Small Plane Explodes, Then Crashes in Southern N.J. Killing 4
by Jack Ryan
May 31, 2006
A small plane crashed in a wooded area off of Mill Creek road in the Manahawkin sector of Stafford Township in Ocean County New Jersey on Wednesday, killing four people, authorities said.
Police say reports of noise and plane debris indicate the plane may have exploded in mid-air before falling to the ground in the woods of South Jersey.
The accident happened at 11:00 this morning.
Wreckage of the airplane, a 1979 single-engine Piper Cherokee Dakota, was found off Route 72 east of the Garden State Parkway, according to police Capt. Charles Schweigart. The four occupants were found dead, he said.
tPC has learned that the occupants were 2 men and 2 women. We are also hearing that weather might have been a factor. Meteorologists indicate the cloud ceiling was low and fog was prevalent in the area.
tPC has also learned that in order to be flying in these conditions, the pilot should have been instrument rated. It is unknown at this time if that was the case.
The plane was registered to Aviron Aviation LLC, in North Plainfield, according to Jim Peters, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration, reports the AP.
Police do not believe anyone on the ground was injured.
Crews are combing the woods in the area for other pieces of the plane. Officials are urging drivers to stay away from the scene of the crash.
