hey everyone! i've written a couple fanfics before, including apolo fic ,and i've gotten back into the game. i'm going off to college with a journalism major and wanted to get back into writing mode before the summer is through. i'm happy to have apolo wake me up and go back to writing. it's been a while, so please bear with me. other than that enjoy the first chapter! jelikah.
SUMMARY: Delia Kane's been a writing prodigy from an early age. With hard work, skipping high school, and moving directly into college, she's made a name for herself in the media as a top reporter for Addiction Magazine. It seems life gets better as she's been promoted to Addiction's Entertainment Editor, makng her the youngest executive editor in the NYC media scene. But one careless move causes her to miss covering one of the biggest stories of the year. Delia can't do anything but run and hide and hops on to the first available flight. Her huge screw up has landed her at the Colorado Springs Olympic Training Center and has been mistaken for the new short track assistant team manager. Though she is extremely unqualifyed, she can't help but say yes as she realizes that a certain athlete who's been dubbed "media shy" can help her get her job back. (dun dun DUN.lol)
disclaimer: i don't know/own apolo (d**n i wish) or any other skaters mention. i don't even know much about colorado springs. do as i'm doing and just roll with it. however, i do own delia kane. alright onto the story!
Chapter 1:
I sat in the company car that picked me up every morning, reading my magazine's competitors. I had to laugh to knowing no matter how hard they tried, they'd never match up to Addiction Magazine's status. Yes, I admit I've made some enemies by being one of the best. Lord knows I'm going to hell by the messages left by people in the NYC media circle who were "displeased" with me. I've made huge sacrifices and missed out on a lot by skipping high school to study at Syracuse University. I graduated at eighteen after the first semester. While others we're getting ready prom and graduation parties, I was already on an internship with the National Enquirer, thus helping me achieve my gift for being a snoop and getting the story out before anyone else could. A year later, and I’m now the youngest lead reporter for Addiction.
"We're here Miss Kane. You have a good day!" said my driver as he opened the door for me.
"Thanks Michael. You have a good one too."
I walked through the lobby, being greeted by Grace, the receptionist, as I made my way into the elevator that had already been invaded by Nadine, a fellow reporter.
"Delia! Great cover on the Lance Bass story. I'd say, it's been the most personal he's gotten with any reporter on his ‘coming out’."
"Thank You! Well I worked hard for that story and I knew there was so much more info he wanted to share. I had to fight till the end to convince Mark to let me do it," as I tried to pull off the most convincing fake smile I could.
Yeah. I had to fight, because this two faced hasbin wanted the story as well. I stepped out of the elevator to quickly escape Nadine's oh so interesting story on how she met Cher's wig maker.
Ha! Must've been losing hair with all the air she's got in her head. There's probably no room for any to grow.
I headed into my cubicle to find that my co-worker Steve was already there with his own personal daily dish. Steve was basically my partner in crime and the editor of sports entertainment. Secretly, I had a small crush on him. But I know we’d never date because of the age difference.
"Hey Steve. Looks like you had a rough night."
His usually well groomed blond hair was flattened on one side and sticking up on the other. He perfected the "just got outta bed look" with his imported hair gel and his dedicated time in the bathroom hours before he needed to be in Addiction's office. And well in this case, he did it without even noticing. His green eyes were blood shot obviously due to lack of sleep.
"Del baby, you wouldn't believe what I had to go through before I got into work today! I've been trying to reach the sports agency that covers that new "bad girl" of tennis for the past week for an interview. Now I've been on the phone from the time I left work yesterday until I got here and I get an email from her publicist saying that she's been checked into rehab for alcohol abuse. So I can't write anything except that the love of her life is Jack Daniel's. "
"So what are you planning to do?"
"Well I got a couple people lined up to be in the Sport's main feature. But the one person I wanna get and everyone in this town wants, doesn't give up the goods to any big time magazine or newspaper.
"And who exactly might that be?"
"That speed skater. Apolo Ohno."
My mind was blank. I didn't keep up with sports. I hardly watched TV being that I knew the top stories even before it was broadcasted to America and the world.
"Umm...who?"
"DEL! Come on! Apolo Anton Ohno! Olympic Gold Medalist? He's put short track speed skating on the map. He's like the cover boy for the d**n sport. Hell! Practically the Winter Olympics itself!
“Yeah…I’m just going to leave the sports stuff to you. Go on.”
“Ohno’s made it big in the 2002 and 2006 Olympics. Word’s been going around that he might not continue to participate in the Vancouver games. If he does retire, he wants to pursue a career in entertainment, even thought he has no acting experience at all. And you out of all people should know how it is when athlete makes a decision to come into the entertainment world. I mean, look at Jordan and Shaq. Amazing on the court. But do you think they had enough talent on the big screen to win an Oscar? He’s been given offers and already he’s acting like a big shot. It’s a disaster waiting to happen.”
I couldn’t have agreed with him more. It was unlikely for athletes to be extremely successful in that kind of business. But there’s was nothing I loved more in the entertainment business than failure. At Addiction, our best stories are only the way they are because we’re hard ass reporters. We interrogate and ask the questions that no one else is brave enough to ask. We’re not afraid to hurt feelings. Steve’s even made Michelle Kwan cry, which he described in his article “A heart breaking, yet warm moment with the skater.”
“But anyway, I got some good news for you!” Steve said excitedly.
Finally! Something that’s coming out of his cute mouth that I can understand.
“Yes?!? What is it??” Please let it be the editor opening!
“Overheard Mark talking to the company’s board of executives. They plan on telling you that you’ve got the job this afternoon!
I didn’t even get a chance to express my excitement because Mark, our editor-in-chief, was already outside the cubicle.
“Vlasco, do you mind? I need to talk to Kane.”
Steve nodded and got up. As he walked away, he gave me a thumbs up and mouthed “You got this!”
“Delia, step into my office. I’ve got one hell of a proposition for you.”
****************************************************
Steve waited at my desk after I spoke with Mark.
“Well…?”
“I…I got the job.”
Steve yelled out and picked me up in his arms. I wasn’t even thinking straight to realize what was happening. I just replayed the scenario in my head.
" And congrats again Delia. Remember I want you to get everything you can from Katie and Tom. Addiction is the first magazine to show pictures of their baby. I’m putting you in charge of the photo shoot as well. I’m only giving this issue’s main feature to the best and frankly you are the best. "
“Look. I don’t care what you say. We’re celebrating tonight.” Steve told me. I didn’t care; I was on top of the world.
* SO PEOPLE. GIVE ME SOME FEEDBACK. TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK. I'M HERE TO ANSWER YOU'RE QUESTIONS. THERE WILL BE TONS MORE APOLO IN THE FOLLOWING CHAPTER. BUT I CAN'T UNTIL I SEE SOME GREAT SUPPORT TO CONTINUE. THE SOONER I GET YOUR OPINIONS,THE SOONER THE NEXT CH. WILL BE UP. THANKS!
