PARTY FOR TWO It was two days before Apolo and Thalia's paths crossed once again. Leaving practice for the day, Apolo split off from his teammates to stop by the locker room, but while passing by the windows looking out over a different rink from the upper level stands, he noticed the person on the ice was Thalia. She was zooming around the rink taking moments to jump. Different kinds of spins and he took a minute to try to count rotations. Some of them he was right, other ones he couldn't get his mind and eyes to register. He was amazed at the way she seemed to float above the ice instead of gliding on it, and how she propelled herself up and out and seemed to spin fast as lightning.
Intrigued, Apolo opened one of the doors, walked down to the middle of the stands and took a seat to watch inconspicuously.
"Alright, that was great." Jenna said from the side. "I want to see the routine one more time and then we'll call it a night. The doctor said you need some more physical therapy so don't try anything wise. Nothing over a double."
Thalia took in a deep breath and even from where he was seeing, Apolo could tell that instruction irritated her as she circled the rink to a spot and stood in a pose to wait for the music to start. A bass line started and Jenna said, "Watch your face, Lia. Go with the music."
Thalia seemed to shake off any frustration and let the music take her over. Amy Winehouse's smooth vocals played loud in the stadium. "They try to make me go to rehab. I said no, no, no."
Apolo reclined as he watched her with amusement. She really is as awesome as they say, he thought to himself. Just as he thought everything she did was flawless she attempted a jump and he counted: 1, 2, 3, 4 ... no three and a half. She landed and her ankle bent under her. She plopped onto the ice and Jenna raced over asking if her knee was okay. Did she fall on her knee? Could she move it?
"I'm fine," Thalia said, standing up slowly. "It was just my ankle. It gave out."
"Oh, good." Jenna said before ripping into her. "What did I say about jumps? Nothing over doubles. Who the hell do you think you are going for a triple axel like that. You're not ready."
"I'm never ready according to you and the doctors. I know I'm ready, Jenna. It's been a year."
"Yeah, only one year. Lia, don't be this way. This is all new and I don't want you trying to be Miss Superstar here like at Chula Vista."
Thalia rolled her eyes and threw her hands up in the air. Jenna tuned away and said, "This practice is over today. I can't believe you're acting like you're 15 again. See you in the morning."
"Good night!" Thalia hollered back from across the rink. Jenna exited from the lower level and although a little confused, Apolo decided he'd go try to talk to Thalia anyway.
He stood up and slowly descended the stairs. Coming up the to upper level (which was actually the ground level), Jenna looked through the windows and noticed him walking toward the rink even though Thalia had yet noticed him.
Thalia stopped at the stereo sitting on the wall and changed CDs. Before Apolo could speak up a slow song began playing. It was "Catch Me When I Fall" by Ashlee Simpson and Apolo was taken aback watching her skate a routine that was quite simply ballet on ice. He set his stuff down on the floor and leaned against wall to watch her.
The emotions coming across in her movements combined with what played out on her face, Apolo swore he saw tears in her eyes. She spun with one leg above her head behind her, her hands holding onto the blade of her skate. While spinning, the leg in the air came out to her side forming a "Y" formation with her body. She stopped spinning and skated backward around the rink. As she passed Apolo she caught a glimpse of him and screamed as she tripped on her blade and fell down on her back.
"Oh God,"
Apolo stepped onto the ice and rushed to her as fast as his ADIDAS would take him.
"I'm sorry," he said. "I didn't mean to scare you."
"Yeah," she replied, letting him help her up. "You did scare the crap out of me. Do you always creep around?"
"I wasn't creeping." he replied haughtily. Thalia started laughing and pushed his shoulder saying, "I was joking. But seriously, what were you doing creeping around?"
He chuckled and answered, "I was leaving practice from the other rink. Saw you and wanted to see what you could do. You're not so bad."
"Not so bad, huh? I happen to think I'm pretty fan-freaking-tastic. But I noticed you yesterday. You're ok."
"Just ok?"
"Yeah. Just ok."
"Do you think you could do better?" he asked.
"Well, maybe if I knew how to speed skate then yeah. I think I could do better. Like you could do any better at figure skating? It takes the entire body to do it, not just the lower half."
"You think my arms don't get worked out."
"Well ... they do look a little small compared to your legs."
"Oh, ok, I see."
