Ch.3
“I’ll have Jess show you to your room,” Dave said as we walked out of his office. “You’ll meet me at the Short Track rink after you settle in. Welcome to the Olympic Center, Delia.”
What have I gotten myself into.
“Hey! So you’re staying? Great! You’re going to love it here. I mean sure the job can be kind of a drag. I used be an assistant manager last year, trying to earn some money for school. Now I’m just working the front desk. But it was a lot of work. Basically you play maid to the team…”
Maid?! She’s definitely wrong. I’m gonna hate this. I really need to stop BS-ing and come out with it.
“Well, here we are and here’s your key. I live pretty close to the center, so call me anytime, ok? I’ll see you later!”
I walked into the apartment. It was fully furnished. There was a small kitchen and sitting area with a TV. I walked into the hallway on my right and found the bathroom and bedroom. I threw my bag on bed, where a dark blue polo shirt and matching track pants in a plastic bag laid, along with a box of Nike sneakers.
So this is where I am. Yesterday I was an entertainment editor for a huge selling magazine and now, I’m a beck-and-call girl to a bunch of jocks. If there is a God, he’s probably pissing himself from laughing at me.
I changed my clothes and put my hair up in a ponytail. In New York, my closet was filled of black suits and business clothes. I never really dressed down, unless it was to go to the gym on rare occasions. I walked to the ice rink where Dave told me to meet him. I found him near the benches with a bunch of skaters circled around him. I walked down trying not to put any attention on myself while Dave gave his pep talk. But I had jinxed myself.
“Delia, there you are! Come meet the team!”
I made my way down to the skaters. I looked around at the men and women around me. All of them had the physique of Greek gods. Especially the one with the long, wavy brown hair. I was never one to go crazy over a boy, but those hazel eyes got me good as my stomach did a flip.
“Okay guys, this is Delia, your new assistant manager. Please make her feel at home and BE NICE!” His stern gaze led to three guys including the one with the eyes that made sweat even in the cold arena.
“Why you lookin’ at us? We were nice to Maddy! We even gave her a going away gift,” said the skater with the blond spikey hair as Hot Eyes and his friend snickered behind him.
“Oh Okay! Excuse me. Call it what you want boys, but putting your jock straps in her suitcase is far from what I’d call a present.”
Dave glared at the three of them but they didn’t seem to notice because they were too busy laughing hysterically and wiping their tears away.
“Delia, these three stooges are Rusty, Apolo, and Shani.” They all put out their hands for me to shake. As I grabbed Apolo’s hand, we both felt a spark and immediately pulled our hands back.
“Sorry, my clothes came fresh room the bag, they’re probably staticky.”
“Well Delia, you can just hang around for now while we practice,” said Dave.
“Boys, out on the ice!”
“Well Gents, looks like we got ourselves some fresh meat,” said Apolo as he and his friends skated away.
“She’s pretty cute,” commented Shani as he looked behind him at Delia, who was now sitting in the stands.
“Yeah, I think I might want this one to stick around,” added Rusty.
Apolo looked over to the new A.M and smiled. “You boys might be right. This one might be fun to play around with.”
***************
I sat in the stands watching the male skaters fall in line. I noticed the three guys Dave introduced me to, kept looking in my direction. They would look back and smile and say things to each other.
Why do they keep looking at me?
I wasn’t used to attention from guys. Dating and guys were never a main priority for me. He smiled in her direction before he took his place in line.
Apolo? Odd name…why does it sound so familiar?
Dave’s shot gun went off and the men began to race around the rink. I had never seen anything like it before. I watched Apolo get in front of the rest of the pack and made it across the finish line. This speed skating thing was so alien to me even though Steve had mentioned something about it before.
“The one person I wanna get and everyone in this town wants, doesn't give up the goods to any big time magazine or newspaper.”
That’s when it all clicked.
Apolo Ohno! That’s who Steve’s talking about! He would die if he knew I was only footsteps away from the guy he wanted to drill in an interview. Wait. I can get that interview. I can put out that article. Yes! Then I can get my job back and everything will be back to normal.
I had to think of away to get Apolo to tell me stuff no one else knew. I had to gain his trust. But how?
I can seduce him. No that’s stupid; you’re not a bond girl. Well if I can get friendly with him…be a little flirtatious, then maybe I can get him to trust me enough.
But who was I kidding? I wasn’t a serial flirter. I had to start somewhere, so I made my way down to the bench as he sat down to take a breather.
“Wow Apolo, that was amazing! I’ve never really seen anything like that before.”
“Yeah I guess. Can you hand me that water bottle over there? Thanks.”
I passed it to him. He took a sip and started to wipe the sweat off his face with a towel. Apolo then unzipped the top of his skin suit and ran the towel along his chest and under arms.
Delia. Stop looking at his toned chest. Don’t get distracted.
“Hey! Maybe you can explain the sport better to me sometime. I’d like to get more familiar with it since I’m going to be helping you guys out and stuff,” as I tried to smile flirtatiously feeling like a huge idiot.
“I don’t know. I’m pretty busy. My agent’s in town so I don’t know what my schedule is right now. Here, you can take this I’m done with it. See ya.” Apolo stood up, zipped his suit back up, and threw his towel down to me, which landed on top of my head. As he left, I heard him chuckle under his breath.
This is freakin’ disgusting.
I snatched the towel off of me and threw it on the ground.
What a prick.
I’m gonna have to strategize this plan well. This wasn’t as easy as I thought it as going to be.
