HI, all! Just want to log in and say thank you for all the details about last night, the links, pics, and articles. So frustrating that we couldn't see it! I still wish I understood why Apolo seemed to have been "lapped" in the 3000m superfinal and/or why Lee and Jeff appear to have started early. Odd. But, it's clear Apolo knew where he needed to finish in order to win the Championship, and he did it. I'm so proud! I'm also proud of Ryan, #5 skater in the world, and Jeff, #7 skater in the world. I think they should be really proud of themselves. And Katherine, #7 her first year out, and Allison, #12 after such a tough year. Also, kudos to the extras on the relay teams! I would STILL like to understand the live feed stats/splits and how they can differ from the final places and times listed. And how is it possible that Apolo was physically first for the entire 500, and yet his splits showed him to be behind. I'm still confused... As for our frustration about the ISU, and losing the live feed, I supposed no one is to blame for the satellite going out. At least they kept the results updated. But, I do think the US Speedskating needs a few letters written. After all, they're the ones who should be promoting short track in the states, and providing video feed for the fans. Why is it left up to WCSN to show them a couple of weeks later? I think the USS website needs serious help. I know they updated recently, but it opens bigger than my screen, and no scroll bars pop up, so there are some things i can't even access. Anyway... There is a download on the ISU website titled "Result Protocol" which appears on the Results page: www.sportresult.com/federations/ISU/ShortTrack/Results.aspx?evt=11210100000010&gen=m&ref=3080&view=oclIt downloads quickly, and gives 69 pages of race results and the skater's points, etc. Details of the men's Overall Classification are on page 65; the ladies are somewhere in the middle. It gives the placement of each skater in each race, which helps one understand how points are assigned and why it was possible for Apolo to win despite a DQ in the 1500 final. I think maybe Lori or some other knowledgeable short track angel posted the point value given to each position during nationals, but I really don't remember details! Overall, I don't see how anyone can deny Apolo's prowess. Technically, he finished first in the 1500 (since I, for one, dispute the DQ ), first in the 500, and second in the 1000. I don't know what was going on with the 3000 superfinal, but Apolo skated what he needed to. No doubt he could have crossed first rather than third, if he so desired. Really, he dominated. Yeah, baby!

Linmiste, Let me see if I can 'splain it how the points are awarded. The skaters get points for how they place in the heats, the quarterfinals, the semi finals and the finals. Even though Apolo was DQ'd in the FINAL of the 1500, he still had accrued points for being first or second for all the races leading up to the final. So he only looses points for the final. What the points are saying, is that Apolo was consistantly at the top for every race he skated. (If he had been DQ'd at the beginning of the 1500, say the quarter finals, he would have lost points for the whole event, since he wouldn't have advanced to gain points in the Semi and the final because of it. Does this make sense? Clear as Mud? Which just means you have to come to a competition, because suddenly it all makes sense and is SO clear. LOL! Oh, and it's RYAN who came in second in the 3000m. Watch the video, you can see him and the Korean bolt away from the pack in the first couple of laps, which is UNHEARD of in such a long and exhausting race. They were a full lap ahead of everyone. Smart move, and it really paid off for him!

Is it on that NBC universal hi def, too? We don't have it here, so have to beg someone to make a copy? ? I belong to the Moody blues fan-based group online. In the past, when someone had recorded a copy to share, we did a *TAPE-TREE* (before DVDs)... or a *ROUND-ROBIN*. Tape-tree works better, dispersing copies more quickly. The person who is able to record the broadcast would have the *original* and make several copies (example: 6)... then mail the 6 to different peeps, known as *branches*, who then each make 6 more copies... mailing these to 6 more peeps/branches... and so on. I'd be willing to be one of the *branches*, to make copies... if someone is able to record the broadcast. Hi Lily - Count me in as a branch! Problem is you'll have to get some technogeek to help me. DVR'd all the DWTSs for my granddaughter. Tried to burn to DVD. Tried everything I could think of and bought 3 different burners. No luck. Finally someone told me that I can't buy a DVD burner that will record Hi-Def. They make them...just not usually for the general public as they are too expensive. Do you think he was giving me a line of bull....? I have a Hi-Def 1080 DLP TV, digital cable and DVR. If you (or anyone) can give me any pointers, I'll be your copy girl.

Smart move, and it really paid off for him! mtnme and all: We were all confused last night about Apolo's finish in the Superfinal because we started watching the clip somewhere close to the middle and didn't see the two guys lap the field. After watching the entire clip this morning, I'm wondering if setting out a "pace rabbit" who had no chance of mathematically placing in the medals was the Koreans' strategy to begin with to try to grab valuable points away from Apolo and also throw him off his game. Do you think Coach Jae knew this might happen and assigned one of his own (Charles) who also didn't have a mathematical chance to medal overall to counter him? I'm just speculating, but if this is the case, I think that was a brilliant move on Coach Jae's part and an even more stunning and wonderful performance by Charles to stay with him. It will be interesting to see what Apolo's and the Coach's comments are about this rare fast pace for 3000m when they are interviewed by the American press (here's hoping). Whether intentional or not, I think coach Jae has brought a new approach to US speedskating that has never before been seen here (the Korean approach to training as Apolo just called it in his most recent interview) and we're seeing great results. The U.S. team seems to be thrilled with it because I've read so many of their comments praising coach Jae. Hard work they all admit, but I think that they're all just happy to finally get a coach that can maximize all their potentials and they all seem more than willing to work for him. Kudos to the entire coaching staff and all the U.S. team. I have such high hopes for them in 2010. Let's hope we can keep Coach Jae and the disfunctional USS doesn't run him off before then. That's been one of Apolo's big gripes with the USS--that they were not able to provide consistent coaching through the years. I think at one point in his career, he had a different coach every year for 10 years??? I think that in the picture posted of Apolo hugging his coach, each one of those pictured were at one time (and presently) his coach. Great stuff last night. I was here, but too nervous to "talk." Thanks to all for the updates, pictures, etc.

It's so good to know that I am not the only one having trouble burning DVDs...and I do not have Hi-Def. I feel your headaches...you have my sympathy. Today I tivo'ed korean television figuring there would be some mention of sppedskating and maybe I could get some good video or photos out of it. As it turns out, my cable company dumped korean TV from it's regular line up. We used to have it...I have watched it before. But now it's gone. Arrrggggggghhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!

I didn't realize you got points as you progressed,, just thought it was from standings in the final race. What a sweet surprise Ryan and the Korean had....no one pursued them! Essentially they kicked butt for a few early lalps and then sat back and rested. About the pic with Apolo and Jimmy Jang...is he still with the US or is he coaching somewhere else now? I know that he was key in Apolo's 2006 Olympic successes.

I had an old LP I wanted to update to CD for my dad's Christmas. Found a professional who would do it. He had every piece of equipment you could think of. Look for a professional and see if they can take your DVR and convert to DVD for you--us--cough cough!

I'll make a few calls tomorrow. In the meantime...if anyone has any suggestions, I'm listening.
PS - If I can figure this out, I still have the WC6 recorded. Maybe I could copy that also. But the same problem...recorded in HD off UNHD.

I do think it's kind of neat that they award points as the skaters progress, so the final score reflects all their efforts, not just whether they medaled in every race. That rewards consistency, and gives a better sense of who the best overall athlete is. I do remember someone (you? Lori?) posting that first place skaters get like 18 points, second place 13, third place 9, fourth place 7, fifth place 3, etc. -- or something to that effect -- but I have no idea where. Did I imagine it? In any case, this was a fun weekend. Anyone know who is skating at Team Worlds? Isn't that next weekend?
