I may be being completely stupid here, but isn't it a little early for "Olympic qualifying" competitions?

These are World Cup qualifying events, this year, anyway. Not the Olympics. Short track races the year before the Olympics do qualify you... but some ST expert will have to explain which and when, etc.

The official schedule was released (found it posted on OZ, so I thought I'd put it here in case people weren't checking during its hiatus): US Speedskating released its 2007-08 short track season schedule today. The final World Cup of the season will be held in Salt Lake City next Feb. 8-10. Here's the complete lineup: September 29-30, 2007 – American Cup I & World Cup #1, 2, 3, 4 Qualifier- Midland, MI October 19-21, 2007 – World Cup #1 – Harbin China October 26-28, 2007- World Cup #2 – Kobe, Japan November 3-4, 2007- American Cup II- Saratoga Springs, NY November 17-18, 2007 – US Junior Short Track Championships- Bay City, MI November 23-25, 2007- World Cup #3 – Heerenveen, Netherlands November 30-December 2, 2007- World Cup #4- Torino, Italy December 21-23, 2007- US Senior Championships, World Cup #5, 6 and World Championships Qualifier- Salt Lake City, UT January 11-13, 2008- World Junior ST Championships – Bolzano, Italy January 26-27, 2008 – American Cup III – Cleveland, OH February 2-3, 2008 – World Cup #5 – Quebec, Canada February 8-10, 2008- World Cup #6 – Salt Lake City, UT March 6-9, 2008 – American Cup Finals & National Age Group Championships- Milwaukee, WI March 7-9, 2008 – World Short Track Championships- Korea March 15-16, 2008 - World Team Championships- China March 22-23, 2008- North American Championships- Canada I am wondering if anyone has details on the meet in Saratoga Springs, NY in November. I have tried to google the ice rink there to find details. I found a Saratoga Springs Ice Rink at 30 Weibel Ave., but can't find an actual web page for the rink. I was hoping for confirmation of the America Cup II there. That would be the only event I could possibly hope to attend from here in MA. Thanks!

Okay, so I've never attended a short track race. Please, some OZers or people who have attended, how are the events? I'd LOVE to go to the one in Ohio... It's a drive from where I go to school, but it's the closest one of these events, and I just really want to go. How expensive are these things? I'm not the richest person alive. I've heard that they're really not that well-attended (actually read that in Apolo's book--so that's probably outdated). But I'd really like to go...and it would be wonderful if I didn't have to sit in the nosebleeds so I could actually SEE what's going on...
Susie, I know you've gone... Do you just buy a ticket for a section of the arena? Any chance there is open seating or a possibility of moving once you get in?

I read on the site for the Midland MI race that the cost per person per day is $10, but it does not specify if that is first come first serve seating or not.

Are you serious?? That cheap? I had no idea... I guess I'm too used to the prices of NFL games... *doink* But perhaps...ahem...short track does not have the audience of the NFL.

US short-track should be so lucky as to need to seat fans in the nose-bleed section!!!! I haven't been either but my reasearch indicates the events are very cheap (compared to any major sport venue) and front row seats aren't hard to get at all even at the most major of events (short of the Olympics and maybe the qualifiers for the Olympics). Check and see if they have a VIP pkg for the event you want to go to and for a little bit more you'll get all kinds of goodies including, possibly, the banquet after. Get on OZ if you are looking for people to hook up with at the event, at a common hotel (stay where Apolo stays ) or even a roomate to share the bill with. Oh yeah, take good pics, attempt to entice a skater into at least partial disrobememt, try to get the dirt on the Baver-Koenig romance.

I once again have beverages spat all over my computer screen. I'm going to have to learn to "step away from the coffee cup, wine glass, etc" while I'm reading these things. And from a different thread- nice to know there are some fellow Dave Barry fans on the board. Thanks for reminding me about that article. Oh, and I wish my thighs could be taught to be tight --if it only was that easy...

I'm trying a new fitnes regime based on the homily "it's the thought that counts." Progress is slow, arse is falling fast.

Do you just buy a ticket for a section of the arena? Any chance there is open seating or a possibility of moving once you get in? It depends on what the host committee has planned. I've seen tix go for as cheap as $10 (or even *gasp* free at local events) up to, I think, $75 (or was it $150?) for "VIP" seating. Those events that have VIP seating usually reserves seats near the start line for the VIPs, and get perks free sweatshirts, tickets to the awards dinner, meet and greets and a VIP room with snacks. If you get the regular tix, it's first come, first served in terms of seating. Sometimes, that's not a problem if you're at a big arena, but sometimes the venue is a small rink so rinkside seats go fast. Of course, MT pretty much said all of that, but I wanted to say it again.

Thanks for all the great info. I've gotta get myself to SLC in February and see this stuff in person!!! But, I have a question -- how do you know if it will be a competition where you can see Apolo skate? Which ones are the safest bets?

I also want to get my butt to SLC but I just know my hubby won't let me go. I can stay with my sis, get her to join me even though she would have no interest in going to see Apolo, but we don't even know if he'll be at this event. I was wondering if he'd skate in the SLC ones because he lives there?

Lurker, when is the Cleveland race? I remember seeing it on the list but can't remember why I decided MI would be a better choice, which is looking less and less like it's going to happen every day.
