Thought you all would enjoy this little news video shown on King5 last night. Progress on the new speed skating oval, but what is a stand out is the beautiful scenery shown about 3/4 through on the upgrade of the Sea to Sky Highway to Whistler. Simply one of the most beautiful drives on the entire planet. That is salt water you are looking at, similar to a fjord. www.king5.com/sports/stories/NW_022208OLY_vancouver_olympics_legacy_TP.1af15059.htmlI'd love it if our Vancouver members would post news links about the preparations as well as video clips from the scenery in your beautiful city. This is why I moved to Seattle from DC many years ago.

This is why I moved to Seattle from DC many years ago. Great find Kirkland, thanks for being our 'Vancouver Lookout'. It truly does look like a beautiful spot, and it's great that the area is looking toward the future as to the uses for the community after the games are over. St. Peters, Missouri put on an Olympic Festival some years ago. They built an amazing complex that housed an ice rink, indoor track, Natatorium (place for the diving and lap pools. It even had a fun little kiddie pool in it) etc, etc. After the games were over, it became the community center. I was so impressed, I did my thesis project in college on something similar for a facility like it in Tahoe. (Fat chance that would ever happen, but hey, thesis is a fantasy, so I went with it) Here are some links if anyone is interested. South Lake Tahoe finally built an indoor rink. But DRATS! yet again- like the rink in Missouri, instead of an Olympic size rink, it's an NHL size rink (15 feet too narrow for short track!) Squaw Valley has an Olympic size rink, but it's outdoors- which means a short track skater would kill themselves on it with all the crud on the ice. So much for ever seeing short track in this neck of the woods....We can't catch a break up here. If you need no further proof this ST isn't even thought about in this country, then look no further than the size of the rinks that get built. www.stpmo.com/rec-plex.htmwww.chah2o.com/projects/St.PetersRec-Plex.aspx

I keep getting e-mails from Vancouver 2010 that I've sign up for and they are now sending the series of "In Their Words" which is a "celebration of the two-year countdown to the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games. This 17-part series is comprised of personal stories written by Olympians and leaders with a passion for the Games. Visit vancouver2010.com every day from February 12 to 28 for a fresh story of inspiration, triumph and hope." I hope Apolo has written one and is included in this series. Would love to see that. But there's only five days left, so we'll see. Here's the most recent one with the athlete's stories that have appeared so far: www.vancouver2010.com/en/OrganizingCommittee/MediaCentre/FeatureStories/2008/02/14/95675_0802141408-474(wow - can you tell how bad my withdrawal is for some Apolo news....?

Hi All; As I live in Vancouver, I'll try to contribute as well when I have some news...so here is some that I don't think was covered... 1. Tickets go on sale October 11, 2008 2. The speed skating oval you saw pictures of is in Richmond and is intended for long track 3. Short track will be held at the Pacific National Exhibition grounds at the Pacific Colesseum(sorry about the spelling) . This is on the east side of the city of Vancouver. (near Hastings and Boundary Rd on a map. 4. This venue will be shared with figure skating and from what I can figure out from tentative schedules....short track will alternate with figure skating every other day 5. Great news. I wrote to VANOC after getting a notice that they would soon begin testing the venues, and received this response: Hello Karen, (musical mom) Thank you for your interest in the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. There will be an ISU Short Track Speed Skating World Cup hosted October 24-26, 2008. It is listed in the pre-Games event schedule on page two. www.vancouver2010.com/resources/PDFs/Sport_events_Operational_testing_EN.pdf Thanks again, Vancouver Info Hope you find this information useful. Let me know if I can help with local info. Musical Mom (I've corrected the link...it should work now)

One last note before I sign off for the night... I went to the listing of pre Olympic sports events and all they posted were the dates and events ,ie M/L 500,1000,1500,men's 5000 relay and womens 3000 relay. this posting didn't mention where or how to get tickets... I've written the Van Olympic committee requesting more specific information and will share it with you when it comes. It is a sponsored ISU event so we may have more luck on their web site...haven't had time to check yet...but I will... There is also and ISU Four continents Figure Skating Championships planned for Feb. 2-8 2009. March 12-15, 2009 they will hold ISU Speed Skating (long track) at the Richmond Oval I'm guessing. There are various other comps and events being held prior to the Olympics to test the venues...they started with FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup...now-Feb 21-24 in Whistler. Yes, the sea to sky highway is beautiful when it's passable...they're working on widening the highway so we have great hopes by 2010 for smoother travel no matter the weather. But the views are spectacular..You can see mountains from downtown Vancouver...Whistler where the Alpine Events are being held is also quite amazing with several expansive "Villages" ....brick and stone walkways with tons of stores and restaurants right near the lifts...there is an upper and lower village ... Just thinking, that some of these pre-events might be more enjoyable and less expensive than during the Olympics ...not quite the same...but an opportunity nonetheless. Sweet Dreams, Musical Mom
