by the way am i the only one that thinks that his skin suit looks purple in one of the above pictures of course my eyes could be seeing things. daisymomma - you're right - it does look kinda purple in the top one, but it looks like the same skin suit as the other one. Maybe it's just the way they adjusted the color, but not sure.

*UPDATE AND SUMMARY* HERE'S A SUMMARY OF THE LATEST INFO: Refer to my last complete update (Jan 11) if you need more details on anything. ----------------------------- HOTELS:IMPORTANT INFO ABOUT THE RED LION... I've gotten word that the Red Lion will honor our ORIGINAL $89 rate (for those who have already made reservations) - the rate will NOT include breakfast. Everything is exactly as it was before. I would suggest that each of you who is booked at the Red Lion (801) 521-7373 double-check your rate in advance, and I'd even advise asking them to send you an e-mail confirmation. In order to keep the manager from pulling out his hair, just notify me privately if you are getting the wrong rate, and I'll make one phone call on everyone's behalf. ...if you haven't booked yet, or if you're just tired of the mess at the Red Lion, you have options - you can contact the Hilton Garden Inn (across the street) through Anthony at anthony.barthell@hilton.com for a $79 rate (breakfast not included, but there is a restaurant), or you could opt for the Country Inn ($89) or the Crystal Inn ($80) - both Country/Crystal Inn have a hot breakfast and we were very happy there for Nationals. If you go there, make sure you tell them you're attending an event at the Oval. WHO'S GOING?Janet & Jay (Red Lion) Lori & Larry (Red Lion) Deb & Bob (Red Lion) SusanG (Red Lion) Theresa & Mom (Red Lion) Stepho (Red Lion) Karen (Red Lion) DebbieF (Hilton Garden Inn) Joyce (Hilton Garden Inn) Susie (Hilton Garden Inn) Michelle (Hilton Garden Inn) Barbara (Hilton Garden Inn) Breidy + 7 (Courtyard by Marriott - Airport) Jennifer (local) Rosh & friend Mari Cori(?) Cindy(?) GROUP DINNER7:30pm on Thursday, Feb 7, at Jersey's Sports Grill (within walking distance from the Red Lion and Hilton Garden Inn) , I need to start getting a firm headcount. So if you want to go and aren't on the list (or are on the list but can't go), please let me know! Here's who I have so far: Janet & Jay Lori & Larry Deb & Bob Theresa & Mom Joyce Michelle SusanG DebbieF Stepho Karen Jennifer (?) Cori (?) Cindy (?) Mari (?) TICKETS:TICKETS ARE ON SALE... www.brownpapertickets.com/event/26700There are no VIP tickets available to the general public - they're for sponsors and ISU officials only... also, there will be no banquet accompanying the event. MOST CURRENT SCHEDULE: webpoint.usspeedskating.org/wp/events/listmeets.asp - scroll down to the event, click 'announcement'. The start times should be accurate - I can't guess the end times, though... If you're booking flights, it would be wise to schedule as late in the day as is comfortable, to allow for medal ceremonies. You might want to consider leaving on Monday if time and finances allow it. THE YAHOO GROUP:sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/SaltLakeCityShortTrackEvents-07-08/GROUND TRANSPORTATION:Fans will NOT be allowed on the Oval shuttle - credentials will be required to ride.If the weather's bad, we could get together and reserve the Valley Shuttle (801) 566-8500, which appears to be the best 'certain' public transportation option - $30 each way from Downtown for 1 to 6 people. For larger groups they have a van that will seat 10. Cab fare is more expensive ($40). I did reserve a car - the rate I got was $249 (AAA weekly rate - Alamo) for a midsize car. For Nationals, I paid $206 for 5 days. CARPOOLING:There have been offers to rideshare and requests for ridesharing - so far, I know of one couple who still NEEDS a ride and Karen (wags) has OFFERED a ride, and last I heard, she still has room for one or two in her car. I have room for one more in my car. Any others needing / offering rides? I'll leave it to y'all to e-mail or PM each other and coordinate... CLOTHING AND OTHER PRACTICALITIESThe rink could be very cold. It wasn't very bad at all in December, but you never know. Bring warm socks; closed shoes or leather boots; gloves... Dress in layers -- maybe a turtleneck,a sweater, and a parka or ski jacket. Jeans, cords, or wool-blend pants are fine. Most people don't wear hats, but you might like to tuck a lightweight hat or headband into your pocket. You will definitely want something warm to sit on, such as a polartec throw (about $5 at the local drugstore). One is mandatory, two is nice (...one for your butt, one for your lap.) Also, think about maybe bringing a small sack or backpack (backpacks ARE allowed.) You will be carrying your fleece throws, programs, race schedules, souvenirs, etc., and it's nice to have a place to stow it all. You might also want to bring a thermal coffee mug, but they will almost certainly be selling them as commemorative souvenirs. They sell out quickly, though!

