Chapter 5
How she got back she didn’t know how long she didn’t know that either. She snuck her self back into the party and fixed her self up a bit.
“Where the hell have you been Jacqueline?” James was furious and being aggressive.
“I told you I went to go get some fresh air”
“For an hour?”
“That long?”
“Don’t play stupid”
“What? Get off me your drunk”
Things cooled down a bit between them. Everything ended she went home and cried herself to sleep in her clothes.
She awoke with a start. She had forgotten that it was the day of the track trials. She got ready hoping she didn’t exist.
Apolo was devastated.
“How could I let this happen to me? I’m such an idiot. I thought she was sincere and for real and all that crap. I how in the hell do I get over her?”
“What’s eating Apolo?” Shani had been observing Apolo for some time. “We need to get in the practice rhythm. It’s a team effort man. If you aren’t in it then we all fall apart. Know what I mean? Get it?”
“Yeah I know”, he snapped.
“Excuse me, what bit you?” Shani was bothered by his attitude.
“Sorry rough night”
“Yeah, I figured”, he gave him a 'I want to cheer you up but know I can’t' smile.
Practice didn’t go all too well, but in the end he got in the game.
He needed to tell someone what was eating him inside. Apolo decided to go for a walk to think. Shani decided to do the same, to think with him. Apolo told him everything, he was lost for words. They passed a school and saw a lot of activity so decided to stop.
“It doesn’t beat the ice Apolo”
“Lets just check it out, its like skating on dirt”
“Fine”
There she was, ready determined ready to qualify for her college school team spot. She burned the competition; they were awed by her speed.
“Ouch, it hurts coach”, her legs were throbbing with pain.
“It’s okay walk it off, you still have two races, what did you do last night to get your legs so tired?”
“Nothing, I’m just tired”, she tried to play it off.
She earned her spot by getting the top times.
“You made it sis, you rocked”
“Yeah, just don’t let it slip in front of our parents. I think my ankle is swelling, if I hadn’t run off last night”. She gave a short sigh.
“Sorry things didn’t work out”
“Me too”
She spotted him in the bleachers, ‘what the hell?’ He went up to her.
“I come up to you as an athlete. Nice race”
“Thank you”
It was agony enough that she was in pain, ‘but this’, she wanted to get up but winced every time. Apolo felt rather bad, ‘I did make her run a good while’.
“Here let me help you”, he offered.
“No! You leave her alone” Maria, Jacqueline’s sister, retorted. “You didn’t want to hear her out right? So what now, you didn’t care for her last night and now you do?” she was furious.
He was perplexed and lost for words.
“Maria please”, Jacqueline pleaded, “leave it, leave things the way they are”
“She’s right, Shani lets go”, he walked away.
“Hey man, aren’t you being a bit cold, harsh, evil…”
“I get it, it’s just that this girl got me, she ripped my soul out”
“You told me she didn’t mean to, that she was sincere and had a reason. Hear her out”
He didn’t say anything for a while.
“Gosh your stubborn, just think about it. See you later Ohno”
“Alright, thanks”
“Give it up sis, he’ll come around”
“And if he doesn’t?”
“I told you, he’ll come around”
They were both under the moonlight torturing themselves with thoughts of each other for each other; feeling guilty. Their minds working overtime they didn’t know what do to. When they finally went to bed, they only went to bed thinking of each other.
