Title - Apolo & Julianne - What Happened Next?
Author - Britchick1980
Rating - PG
Disclaimer - This story is a complete and utter figment of my imagination. I have never met either Apolo Anton Ohno or Julianne Hough and the occurances in this story have been completely fabricated.
Note - Please note that this is my first attempt at writing fiction so please be kind! Any constructive critisism is most welcome because it is the only way in which I will be able to develop my writing skills. Also, please remember that I am British and therefore there will be some disparity in spelling etc.
Dedication - This story is dedicated to the wonderful people at Apolianne. I have been reading your wonderful stories over the past few weeks and believe that I could learn a lot from simply being in your company (my account at Apolianne is still pending approval!).
What Happened Next?
"The winner of the gold medal, representing the United States of America, Apolo Anton Ohno".
I closed my eyes briefly before walking towards the podium. My knees were shaking with every step I took and the loud thudding of my heart droned out the roar of the crowds chanting my name. "Savour every second Apolo", I told myself "savour every second". This was to be my last Olympics. This was to be my last short track speed skating gold. This was to be my last competition. This was my last chance to savour the feeling of victory. I was retiring, affect immediately.
As the first bars of “The Star Spangle Banner” rang out around the Pacific Coliseum memories from throughout the years flashed before my eyes. Winning gold in the World Junior Championships in Montreal in 1999, winning gold in the World Chamionships in Jeonju in 2001, the 1000m Olympic gold medal I won in Salt Lake City in 2002, my first! The golds at the World Championships in Beijing in 2005, the 500m Olympic gold in Turin in 2007! Not to mention the gold medals at the World Championships in Korea (2008), Austria (2009) and Bulgaria earlier in the year. All of which took me to this very day in February 2010, the day upon which I was to win my last gold medal in Vancouver, Canada.
As the familiar anthem faded away I stepped down from the podium to the thunderous applause of the crowd and the lightening flashbulbs of the worlds press I felt the joy of victory course through my veins like opium. It was however tinged with sadness as I thought of the world that I was to leave behind. My world, the skating world. I had to blink back the tears as I headed towards the press box. Pull yourself together man, you’ve just won the gold, they are gonna think that you are insane if you walk in their blubbing like a baby. Poker face, poker face, poker face.
As I stepped into the press room I was greeted with the usual congratulations & celebratory calls from the press that they reserved for Olympic Champions. As I sat down and made myself comfortable I was introduced to the throng of people by the interview moderator and questions were called for, all hell broke loose as each reporter fought to have their questions answered.
"Quiet please" the moderator bellowed "One question to Mr Ohno at a time! You, in the back row with the red jumper, you’re first, what is you question to Mr Ohno?".
The first question came from a short, stocky guy I recognized from one of my local newspapers back home in Seattle.
"Apolo, how do you feel to have won two gold medals at these Olympics, taking your total Olympic gold medal tally to four?”
I thought for a second before answering “When I won my first Olympic gold in 2002 I believe my comment was ‘They can just throw me in the desert and bury me. I got a gold medal. I'm good now’. Well seriously gentlemen, I mean it this time... dry land beckons for me. I’m done! Whilst I am incredibly proud of what I have achieved, and am deeply grateful to all those people who helped me achieve my goals, I feel the time is right to move on. New goals, a new direction.”
The next dozen or so questions were along the same vein as that first! My achievements and what my future plans were? Was I happy with my gold tally? How would I like to be remembered in the world of short track speed skating? Would I miss the adrenalin pumping competition? Was I planning a move into the training side of speed skating? Was I planning an assault on the Hollywood scene?”
If this last question had caught me off balance, then the next one would have flung me from my chair "is there any truth in the rumour that the ABC show ‘Dancing with the Stars’ is to be axed after a grand finale series which will see you reunited with your old partner from series 4, Julianne Hough for a final champion of champions showdown?".
I rubbed my chin in irritation, poker face Apolo, use the poker face … “Dancing with the Stars is folding?” I inquired delicately. “I didn’t know that”.
“So there is no truth in the rumours that you headlining the grand finale along with Julianne Hough?” the reporter repeated his question.
“No, there is no truth” I stated through gritted teeth. “No truth, what so ever” I lied thinking about the “availability enquiry” letter sitting on my coffee table a home. I never want to see that woman again. Never!