A cool pic of Apolo and co. to get you in the mood for Feb! I wasn't sure whether to post this here or in one of the picture threads. Technically it is a picture but it also has info in regards to the World Cup. I'm happy to post it elsewhere - I don't want to contribute to the loss of another thread!

Nice find, doonick! -------------------- Many of you have been asking about live web video for the world cup... up till now the answer was that USS doesn't have the rights to broadcast the races like they did for Nationals (the rights belong to ISU and they didn't have any plans to broadcast). Here's the most recent info... I asked Kori (the media / public relations director at USS) to please let me know if she hears of ANY video feed for the World Cup, even if it's thru the ISU. I got an e-mail from her yesterday saying "We are currently working on a few things that may fit the bill. Keep your eyes open for press releases etc. " let's hope! If all else fails, the ISU usually has live DATA feed at this link... www.sportresult.com/federations/ISU/ShortTrack/Just click on the link for the SLC World Cup, then click on specific events. If there's live action you should see a clickable link somewhere on the page saying something like 'live results'. (You won't see that link when there's no racing going on...) It's updated every lap with leaders and times, as well as the final results and who qualified to move on. It's not as good as video, but it's still fun to watch, and actually it's easier to see who's who... You should be able to try it out the weekend before (Feb 1-3) during World Cup #5 in Quebec.

Wow - doonick! That's a fabulous ad for the World Cup. So glad to see they are advertising the event. Love the "Apolo Anton Ohno scheduled to compete!" blurb. You find the best stuff from where you are in London. Thank you so much!

add me to the list of Who's Going!! Tickets bought from JFK-Salt Lake, driver hired to get me there from CT and mtnme and Lori offering help and advice that made the decision easier. Getting away from the job isn't a snap but for an opportunity to see a World Cup? I'm there!

Hey Lori - THANK YOU again for all of your background research and connections! I'm so excited to be going again and your information is invaluable. And I look forward to meeting everyone that wasn't there in December. I'm so bummed I'll miss Thursday's dinner, but I have to work that day so will get in late Thursday night. It looks like a really big group is going this time! That Olympic Oval is going to be ON FIRE!!!!!! GO APOLO GO! Can't wait to see you FLY around that track again !

There have been a couple of interesting developments this weekend. One of our members, Karen, had inquired at the Oval about how much it would cost for our group to be considered a 'sponsor' (therefore being invited to the VIP area). She was told that the minimum was $3000, which seemed reasonable considering there are about 30 of us who were probably willing to pony up for VIP tickets at $120-$150 for the weekend anyway (do the math)... however, there are a few problems. 1) The deadline for sponsorship commitments is Monday at noon, leaving us very little time, and 2) Most of us have already spent $50 for General Admission tickets, which would be money lost. Another related bit of news - Matt K had told me earlier that he was going to mention our group at their meeting last week regarding VIP tix, and he must have done that, 'cause I was also told by the same woman Karen talked to (Debbie) that they had decided to designate a special 'Ohnozone' area within the General Admission section, and that she might like to put something in the program about us. She was very interested in how we came together over the internet and became short-track fans and friends. I wasn't sure how they designated us the 'Ohnozone' group, but then I remembered telling Matt K that though we're from several different web 'homes', the one common thread was that virtually all of us read and/or post at OZ. The site is quite familiar to the skating community, so it seems appropriate to leave it like that and I'm hoping nobody here or any of our friends at DI feel excluded by the designation. Here are my thoughts about all of this... A sponsorship may have been do-able a month ago before everyone had bought their tickets, but would be difficult to accomplish at this late date. If anyone is really excited about this, feel free to PM me with what you'd donate to the effort - who knows what 30 determined people can accomplish! My inclination though is to accept the offer for the special seating area, forget trying to become a sponsor for the EVENT (the VIP area was nice, but it really wasn't 'all that'), and instead donate any of your extra dollars to sponsor a struggling SKATER. There is a Thomas McLean at USS who could be contacted about this. One last thing - Debbie said she'd need the names of people in our group who would like to be seated in our special section. If you want to be included, please PM me with your name. I was unclear as to whether she also wanted to put our names in the program, so when you PM me you should also let me know if you're comfortable with that... To make matters a little more complex, thanks to a defective surge protector and one very unfortunate squirrel (R.I.P.), my computer monitor 'fried' yesterday and I'm sharing one with a friend. We're trotting it back and forth while I'm waiting for a new one, and this will be an issue until I leave town on Thursday, so my ability to check in here will be sporadic. Bad, bad timing. (even worse timing for the squirrel)