They paused in silence for a minute and then Apolo said, "So maybe I could teach you some stuff sometime."
"Really?" Thalia responded.
"Yeah. I mean, just the basics."
"That'd be fun. I've always love speed skating, but it's the one thing I never tried to learn."
Sitting in the cafeteria a few minutes later Apolo asked, "So what were you so busy with that you didn't learn speed skating?"
"You really wanna know? People don't believe." she said. He said he did want to know so she spit out the list of extra cirricular activities to him. Thalia and her two brothers had been involved with everything they ever saw on TV. The Suarez children were involved in baseball, dance, choir, gymnastics, swimming, soccer, hockey, acting, music lessons and learned a number of languages through out the years including Spanish, Japanese, Chinese, French, German, Russian and Portguese. She went on to explain further that she played the guitar and piano, danced ballet, tap and Latin dances like the Flamenco, Salsa, Mambo, Samba, Meerengue, Cha-Cha, Pasa Doble and use to sing in a marachi band with her brothers, grandfather and a great uncle.
His jaw was lying somewhere on the floor below the table when she finished and she couldn't help but laugh and blush. She was laughing at herself, embarrassed because she always felt like she was so different from everyone else.
"I know, I'm a dork, right?" she said blushing and burying her face over her cup of steaming hot green tea.
"No, I think that's awesome. I was just getting into trouble and you can't brag about that."
"Yeah, well, I wasn't the greatest child. Just restless and interested in too much."
"I always wanted to learn the guitar." Apolo said.
"Well, go buy one and I'll teach you. I'm learning the harmonica. Sort of took it up when I busted my knee last year. Granddad's orders."
"That's cool."
"So tell me something," she said, leaning on her elbows across the table. He reciprocated the move imitating her serious look until she said, "Did you ever want to touch Julianne's butt 'by accident' on Dancing With the Stars?"
Apolo couldn't help himself and he laughed outloud. A few people took notice, most of the others pretended not to notice.
"Wow," he said. Now he was the one blushing. "I plead the fifth."
"That's a yes."
He shook his head and Thalia looked at her watch. She jumped up and said, "Oh man, I'm late."
"Practice?" he asked.
"No, class."
She grabbed her bag and tea and rushed off. Apolo jumped up after her and called out, "Do you need a ride anywhere?"
"No," she called back over her shoulder. "I do it online most of the time."
"Want to hang out again?"
"Yeah, definitely. Complex C. Come by later, we're having a little party."
"What time?"
"Whenever. I gotta go. Bye."
She ran away across the grounds toward the dorms.
A few hours later, Apolo arrived at C. He had heard the noise of the party for awhile and he figured it was big, but when he turned the corner and saw people gathered everywhere, drinks in hand and conversing, he was quite frankly stunned. He walked around and asked where Thalia's room was and finally found it. He entered the place where the door was left open and he searched around for the hostess.
He found her in a corner with two people, sitting on her piano (a baby grand) and holding a martini glass half full. When she saw him making his way through the crowd she slid off the piano and met him with a hug.
"You made it." she said. "Awesome!"
"Yeah," he replied. "No one else was around because apparently everyone's here."
"I know, it's gotten crazy. But that's good. All the new people meeting all of you old veterans."
She took him by the hand and said, "Let's put your coat down."
"Oh, I brought you something."
"You didn't have to. What is it?"
They opened her bedroom door and she rushed hiim inside because her dogs were inside the room. He handed her a brown paper bag and threw his coat on her bed. She opened it and started laughing when she saw a photo of Apolo crossing a finish line, arms raised in victory above his head. It was a plaque from the 2006 Olympics.
"What is this?" she asked. "I mean, it's nice. But this is yours."
"I figured you needed some art hanging up." he replied.
"You're a bit conceited, aren't you?"
"It's really just been sitting in that bag for over a year."
"You're dumping it on me? Even better. You're smooth, fella."
"Ok, now I jsut feel like an ass."
"Oh shut up. Do you drink?"
"Not often."
"We've got all kinds of stuff out there."
She opened the door and the two rushed out before the two pups could follow them. They fought their way to the kitchen and made themselves drinks. Everyone at the center were on strict diets, but somehow no one seemed much to care now.
"All of these poor souls," Thalia said. "And I'm the poorest one of us all."
