It's been interesting reading all the conflicting opinions about this photoshoot, and I can't help but wonder if some feel like the picture shows them what they dream about and have kept somewhere in their minds to think about privately, and now everyone can see it... the whole world. IMO, I think the shot was tasteful, but I do agree that it's oddly out of place in the context of the ad. I just have a curious mind as to why they chose to do that...

I've already set the nude pic as my desktop background. Wicked!!!!!!! I cant wait 2 see it meself. Seriously, for how more is the negative criticism going. ITS JUST A BLOODY PHOTO. nothing more. this feels the same as with the whole Allison thing. Could we just let the man be? or are we from a diff. century in which people dont come out naked on the telly? Who cares? (I see some do) Why could we not just enjoy it. I dont see any difference from when we're looking at his photos of his @ss or his package. I don't hear anyone complaining there. Bloody Hell, could we just let him be? No wonder he's so bloody private with everything. Nobody likes to hear negative criticism, especially if they dont even know the person. Its for a good cause anyways. I dont see him selling his body (although, I believe there are some who'd pay good money) We already see him naked, in a sorta of way, in his skinsuit. The only difference is that its colored blue and not flesh. Actually, it isn't the picture of Apolo that I don't like. It is the ad itself. Actually, I think he looks quite nice. Really nice indeed. What I don't like, is that the ad has everyone clothed but him. Maybe they should all be nude. Or all clothed. But why is only Apolo nude? It looks like his picture belongs in a different ad. Whatever. I would've loved for the photo to be a bit larger in size. Im very into details that way I'd set it as my background as well and become an art historian in a split second. Wicked. I dont think I'll like to see any of the other people on the ad naked. I think I likes it the way it is. It is quite different from the other ones, but Im sure very glad that it was him naked and not anyone else. Im pretty sure that if it'd happened to be otherwise, they'd be people complaining on why wasn't he naked and the others were so. I love it. I also loved the other photo as well. I like it even more and thats because I love the way his smile looks in it. On the other photo he looks a bit coy. which happens to be very arousing. nicely said, I think its fine. Love those legs. Can't wait to see his bare bum I see how everyones here again. Fancy controversy, I see. Maybe Apolo should go striking.

I bought The New Yorker today and ohhhhhh, Apolo looks amazingly beautiful in all three of his spots throughout the magazine! I also like the way the other models' ads were placed.
The large, nude Apolo pic with no words covering him is gorgeous and so very powerful! It makes much more of an impact on its own and seems very 'appropriate' in that context. I notice the bandana more that way, too.
I really did not notice the clothes that were for sale on the other celebrities when I viewed the 'first' larger ad online as much as I do now, either. I was too busy trying to figure out who they were, and the clothing did not seem as vibrant. I plan to get several of the bandanas (for myself and gifts, assuming they really are for sale) as well as other items as gifts to support this cause/campaign.
These ads really are so much more lovely in print than online, so I hope everyone who wants to is able to get a copy of one the mags they'll appear in.
Spectacular, Apolo and Ms. Leibovitz!

I can't wait to get my copy of the New Yorker (hopefully) tomorrow!! Lindsey said: Well, y'know.....maybe so, Lindsey. I think some people might feel that way. Over the last 4 years, I've also seen people take it very hard, to the point of being absolutely ripped up, when the real man Apolo says or does something that is contrary to what their perfect "fantasy Apolo" would have said or done. And some people, I think, really do worry that he's gonna get used & abused out in the mean old world. But y'know what? He's a 24 year old man and he's gonna do what he's gonna do. For myself, I would be seriously bummed if Apolo engaged in... say....major criminal activity or a doping scandal in sports after claiming to be "Mr. Clean"........but baring his gaw-geous self in an artsy shoot for a good cause?......NAH! I can't pretend to be appalled, 'cause I'm just not. I think he's beautiful and I think the folks from the general public who view the Gap Red Campaign ads will think so too (imho)

I've already set the nude pic as my desktop background. LOL oh wow, that's daring! lol. I don't live by myself, so if I'd put the pic as my desktop background...oh man, ppl in my house would be shocked and maybe think I'm a pervert (j/k lol.) I'm too scared to put it as a wallpaper

*Bella donning Photography as Art Critic Hat* Here's what I see. You've got this thigh, this massive, powerful, angular thigh, that dominates the shot. It is raw and animalistic. He is holding it back with his hand, but even he is having trouble restraining it. His fingers are tense, his grip firm. He created this thigh and although it fights to break free, he has it tamed for the time being. We lose the buttocks at the bottom of the picture but the u-turn suggested is palpable and we easily travel back up through the slender waist and chest. We are out of wild kingdom now and back in the man village. That massive thigh is attached to a human being! A man. A young man with a tender looking belly and a delicate looking nipple. The shade in these areas echo their softness, yet they are not entirely hidden from us. He is not afraid or ashamed to be soft, too. How different the appendage is on this end of this marvelous creature! The perfectly parallel angles of the thigh and the arm accentuate this contrast. Half beast, half man… or is it really in thirds? For now we travel upward past sloping shoulders and back to the sharp jaw and the playful, puckish smile. Man and beast, yes, but the eye hints at a third element… a jaunty kind of sorcery. Something of the stuff that turns frogs into princes and ordinary men into Olympic champions. The Peter Pan do completes the magic, as if he’s just flown in from Neverland and is sitting on your bedroom window sill poised for the next swashbuckling adventure. Third star on the right; straight on ‘till morning. Wendy never had it so good.

Im thinking that one of the reason for the position of the shot, I love that word "position" , .....yeah, came about since he's an olympic athlete. Back in the Roman days, if im not mistaken, Olympic athletes would sometimes pose and go about their business nakes. isn't that sweet? i know..... i would've loved for Apolo and I to have been present during those days.

What an excellent critique, Bella! Elle, yes, Apolo would have had to skate naked if he and his sport existed back then! How wonderful! ;D That would have been rather dangerous, though! And, unfortunately for us, women were not allowed to watch the competitions. But maybe we could have forced our way in!

bella...either you are a very astute art major, or an advid reader of those cheesey romance novels. either way, your descriptions almost make me feel naughty for reading it!
good job, nonetheless...!
