Chapter 8
Why is she doing this to me? I’m only trying to help her. I started pacing back and forth looking down the hallway that Danni had gone through. Everything is okay Apolo, she was just upset. She didn’t mean what she said. I sighed when I felt my phone vibrating in my pocket.
“Hello?”
“Apolo man where the hell are you? I’ve been looking all over for you.”
“Shani I need you to do me a favor.”
“Ah crap Apolo… what did you do now?”
“Nothing I just…I’m just not there right now.” I ran my hands through my hair out of frustration.
“What do you mean you’re not here right now? Where are you…do I really want to know this?”
“Shani, just please tell coach that Danni and I had to leave. There was an emergency and that we’ll head back to Colorado when everything has settled down.”
“You’re kidding me. What’s the big emergency that you had to leave here for?”
“Shani please.” I knew he could tell when I was desperate and these were just one of those moments. I heard him sigh.
“Alright, what do I tell him when he asks where you guys are?”
“Tell him he doesn’t need to worry about it. Thanks Shani, I owe you one.”
“It’s cool man. Whatever it is you’re up to…hope you figure it out.” I heard the line click and I immediately turned off my cell phone. What would I do without him? He was always there to try and help, sometimes with no questions asked. I looked down the hallway again when I saw Danni emerge out of one of the rooms. She reached out with one hand to steady herself on the wall as she used the other to cover her mouth. Her shoulders shuddering and from where I stood I could hear distant sobbing. She was crying. I was just about to go towards her when she suddenly started running down the hallway. She was just about to go past me when I grabbed a hold of her shoulders.
“Let go of me. Let go of me!” I could see her tear stained face as she tried to fight me off. Oh my god…what’s going on…what’s happening. I tried to bring her closer but she kept trying to push me away. “I told you not to come. Why did you come?”
“I’m here for you Danni please. Calm down.”
“I told you not to come. I didn’t want you to see me like this. Are you happy? Is this what you wanted to see?” She was fighting a losing battle as she tried to scream at me through her sobbing. I let go of her shoulder and pulled her into a fierce hug as she sobbed into my shoulder. I didn’t know what to do but to just hold her. I hated myself for not being able to do anything. She finally stopped trying to push me away and wrapped her arms around me.
“Shh…breath…calm down.” What’s going on?
(What happened in the room)
“Oh my god. How long has she been like this?” Danni looked to the nurse and looked back at her beaten mother. Her face was purple from the bruises as she lay on the hospital bed unconscious.
“She was brought in like this Ms. Lee. The doctors have checked everything she didn’t have any massive injuries. No internal bleeding, just a lot of bruising, and a concussion. Your mother may come out of unconsciousness any time now. She was very lucky.”
“You call this lucky?”
“It could’ve been worse. She could’ve been killed.” Danni sighed and set next to her mother, taking her hand.
“Did the caretakers tell you happened?”
“Yes. They said that your mother liked to go on walks everyday. She went out on her usual walk, but when she didn’t return at her usual time they began to worry. They were afraid that she had…”
“Forgotten her way back.” Danni looked at her mother and she could feel the tears in her eyes.
“She was found beaten. We can only assume that she was robbed seeing as how her jewelry and purse were gone.”
“So you know of her condition then.”
“The Alzheimer’s yes.”
“Have you or my mother’s caretaker called my father?”
“He’s the first person we called Ms. Lee. We were unable to get in touch with him, which is why we called you. I’ll leave you alone now Ms. Lee.” The door shut close and the room became silent other than the monotone beep of the life monitor. Danni sat there clutching her mothers hand for what seemed like hours but were really only few short minutes. It wasn’t long when she felt her mother stir.
“Mom?” Her mother seemed groggy at first but soon looked carefully at her surroundings and at Danni.
“Where am I?”
“You’re in the hospital mom.”
“The hospital?” She finally noticed their entwined hands and immediately removed her hand from Danni’s. “Who are you?”
“It’s me mom.”
“Mom?”
“Yes. It’s me, Danni, your only daughter.”
“No that’s impossible I don’t have a daughter.” Tears started to flow down Danni’s cheek as she realized that her own mother did not recognize her.
“Mom please…” She began to sob.
“No…I don’t know you. Get out of my room. Get out of my room!” Danni slowly stood up from where she sat and went to the door. She gave her mother one last look and whispered I love you under her breath as she left the room. Once outside she put her hand to the wall to steady herself only to sob even harder as Apolo looked on from afar.
Apolo’s POV
I continued to cradle Danni as she cried. I heard her mumble something and I let go of her to hear her more clearly.
“I can’t stay here” I looked over her shoulder down the hallway she just came from and looked back into her eyes. I nodded my head. I knew she would tell me in time, I knew this was not a good time to push her.
“Okay. Let’s go.” I put my arm around her shoulder as she leaned against me. I kissed her forehead and tried my best to ease her mind when suddenly she was grabbed out of my arm. What the hell? I turned around ready to take out whoever had done that when I came face to face with a tall Asian man that I could only assume was Danni’s father. He glared at me for a few moments and turned his attention on Danni.
(Italics are Korean)
“I thought you would come here.”
“Where have you been? How come you didn’t answer the hospital’s phone call?” I kept looking back and forth trying to get some idea at what they were talking about.
“So this is how you’ve been spending your time. With this boy.” Her father gave me the dirtiest look before he turned back to Danni.
“That’s the least of your concern. Mom is lying in a hospital bed.”
“Were you with him the entire time? Sleeping with a cheater?” I saw Danni’s eyes go wide at what her father had just said. I wish I knew what was going on.
“Don’t even go there. Even if I was, since when did you start caring so much?”
“You’re not going anywhere but back home tonight.” I saw him grab her arm and start to drag her away.
“Let go of me. Leave me alone!” I immediately reacted.
“Hey, let her go!” I went straight up to both of them and forced his hand off of Danni’s arm. I immediately stood in front of her blocking her from her father. “She obviously doesn’t want to go with you so why don’t you just leave her alone.” He sneered at me and laughed.
“Don’t get mixed in with our own family matters.”
“You don’t seem like much of a father figure.”
“You don’t seem like such a good athletic figure. Pushing people down and raising your hands like a coward just so you can win the gold.” That was just personal. You can call me an ass, a bastard, but a cheater was just crossing the line. “Now give me my daughter back.”
“No.”
