Lilyover70.. Don't you just love that stretch of 395 between Bishop and Tahoe? SO Scenic. Maybe it's because I have so many fond memories from when I was a kid of that area (Grew up in LA, lots of camping trips in that area.) On the few occasions I have to drive to LA, I almost look forward to that section. ( and ya gotta stop at Walker Burger". You should enjoy this. My sister and I were driving down to bishop when we saw this at the scenic overlook at mono lake: Apparently someone decided they needed a much more comfortable chair on the turnout to watch the sunsets... ;D Mtnme, this photo is fantastic, first for the scenery and then to scroll down to the chair! All we need is to sit Apolo in it! Kidding aside, yeah, that stretch of 395 is so scenic and I love it even more in the winter, with a blanket of white! I've taken many photos of Mono Lake in the past... no chair tho! We always stop at Topaz Lodge and have lunch in the restaurant, overlooking Topaz Lake... fantastic view and relaxing too, in any weather. Our fav section is driving through Walker river canyon, even though it doesn't look the same since the big avalanche. You mentioned Walker Burger... is that in Walker? We'll look for it on our next drive up to Tahoe, hopefully in December or January. We've never stopped in Walker, just zoom on through to get to Topaz Lodge. You do appreciate good scenery... we were in British Columbia, Alaska and Western Washington for a month recently. The Alcan Highway from British Columbia into Alaska is remote (in places) that you could drive for several minutes without encountering another car or RV. Any member(s) here from Alaska??? One of these days, I'll get around to posting photos here. Do I have to upload it to a site such as Photobucket first???

As you might have guessed, number1fan, I was in one of those war relocation centers; I was still in grammar school then. We were not in *Manzanar* but have stopped at the monument a few times, while traveling the Eastern Sierras on Hwy 395. My husband wants to stop there more often but I tell him that I don't wish to relive the past every time we drive by. Incidentally, my family was in camp, way up in the most northeastern county (Modoc) of California.

I've made several daytrips (yeah, DAYtrips) on Hwy 395 from Los Angeles to Mammoth for snowboarding with my sons and their friends. (I'll give ya' one guess who was driving and who was sleeping...) I've always wanted to stop at Manzanar, but I'm always passing it before dawn or after dark. It's known as a stirring reminder of the 'witch-hunts' in world history. Happyfeet, it seems that carrot cake is a favorite among recent 'Meet the Members' contributors - I like earth tones too, especially for things that are difficult to change (paint, flooring, trim, countertops, appliances), but I also love sunset colors - particularly the colors in the sky exactly 1/2 hour after sunset! ...And it seems that we both met our husbands under 'unique' circumstances!

I'm so jealous of all you Californians. Not only because that State is one of THE most beautiful and you get to live there, but because you'll all have opportunities to meet up with one another. Then you'll form a clique, forget all about me, ignoring me on here. I can be a lot of fun. We Canadians are the life of the party. We don't know how to do anything else but eat, drink, be merry and drink some more. I think it would be worth keeping me around, if only for your amusement! Just sayin'.

Are you an interior designer/decorator? I do love rich, chocolate browns. We are fixing uup a little chalet style house in the Poconos and everything is wood... the ceiling, the floors. I had my husband paint the walls and trim cream and bought a big brown cordoroy sectional. My idea of color are the big heriz rugs (I love them !) that define the spaces. But so far that's the only color. Gotta get some pillows and something on the walls!!! Happyfeet, yes I'm an Interior Designer (call me a decorator and "thems fightin' words!" ) The Poconos! How fun! I've never actually been there but the pictures always look wonderful. I've taken 2 trips to New England and want to go again, but never got near the Poconos. And I know what you mean about all that paneling. The old cabins here have a ton of it. To some it makes the room "cozy", but if you live in it year round, it just makes the room dark and feel small and closed in. I'll bet painting the walls made a HUGE difference in brightening the place up a bit. (And I love corduroy sofas, especially the wide wale. Plush but not fussy.) The Poconos are great, but veerrrry slllloooowww compared to what we are used to. My husband grew up in Manhatten and Queens, NY. I'm from Trenton, NJ. My husband moved to Colorado when he was 18 to go to school and decided to stay. When I moved out to CO to be with him, I thought I found heaven!! Unfortunately, one of us had to be serious about a career, (I had closed my practice as a lawyer to move across country to be with him) so when a great career opportunity came up for him, we moved back east to the Philadelphia area. After living in the foothills of the Rockies for so long and becoming an avid skier, my husband missed the "mountains" and convinced me to look for a little place in the Poconos. (I fear he will be disappointed once sky season starts...the Camelback just isn't Aspen. ) I, myself being a Jersey girl, longed for a place at the jersey shore, but our bank account came up short...way short. Luckily, we did find a little fixer-upper with no paneling, but every wall in the house had peeling, 40 year old wall paper. Unfortunately, the 1/2 inch thick, dark scratchy paneling was in my pseudo-tudor colonial in suburben NJ, and when we removed it, we found no wallboard! I have remodeling stories that will make your hair stand up! And I totally get the interior designer/decorator thing! LOL My husband worked for an interior design company during the construction boom in Denver in the early -mid- 90's. I should have known better! LOL

