Since many of us have been recently catching the speedskating bug in general, and since Apolo is so related to the further spreading enthusiasm in the sport, I thought we needed a thread for our long-track friends. Moderators please move this to the un-Apolo related board if ou think more appropriate.

Thought this was interesting, as it appeared on apoloantonohno.com. For newbies, Shani is Apolo's best friend...
Wednesday, January 02, 2008 Congratulations to Shani Davis!
Shani Davis' performance at the US Long Track All Around Championships was again spectacular!
According to the SLC Tribune, his "Dominating Performance" this past weekend at the Olympic Oval in Kearns, UT. allowed him to break the American record for the 1000 meter with a run of 1 minute, 9.05.
Davis blew away the field in the men's 5,000 meters, skating 6 minutes and 17.48 seconds to record the best time at the distance by an American this season.
"Davis blew away the field...." At the last day of the event he almost lapped the second skater at the end in the 10,000 meter event!

There are a few articles over at the usspeedskating.org, under "News"...however I haven't figured out how to copy them.
But here's the gist of a recent article: "Former Olympian finally overcomes gash in ankle to win 1000 m race, take 2nd in 1500m"
This happened to Kip Carpenter. cut was so deep the ankle bone was exposed.
You can read the article over on usspeedskating.com.

aaosmts19 - I also found this to be an interesting interview.....especially his comments made regarding doing television interviews and guest spots on talk shows. It is very apparent that he chose to take a different route than Apolo to bring attention to the world of speed skating. I much prefer Apolo's choice to be a "visible" spokesperson!!! ;D

I much prefer Apolo's choice to be a "visible" spokesperson!!! ;D socalgrl...because of the hendrick spat at the torino games, shani has received unwanted negative attention...he even said in this interview that he felt that the publicity from that incident took away from his actual performances at the '06 games which is why imo, he is still reluctant to talk about it ...shani has chosen to bring attention to the sport he loves by his performances not by the media exposure he has now chosen to avoid.
aaosmts19...i love his passion! just by listening to shani's interview, i can hear why he and apolo are such great friends . ...i think ALL olympic athletes are special! good find aaosmts19!

From the news section of usspeedskating.org.
Shani Davis earned gold int he mens 1500m on 2/2 during the ISU Long Track World Cup Middle/Long Distance in Italy. It must have been outside, since part of the story is about the really bad weather conditions.
Congratulations, Shani!

WTG SHANI!!!
Tuesday, February 12, 2008 7:15:00 AM American men up to speed in Berlin By Matthew Dewhurst / WCSN.comFrom left: Runner-up Havard Bokko, winner Sven Kramer and third's Shani Davis in Berlin.(Getty Images)Americans Shani Davis and Chad Hedrick had standout performances at the ISU World Allround Speed Skating Championships this past weekend in Berlin, Germany. Davis had top-five finishes in each event, helping him secure the bronze medal in the overall competition. Davis won the men's 1,500-meter race, finished second in the 500 meters, claimed fourth in the 5,000 and fifth in the 10,000.
Sven Kramer of the Netherlands and Havard Bokko of Norway placed first and second, respectively, in the overall competition. Only .09 points separated Davis from Bokko in the overall competition.
Davis wasn't the only American to impress the crowd in Berlin, as Hedrick did not disappoint. The native Texan finished fourth overall, missing the podium by just .77 points. Hedrick finished fifth in the 1,500 meters and sixth in the 10,000 but had his best performance in the 5,000-meter race, finishing third behind Kramer and Bokko.
On the ladies' side, Paulien van Deutekom of the Netherlands took home the overall gold for the first time in her career with fellow countrywoman and defending champion Ireen Wust finishing second. Canadian Kristina Groves rounded out the top three overall.
Deutekom won medals in three individual events as well, winning the 3,000 meters, finishing second in the 1,500 and third in the 5,000.
Catherine Raney and Anna Ringsred were the highest-placed American women, finishing in 22nd and 24th overall respectively.
