He was up front for four laps," said Hamelin of Tremblay. "It was a fast race, but I was able to pass him near the finish to take the gold.
"Francois-Louis and I really dominated throughout the day, going into the final, we knew the gold medal would be for one of us."
Tremblay agreed.
"Sure, it would have been nice to get the gold, but it's not the colour of the medal that matters, but the quality of our skating," he said. "Charles and I, today, we dominated, we were quite ahead in the final, and it was really fast times, so I'm definitely satisfied."
The bronze medal went to Wang Hong Yang of China.
Jean, who had a breakthrough season in 2006-07 but missed all of last season due to injuries, finishes five one-undredths of a second behind gold medallist Sung Si-Bak of South Korea.
"I'm extremely happy with my silver medal," Jean said. "I had a great race, I was leading for the last six laps in front of three Koreans, I was going quite fast so they were not able to pass me. I made a small mistake in the end and was passed at the finish, but I'm still satisfied.
"The 1,500 metres is my favourite distance, I really want to win one. I was nervous for the first two World Cups of the season, and I focused too much on results, and things didn't go all that well. Here, I really focused on skating well, so I was a lot more relaxed today on the ice, and it worked well."
Michael Gilday of Yellowknife, N.W.T., finished sixth. Rookie Richard Shoebridge of Cambridge, Ont., skated in the B final and finished 11th place overall.
No Canadian women advanced to 500-metre final on Saturday. Jessica Gregg of Edmonton was disqualified in her heat and finished 16th, while Valerie Lambert of Sherbrooke, Que., fell and finished 15th and Anne Maltais of Quebec City missed advancing 0.07 seconds and finished 11th.