Hi, Lori! yes, we did meet our husbands under rather "unique' circumstances. Sometimes when I look at him or my little girls, I think about how close I came to not having them in my life and I wonder where I would be and what I would be doing. I don't mean to be "deep" here, but seriously, I was not a techie by any means, and I was not into the internet at all, let alone chatrooms. Through a series of "coincidences" resulting from my then-recent breakup with another guy, I landed in a Colorado-themed chatroom and met my techie husband my first night online. When we first got together we were very hesitant to tell ppl how we met because it sounded so crazy, but as time has passed and now that the internet is part of everyone's life, it doesn't seem so strange. In fact, strangely enough, I have a 2 first cousins who met their spouses online and my hair stylist met her fiance on match.com.
____________________________________________________ Hey Lily, Walker Burger is in Walker, but it's only worthwhile in the summer. They have a "secret garden" in back that is really nice to just relax and eat after such a long drive. To post photos you do have to upload them to photo bucket, than copy the img link and past it in your post I spent a summer working in Alaska, incredible experience and I wasn't even in the scenic part. We have been chatting about starting a photo link- where are you from? where have you been? I just need to go take some pics... ___________________________________________________] Number one fan, you have some great pics of the sierra. I know what you mean about the drive in the winter. Drove up on a full moon once. It was like the whole valley was lit up with stadium lights. eerily beautiful
____________________________________________________
Lori, girl next door I feel your pain on the day trips to mammoth. My brother still does it on occasion when the skiing sucks at Big Bear. Brutal drive back after you're exhausted from skiing. (I only drive as far as "Mahogony Ridge" after a day of skiing! ____________________________________________________ Happyfeet, ... isn't slowing down the whole idea of haveing a vacation home? I know what you mean though. When I first moved from LA to Tahoe, it was definately a lifestyle change. Now I have gotten so used to it, that going to the city is something I can only do for a limited time. (I'm the one on the freeway going "We're gonna die, we're gonna die!!!...and I used to dart and weave with the best of them!) As someone once told me, "Once you move to Mayberry, it's really hard to move back to a big city!" And thanks for the heads up on the decorator thing! (We all get a little "snarkey" about that term! haha)

Ah Lexi, I was just thinkin' today about if we all DID decide to meet up, how we could get you out here. We'll just have to pass around a collection plate, hold a bake sale or something! ( I was thinking SLC in february might be do-able for me if Apolo would in fact be skating. But since you're more into "Eat, Drink & be Merry...I think a trip to NAPA might be in order...)
...and as you can see I still can't seem to grasp the concept of the multiple post...but we're working on it!
Modify: Okay, did I get everyone???

Thanks mtnme! Yes, the northshore is beautiful; our daughter and family spent their timeshare week at Squaw Valley Olympic Village in July. And we've all skied at all of the above ski areas, as well as Incline. We used to go to Alpine Meadows quite a bit... love the view of the lake from the top of the slopes there. But, in recent years, we've been going to South Tahoe because it's closer for us to get there, up highway 395 and over Kingsbury hwy, from Southern California. I grew up in Stockton, CA, so I always loved our trips to Lake Tahoe! Lilyover70.. Don't you just love that stretch of 395 between Bishop and Tahoe? SO Scenic. Thanks for confirming question about Photobucket,.... a photo link would be fun! I have a ton (or two) of photos of all our travels. My problem is that I have so many, it'll be a major project, just to locate a specific photo!

We have been from British Columbia to Nova Scotia on the Via Rail, also traveling by auto. We've been to Vancouver five times, hope to make it six, in 2010... love that city! I met a Canadian Moody Blues fan online (we belong to a large *list*) and we've been corresponding for several years. We were able to meet in person when she and her husband came down to Palm Springs (from Kelowna) for a tennis tournament. Yep, you Canadians are a lot of fun!!!

Ah Lexi, I was just thinkin' today about if we all DID decide to meet up, how we could get you out here. We'll just have to pass around a collection plate, hold a bake sale or something! What I'm counting on is meeting so many of you folks in Vancouver in 2010. We'll get to show off our Canadian hospitality at the same time! And, Mtnme, we'll have to have another tutorial. I commend you on your attempt to multi quote. The psychedelic blue is a very nice touch. Lexi, I think Canada has some of the most beautiful scenery... so where are you in Canada? Hi Lily - I'm in Nova Scotia on the east coast. I couldn't possibly be any farther away from you guys in California. How interesting you've been here before. Hope you enjoyed it. And, yes, I hope you and your husband are planning to be in Vancouver in 2010. Before we know it, we'll all be talking about how it's only 2 years away!

Lexi, we drove up to and around Nova Scotia, staying in Sydney. The entire Cabot Trail drive was absolutely beautiful! But, in order to spend more time in that area, we had to forego seeing Halifax. We did go to Saint John, New Brunswick to see the *reversing falls* and the Bay of Fundy. So, you see, your area has some of the best scenery too, even tho everyone thinks California is great (which it is). "The grass is greener on the other side", eh?!!! Onward to Vancouver/2010!!!
