news.xinhuanet.com/english/2008-11/29/content_10430871.htmChina's Wang shatters world record, South Koreans in dominant form at World Cup short-track www.chinaview.cn 2008-11-29 19:01:53 Print BEIJING, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- World champion Wang Meng of China won her favorite 500 meters race with a new world record here on Saturday while skaters from South Korea showed their supremacy on the short-track ice with two golds in a speed skating event of the ISU World Cup. Skating to a thunderous crowd in the Beijing Capital Gymnasium, Wang, the Turin Olympic gold medalist, got off to a fast start and clinched the gold medal in 42.609 seconds, chopping 0.516 seconds off her world mark set at the season's opener in Salt Lake City. "As I started in the first line, it was normal for me to take the lead. In the race, I just skated to the pace as the coach required me but not considered too much about the speed and record," said the 24-year-old Wang, who swept the 500, 1000 and 1500 meters at the world championships last spring. "Since 2005, I have never lost in my pet event. In these days, my training level was good and steady, so my efforts deserved the result. I hope I could skate better in the following stops." she added. Wang's compatriot Liu Qiuhong grabbed the silver in 43.042 and Tatiana Borodulina of Australia beat host skater Fu Tianyu in 43.595 to wrap up the bronze. The later 1500-meter race became the South Korean's solo show. In men's contest, Sung Si-Bak edged past Canadian Olivier Jean by .005 seconds to take the gold with a time of 2 minutes, 27.075 seconds in the final, which was taken right down to the wire. Jean, who had led the race midway but was outpaced by Sung at the finish line, should feel satisfied as two more South Koreans were close behind at third and fourth. China's Sui Baoku finally finished fifth. The same story happened on the women's side. Sung's compatriot Jung Eun-Ju took the advantaged starting position and cooperated well with her two teammates to touch the line first in 2 minutes 25.001 seconds. China's promising skater Zhou Yang, who won the event in the season's previous stops in Salt Lake City and Vancouver, tried to break the Korean's block with desperate race at the outer track and cheered the home crowds with a strong comeback to grab the silver in 2:25.280. American Allison Baver wrapped up the bronze in 2:26.670 due to the Korean Shin Sae-Bom's illegal cross track. Another gold of the day came in men's 500 meters. Canadian skater Charles Hamelin, who has just won the 1,000 meters in the Canada stop days ago, posted an impressive 41.118 seconds victory,0.155 seconds ahead of his compatriot Francois-Louis Tremblay, the silver winner of the event in the Canada stop. China's Wang Hongyang finished third in a time of 42.176. The season's third stop of the six-leg World Cup series raised its curtain in the Capital Gymnasium on Friday. It attracted 179 skaters from 28 countries and regions, featuring five men and five women's events.

Flou and Charles Hamelin racing in the 500#1 final: From what I can see, the lion's share of the Chinese media's attention is going (and rightly so) to Wang Meng's new World Record in the 500, and the Chinese women's 1-2-4 finish in the 500#1. The Chinese media is keeping an eye on Apolo's progress, and they've also developed an interest in Jeff Simon (whom they call "Simon".) One writer mentions that he thinks Jeff will be a worthy successor to Apolo one day.
