after a missed appointment and a rescheduled one, my 77 y.o. mom will be under going hip replacement surgery tomorrow AM.
she's suppose to be in the hospital for 2-4 days then a possible short stay at a convalescent home until she can function more independently.
there's 5 of us that will be juggling our schedules around to assist her in any way needed.
so if you guys can...please keep her in your thoughts and prayers...thanks

Lots of good thoughts being sent your way, number1fan.
My dad had a replacement this past winter and came thru it fine. The first day after is the most painful as they will want her up and sitting on the side of the bed.
Don't be surprised if they prescribe 30 days in a rehab once she gets there....its a standard Medicaid 'prescription" of 30 days convalescence after a hip replacement. At 30 days they re-evaluate. My advice to you is to have her stay as long as she can: it will be easier on all of you and your siblings, plus give her the benefit of PT, OT and alot of attention.
Try to find a rehab that comes recommended by someone you know or has a relative that's been in your prospective rehab. In my experience, the case worker asked us for 3 recommendations and they tried to accommodate one of the 3. Consider the amount of hip replacement rehab that they do, how happy does the place seem, the PT/OT facilities; if she has a pet dog, can someone from the family bring the dog into visit? Does she have other special needs and how will they be attended to? Don't be afraid to go to the rehab and get a walk-thru before selecting one.
Good luck and I'll be thinking of her....and your family!

number1... I'm so sorry to read that your mom will have hip-replacement surgery (I just read this!), but I'll pray for her... and hopefully she'll have a quick and fast recovery. I can totally relate to this b/c my mother recently broke her hip. Plus, somehow I've gotten a case of hip bursitis currently (maybe sitting too much at the 'puter!) and am getting physical therapy for it. So, my very best wishes go to your mom and all you care-givers!

All good thoughts coming your way. Your family here at GA will be waiting for the good news of a speedy recovery from surgery.
I've heard that PT after a hip replacement is a long and slow process but she'll be better than new when it's finally over.
Tell her the next time I'm at the sushi bar I'll be thinking of her and wishing her well.

lily, evie, butterfly and wags...
i spoke with the anesthesiologist today because i wanted to make sure i knew what meds my mom could and couldn't take in the AM...he assured me that she'll be surprised how much better she will feel on the second day.
my mom ate like a horse tonight...we got her home, and she's all tucked in now, hopefully off to a good night's sleep.
thank you all...it's very comforting to know that i have my ga family for the much needed moral support too!
