Thanks again for the reviews. The next few chapters will contain flashbacks. Hope you enjoy!
Business or Pleasure – Chapter 3
Katrina fought with herself to concentrate on the drive home. It took about 40 minutes to reach her condo in the suburbs of Los Angeles and by that time she was so exhausted she just wanted a hot bath and bed.
Her cat, Minx, a golden long hair, met her at the door and she scooped him up and cuddled him on the way out to the kitchen. She fed Minx, grabbed a drink and ran a hot bath.
“I just need to relax, get myself under control and remember that this is just business,” Katrina thought as she leaned back in the large tub. The scent of warm vanilla rose from the bath crystals. Katrina closed her eyes. Thoughts of the first time she met Apolo ran through her mind.
FLASHBACK
Katrina finished college and had been training as a booking agent for the past six months. She had gotten over the initial feelings of being star struck when she met famous authors, actors, athletes and musicians and was starting to find she had a knack for matching the right marketing with the different celebrities. She also had great instincts for spotting a future star.
She was working with Jeff, a senior level field agent and had been instructed to meet with a new client who would be competing in the upcoming Salt Lake City Olympics. She was reviewing a file on Apolo Anton Ohno, a short track speed skater, on the plane on their way out to met him at the Olympic training center in Colorado Springs.
Katrina read over the very short bio and looked at a couple of photos. “Cute guy,” she thought, “impressive list of wins leading up to the Olympics. Too bad most of America doesn’t even know what short track is. It will limit the marketing opportunities. If he were a figure skater or skier a lot more doors would be open to him.”
Katrina had searched out information on short track when they were handed the assignment but neither she nor Jeff had ever seen a race. They were going to see a training session, watch some tapes of past races and meet with Apolo to discuss a marketing plan.
After arriving, Jeff and Katrina checked into their hotel outside the training center and headed for their first meeting with Apolo. They were waiting in a conference room at the center when Apolo entered.
Apolo was a little nervous but had become well able to handle interviews with people he had just met. Dealing with reporters after races may be a pain but it did teach you how to handle yourself. His coaches and his father had told him that if he won a medal at the Olympics he should already have an agent to handle all the media attention it would generate. He still wasn’t sure he was happy with the idea of someone scheduling his time and activities but he had given in and signed with a management and marketing firm.
Jeff and Katrina rose from their seats as Apolo walked in and extended his hand. “Hello, Jeff and Katrina, I’m Apolo. It’s nice to meet you both. Thanks for traveling out here for the meeting,” Apolo greeted them with a shy smile. They exchanged greetings and settled in to discuss the opportunities the firm thought would be available to Apolo.
When he shook Katrina’s hand and looked into her eyes he felt a jolt. “My, my, she is a pretty little thing. Maybe working with an agent won’t be so bad,” he thought. He was glad that he would have someone young to work with him.
Katrina sat following the conversation between Jeff and Apolo. “He looks younger in person than he did in the pictures,” Katrina thought. She sat studying him and adding up marketing pluses in her head. “He has a really great smile, a good voice.” “I love his long hair and he has absolutely beautiful eyes.” “Oh my, if he has talent he could be a winner,” Katrina thought smiling to herself.
They discussed possible TV opportunities such as talk shows, magazine and print marketing and endorsement deals. After about two hours they were finally agreed on a preliminary plan.
“Apolo, we are very excited to be working with you and we will start working up the plans we’ve discussed. We may want to make some changes or add some new ideas once we get to see you in training and watch the race tapes,” Katrina said.
When they stood to leave they shook hands again. This time, when Apolo took Katrina’s hand and she looked into his eyes, she felt her heart flutter. “Oh he is definitely a charmer,” she thought.
Katrina rose up out of the now cold tub and rubbed her eyes. “Enough of this,” she thought. “I have to get some sleep.”