"What's that?" asked Apolo. They looked out over the room as she said, "Tomorrow everyone's going to have to work out with hang overs and they'll have to work extra hard because of the alcohol. They're all going to hate me to some degee because I thew the party, but when they're bored. Who are they going to come to for excitement from now on?"
She looked at him and pointed to herself.
"That's why I'm the poorest one of us all." she added. Apolo smiled and took a sip of his drink.
"I'm tired," she replied.
It was only 11PM, but she had had a long day like most everyone else. Politely she pushed everyone out, handing out some of the left over alochol but keeping the good stuff for herself. Because of the offerings, they didn't seem to notice the party hostess was canceling the celebration. When everyone was outside and doing their own thing, Thalia opened her bedroom door to let her babies out and plopped down on her sofa. Apolo took a seat in the chair and Toto wasted no time jumping into his lap.
"Sorry," Thalia said. "He doesn't know a stranger. I'm afraid, he'll never be a guard dog."
Torro tood on her lap, eyeballing Apolo.
"Looks like you've already got one." Apolo said looking back at Torro.
"Yeah, but really he's a big push over when you get to know him. Torro, down."
Torro obeyed his mama by lying down in her lap, but he kept his sights on Apolo, watching for any sudden movements.
Thalia sighed. Her head was lying on the back cushions of the sofa, her long hair sprayed wildly around her like a dark halo and she lazily held the martini glass on Torro's back. As she propped her feet up on the coffee table, Apolo took her in with his eyes. Her toes were painted a natural color, she had a silver ring around the left foot's second toe. Her legs seemed to go on forever and they were super toned. Her stomach disappeared between Torro and the sofa cushions. Her arms were slender stems leading to long, elegant finers with nail painted a deep red. She had a long, slim neck, a strong jawline and her lips looked like two pink pillows lying on a perfectly tan bed. Her eyes were closed but when Apolo's eyes ended on her face she could feel his stare and slowly opened her eyes to look back at him.
He blushed slightly but his natural arrogance kicked in and he asked, "How many men do you have to mase on a daily basis?"
She giggled, "None."
"Oh, they're intimidated. Good thing I'm not."
"You think I'm intimidating?"
"No," Apolo corrected, standing up and looking around her place. "I said other guys are. I'm not."
"I think you're hiding."
He looked down at her and thought for a minute. She was tired. It would be very easy to just sit down and kiss her. There were always secret contests with any of the male population when good looking women were around: Who could be the first? The first to do anything with her. Talk to her, make her laugh, kiss her, and or more. Apolo didn't want to do more with her ... well, he did, but he wasn't about to be the guy who forces it upon a woman. He would make out with her, though.
Then he thought differently. He spotted her guitar next to the piano. A black Johnny Cash-styled acoustic Gibson. Perfectly enough she had framed photos of her favorite musicians above the piano and guitar, one of whom was Johnny Cash.
"Play me something," Apolo said.
"What? Now? No,"
"Are you the intimidated type?"
The dare was too much for either of their egos to ever take. She pushed Torro off of her lap, took the guitar from him. He sat down on the sofa, followed by Toto. Torro was on the opposite end, lying down. She pulled a stool from the tall bistro-style kitchen table over to the living room and sat down.
"What do you wanna hear?" she asked.
"Do you make you own stuff or just play other peoples' stuff?" he asked.
"Both," she answered. "But since I'm tired, you're not hearing my stuff. Choose someone."
"Ok, um...play something Spanish. You are Latin aren't you?"
"Mexican," she corrected. He winked at her and sat back. She thought for a second and then started playing a marachi. She sang the old Mexican song she use to sing with her family as a ten-year-old.
When she was done she looked at him and they looked at each other in silence; he with an almost blank stare on his face, her looking a little embarrassed.
"What?" she finally asked, looking down at her bare feet.
"Nothing," he answered, relaxing back into the seat. "That was awesome."
She stood up and set the guitar down before sitting beside him and saying, "I'm a little drunk, and a little attracted to you. If you tried to kiss me right now, it's a pretty safe bet I'd let you. But here's the thing. I don't like ruining potential friendships with silly lustful emotions. So when I ask you to leave in a few minutes, don't take it the wrong way. I just protect myself. It's my first priority. And making strong friendships is my second priority. Ok?"
Apolo grinned and nodded. She smiled. They grabbed their drinks, sat back in the sofa to just sit in silence.
