Yeah I think it's great as well, and yes Shani did get a bad rep and flack from a lot of the media, including NBC, instead of embracing him for making history, they put him up against Chad's arrogant ass! Like he's the d**n poster boy for the "All American Hero!" Bad NBC, Bad

I'm tired of seeing the same threads day after day so I hope no one minds me resurrecting one or two threads from the past. I've always been interested in the friendships Apolo's maintains on the ice and away from it. I really like Shani and so it doesn't surprise me that he and Apolo are best friends. This thread speaks a bit to how their friendship started, but I'm wondering if they've always been as close as they are. I would imagine competing against one another would cause some conflict along the way. And doesn't Shani have a bit of a reputation for not being a team player? I just thought I'd get some dialogue going..... Bella, do you happen to have downloaded anywhere the video you refer to in your first post on page one (copied below)? You say it's one of your favorite interviews with Apolo and now I'm curious about it. Hiya Rose, The following link takes you to the NBC Olympics site and contains lots of short videos on Apolo. If you scroll down to the "Pre-Torino" section you will find one or two videos about Shani and Apolo. One is "Davis, Ohno: Competitive Friends" and the other is "Short trackers to B-Ballers". The second one is one of my fav little interviews with Apolo. The way he talks about playing basketball with Shanni is just priceless! www.nbcolympics.com/athletes/5056883/detail.htmlI hope I added the link right.

That WAS a cute video. My favorite line was when Apolo said that he told Shani that since he (Shani) was about 6 feet tall, he (Apolo) shouldn't be able to beat him at basketball.. and ever since then Shani beat him. The comments Shani made when he was interviewed on DWTS was priceless as well. I thought it was so cute when he said he spit out pop when Apolo told him he was going to be on the show.
Shani competed at the American Cup I this weekend, so they must be getting to see more of each other now that Shani is in short track again.

I just thought I'd get some dialogue going..... Based on their personalities, I would say that they hit it off immediately. I'm sure once they get on the ice they get competitive, but I think the both seem the type to not hold grudges and keep a separation of what happens on the ice and off. As for not being a team player, I'm not sure where that comes from. Oh wait, I do - from USS folks, Chad Hedrick and the NBC media spin. I cry bullshet at all of that. It's true that Shani (and his momma) have issues with certain speedskating organizations, but as for being a "team" player, I don't think I've heard of any ST skaters complaining. It actually seems to be the opposite - Shani seems to have a really good relationship with his fellow short trackers.

The Long-Track World Cup in SLC is this weekend, and here's some news about Shani... deseretnews.com/article/1,5143,695225768,00.html Check out the last line - The Oval will not take the rest of the winter off, though. Apolo Anton-Ohno and the short track skaters will have a world cup event in February.

here's something straight from the aao website...
Wednesday, January 02, 2008 Congratulations to Shani Davis!
Shani Davis' performance at the US Long Track All Around Championships was again spectacular!
According to the SLC Tribune, his "Dominating Performance" this past weekend at the Olympic Oval in Kearns, UT. allowed him to break the American record for the 1000 meter with a run of 1 minute, 9.05.
Davis blew away the field in the men's 5,000 meters, skating 6 minutes and 17.48 seconds to record the best time at the distance by an American this season.
"Davis blew away the field...." At the last day of the event he almost lapped the second skater at the end in the 10,000 meter event! posted by April at 5:37 PM
