This one is a bit scattered, and I haven't re-read it to find any errors. Sorry about that. Hopefully you all enjoy it.
Kaci walked into the house feeling tired, yet refreshed. She turned on the shower washed all her worries and anxieties away. Nothing could spoil her great mood, well except maybe her fall out of the shower when she slipped on the non-existent suds of soap. Kaci walked out into the kitchen and found Adriana pouring soy milk into her Trix cereal.
“Want some?” Adri asked with a mouthful of cereal.
“No thanks Adri, I would prefer not to eat that junk the day before a date.” Kaci laughed looking at her best friend with milk dripping down her chin.
“Fine, do what you want. But you’re missing out on a quality meal. Anyway, Kaci, it’s not like your gonna gain any weight from this stuff. You’re the only person I know who can eat literarily anything she wants and still stay skinnier than a twig!”
“Oh, I am not that scrawny. I am nice and toned thank you very much.” Kaci giggled and poured herself some orange juice.
“Whatever you say. Are you taking the car today?”
“No, I think I’ll let you take it today. I’m going to walk to work. It’s only two miles and if I leave now I’ll make it with fifteen minutes to spare. My shift has been changed to seven o’clock in the morning today instead of at night.”
“Are you coming home then?”
“No, I was thinking of getting my nails done. Maybe catch a movie to inspire me.”
“If you aren’t coming home, how are you going to do your make up and hair? Or change?” Adriana raised her eyebrows.
“There’s a locker room. And I want to see how many more calories I can burn before my big date.” Kaci grabbed an apple and a blueberry muffin from the counter. “But now I have to go. So I will see you much later.”
“If you see me. Never know you might end up at his place.” Adri snickered.
“As if. What type of girl do you take me for? Don’t worry; I’ll be home tonight. And I’ll be nice and in order.” With that Kaci was out the door and headed for the entrance of the building.
Kaci stepped onto the city street and took a deep breathe of crisp air in. She walked at a brisk pace to work and couldn’t help but feel bouncy. It had been a while since she had been on a date with a nice looking guy. Sure there had been all those losers that she had one date and ran away, but those weren’t proper relationships. Those were made up of pervs who only wanted to bang her and push overs. Kaci wanted a real man who could hold her interest and fascinate her. She sincerely hoped that this guy would be exactly that, a real gentleman who wasn’t a baby. Looking toward the sky, Kaci prayed that this one would be that guy she had been begging for all her life.
Kaci pushed open the doors of the staff room and put her duffle bag in her locker. She inspected herself in the mirror and decided that make up was not necessary for work that day. It was always pretty slow in the morning and it wasn’t her shift time yet. She had lied when she told Adri that her shift time had changed. Kaci knew that if her roommate knew the reason she had come so early was because she wanted to read she’d only laugh. Kaci loved reading and aspired to write a great novel someday. Since middle school when she joined the school newspaper and wrote the book of the month section, Kaci knew writing was what she wanted to do. It was something she had a knack for and an everlasting interest in.
Walking into the used books section Kaci decided to make herself useful and sort through the new stash. Sticking price tags on all the ones in decent condition and putting the tattered ones in a box, she found an interesting title. This book she found seemed to fit her life and her future. The title of the book was A Journey. Only the blue hardcover remained and the book was virtually nonexistent. She opened the book and started to read. From the start she knew this was a book she would not put down the rest of the day.
Sitting at front desk Kaci continued to read. Now the guy in this book, he seemed real and honest. He was that guy she had been looking for since her dating life. This “Apolo Anton Ohno”, he was genuine. She remembered watching him during the Olympics and thinking how cool it would have been to be him at that moment. She vaguely remembered him being hot. From reading his book, she found more and more good in this boy. He was independent, smart, rebellious, talented, dedicated, and so much more.
After the crowd slowed down, Kaci finished the book and checked her watch. “Holy crud!” She yelled realizing it was seven-thirty. She rushed into the staff room and headed to bathroom. She brushed her teeth first and washed her face next. In her rush she dropped her makeup bag and the content scattered across the floor. Hurriedly, she gathered it all up and carefully applied each product. Looking in the mirror again, Kaci relaxed a little. She felt confident and beautiful. Grabbing her clothes, Kaci rushed into a stall and changed. She had chosen a blue cashmere sweater and some nice jeans. Nothing fancy, just comfortable. This outfit made her feel at home.
Once out of the bathroom, Kaci checked her watch again. It was now eight. She sat and waited. Most boys were always late. She didn’t expect him to be on time. Picking up a magazine Kaci got comfortable on her stool. She waited…and waited…and waited. After ten different magazines, Kaci checked the time again. It was nine o’clock. She secretly knew that this guy was too good to be true. If only that Apolo guy could have been him. If only somebody like that had approached her. Kaci felt a tear escape her eye. She didn’t want to cry, no man was worth crying for. She just couldn’t help herself. All her hopes had been crushed.
Kaci grabbed her stuff and walked out the entrance to the store. It was just perfect that she didn’t have her car with her. Now she’d have to walk all the way home in the dark. She carried the book she had read that day in her hand and thought about it. Her life was a journey. This was just another one of those chapters. Getting stood up by a hottie. Hopefully next time, Kaci wouldn’t fall for a pick up line. She had learned her lesson and wouldn’t let it happen again. Kaci decided to let the tears stream down. They matched the rain drops that began to fall.
Alright. Let me know what you think.
