Business or Pleasure – Chapter 5
Katrina tossed in her sleep, visions of Apolo running through her subconscious mind.
She had been waiting for him while walking around the cafeteria. She saw him come through the doors looking around for her. He had showered and changed and his hair was brushed back and still damp. “Little boy lost, very cute,” Katrina thought. “God I almost forgot how young he is.”
There was nothing young about the look Apolo gave Katrina when he spotted her. The look was that of a man who knew what he wanted and was about to get it... confident, thingyy and sexy as sin. Katrina’s stomach did a flip.
“Hey,” Apolo said taking her hand. “Have I kept you waiting?”
“No, its fine, I’ve been wandering around getting used to the place. Listen Apolo, I know you said you would introduce me to everyone but could we sit alone.” Apolo arched a brow and Katrina rushed on to explain. “I want to talk with you about what to expect from the firm and the reporting at the Olympics before I have to go back to L.A.” Katrina’s nerves where getting the better of her and the way he kept hold of her fingers was making her whole arm tingle.
A small frown line appeared on Apolo’s forehead. Apolo hadn’t thought about her leaving already. “Okay, let’s get something to eat and then we can talk. I am starving,” Apolo said with a small laugh that made the frown disappear and his eyes light up. They decided on grilled chicken salads and found a table a little away from some of his friends.
While Apolo started to eat Katrina explained to him what to expect at the Olympics. “I know you have been competing for a long time and have been to the World Cups but there is nothing like the coverage for the Olympics. The media will be all over the people they think have a chance to medal and you are going to have to give numerous interviews. Our firm will have no control over any of the coverage in Salt Lake and we probably won’t even be able to get near you. We will need to be in communication with someone who can reach you while you’re there. If you do win a medal, you will have offers to immediately appear on a number of TV shows.”
Apolo looked at Katrina, “You will be there in Salt Lake, won’t you?” He was surprised at the disappointment he felt at the thought of her not being there to see him skate.
Katrina could see the sadness in his eyes and was touched. “He has such expressive eyes,” she thought. She reached across the table and took his hand. “I already have my tickets but you have to remember I’m not a journalist or associated with the Olympics so I will be there as a spectator. I’ll be working most of the time on the phone lining up opportunities for you but a lot of that depends on the outcome of your races. We most likely won’t see each other until you’re booked to do different shows or events.” Katrina ate some of her salad and looked at Apolo. She wondered how the athletes coped with training, the pressure to win and the media at such young ages. She new many of them fell apart and would never have a chance to medal. How would Apolo do? Was he capable of winning like the coaches and the information she had received on him indicated.
Apolo was quiet and she hoped she hadn’t made this harder for him. “Apolo, how do you feel about going to the Olympics? Are you nervous? You seem really confident out on the ice.”
It was amazing, he had only met her yesterday but her questions made him want to share all his hopes, dreams and feelings with her. “I love skating. Being out on the ice is the most amazing feeling. I’ve trained hard and I think I’ll do well but you never know with short track. You saw what a race can be like and the skaters from the other countries are really good. All I can do is skate my best, give it all I have and see what happens.”
Katrina could see that he was waiting for her to say something. She couldn’t believe he had such a mature attitude considering his age. “Apolo, I’ve never met anyone your age that seems to have their head together the way you do. You know exactly what you want and you’re giving it all you have. I really admire that.”
Katrina sat back and pushed her chair away from the table. “I’m going to have to meet with Jeff and the coaches in a little while. Do you have time to walk me to the lobby?”
“Sure Katrina,” Apolo said as you got to his feet. “When will you be back again?” he asked.
“Apolo, I probably won’t see you again until the Olympics. I’ll call and keep you posted on any offers you have. If I can’t get to you directly in Salt Lake, who can we call that can get to you?”
“I guess the best person for you to talk to is my Dad, he can always reach me. I’ll tell him to call your office so you can introduce yourselves. I’ll give you my cell number, you can call me anytime.”
They reached the lobby and Katrina turned to Apolo and took his hand. “I can’t wait to see you in Salt Lake Apolo. You are going to be amazing.” Katrina looked into Apolo’s eyes, reached up brushed her lips along his cheek. When she pulled back Apolo had a soft look in his eyes and she felt herself melting.
“What the hell am I doing?” Katrina suddenly thought. “He’s a client. He’s 19 and I’m 24. This is not good.”
Apolo felt the shift in Katrina’s emotions. He saw a hardness fill her eyes and he thought, “S**t, what the hell just happened. I don’t want to leave it at this.”
Apolo stepped closer to Katrina and took her in a swift hug. He whispered in her ear, “Call me. I need to hear from you.” Then he let her go, smiled, turned and walked away.
Katrina woke shaking. The alarm was blaring and Minx was nowhere to be seen. “d**n, there is no way I’m ready for this day,” Katrina thought rubbing her eyes.
Meeting with Nicky wouldn’t be a problem. The extra work wasn’t a problem for her either. It was the thought of having to work with Apolo again that she was dreading. Had anything changed? Could she control her emotions enough to get through this? Well she would just have to try as she didn’t have any other option.
