Here's the schedule for this weekend in Milwaukee - there should be a link for the live feed on usspeedskating.org on Friday when the competition starts. Since they're combining 2 events, I've put the American Cup schedule in bold to differentiate it...
It doesn't look like there's any time overlap at all between this event and the World Championships. AmCup by day and WC by night - it's gonna be a busy weekend!
If you watch this, e-mail Kori Novak at media@usspeedskating.org and let them know you appreciate it! ---------------------------------------- FRIDAY 5:40am (Pacific); 8:40am (Eastern) - Masters Events 10:15am (Pacific); 1:15pm (Eastern) - Age Group Quarter Finals 12:15pm (Pacific); 3:15pm (Eastern) - American Cup 1500M Semi Finals 12:45pm(Pacific); 3:45pm (Eastern) - Age Group Semi Finals 2:25pm (Pacific); 5:25pm (Eastern) - American Cup 1500M Finals 2:55pm (Pacific); 5:55pm (Eastern) - Age Group Finals 3:50pm (Pacific); 6:50pm (Eastern) - 3000M Relay Semi Finals; assuming this is the AmCup

Yeah, Barry blew the field away in the B final. I hope he continues to progress. In the A final the scoreboard listed Simon Cho, but he wasn't in the race - I wonder what happened.
I saw Anthony Barthell skate in the semis (came in 5th, I believe), and in the relay. SOCAL rocked the relay!
It looked like pretty good attendance for a Friday, but I guess when you have tons of little kids coming from all over the country they tend to bring with them quite an entourage of parents, grandmas, aunties/uncles, etc. with their video cameras...
Anybody gonna be watching today?
Sarah and Jackie Chen won their finals yesterday. Jackie's a Pony (9-10 yrs old), and Sarah's a Midget (11-12 yrs). Joyce had told me about them at Nationals, and we later had a chance to meet them and their mom. Adorable kids, and they're phenoms on the ice as well - watch them in the next few years!

that goes from me too!!! he's one of my favorite up and comers...GO JR! Me too! JR is one to watch, along with Simon. I'm very excited for the future of short track because of these two skaters especially. I have followed Simon since he was just a little thing dominating his races... and now look at him! And JR... well, the hair and the Seattle thing... what else needs to be said! Good luck to both on their final day.

Man! I just came on as Anthony Barthell was going to skate his quarter final. Someone else fell and took him out. He left the ice before they restarted the race. I hope he isn't hurt. Bummer....

That was odd about Anthony. There were no DQ's in that race (other than the guy with 2 false starts), but after the race the announcer said 'Anthony Barthell was required to leave the ice when the race was stopped because of his mishap.' Strange. Tina K was also DQ'd with 2 false starts , but TRAVIS WON FOR THE MEN! In one of the age-group quarterfinals there was a race that was reminiscent of Apolo's 1000M in 2002. 3 skaters crashed in the corner on the last turn and the #4 skater, about a half-lap behind 'did a Bradbury'... And how about those Chen sisters? They've been flawless so far. The older one, Sarah (all of about 12) broke her own national record 3 times today, the last time by a full second! The future of US short track is looking gooooood! BTW, did anybody see the Sausage Race? Too funny! Chorizo got DQ'd for 'showing too much skin'.

that reminds me of a quote from American Pie 2 one of my fave movies "it looks like we have a sausage fest,an abundance of weiner" and with that I will get my mind out of the gutter.

I have a little question, does Apolo have any competitions during the summer or is that his break? I might be going to Utah in July and want to stop by the Kearns Oval to say hi to him.

If I am correct, I believe they have the Spring months off, but go back to training in June. You just might be able to catch him. Tell him "hi" for me too! Don't forget.

Just got this link in from USS - Jerry Search has posted pics from this event. I particularly like his lead-in: I focused (no pun intended) on getting more of the kids, the younger skaters, since I have featured the older skaters several times before during this season. Besides being a kick to watch, these kids are the future of our sport! While most will move on to other things in life, some of these kids may be future Olympians! One example: A young Rusty Smith can be seen here at the Pettit Center back in 1993. Of the others, many (if not most) will be able to use their experiences in Speed Skating to achieve their future personal life goals.
One such person is Rebeca Toledo, another skater whom I coached years ago. Rebeca, who did not make any Teams, and did not win a National Championship, is now Strategic Marketing Manager/Licensing Manager for Sony BMG Music Entertainment in Norway. She credits her 4 years as a Speed Skater with helping her to choose a life of education rather than one of partying. So regardless of whether or not these kids continue on, they will, for the most part, become successful as a result of their participation in Speed Skating!
Does actually winning relate to how good of a skater the young skater will be? What about those kids who do not win a National Championship when they are young? Well, winning when you are young does not necessarily prove how you will do when you are older. Did you know that Bonnie Blair, who was born into a speed skating family, started skating with she was just 2 years old, and started racing when she was 4, did not win the Nationals until she was 16? That just proves that we never can tell! To quote the late Peter Williamson from Canada: "We are here to have fun. If winning occurs, that is great. But that is not why we are here. It is to have fun!" You'll have to copy and paste the link, 'cause clicking on it won't pick all of it up... www.socalspeedskating.org/albums/2008Nationals@MKE/2008NationalShortTrack.htmlThe pics aren't labeled, but I'll add a few here that I do recognize (I don't know how to make these thumbnails 'clickable', but I'll tell you how to find them in Jerry's album): Here are a couple of Anthony Barthell (Friday, Page 1, #0007-0008) Jacqueline Chen (Friday Page 1, #0040); Saturday Page 6, #264-265)
