Will jordan be at the Olympics.... Who is in line to take his spot? Jeff? Depends how many skaters we're allowed to have at the Olys. And I do believe Jeff is the sub.

I'd say this is VERY good news...Jordan just posted on his FB: "SOMEBODY just got cleared to put skates on after his fourth day of rehab!!! Long way to go... but thats a start" CONGRATS JORDAN! :] Great news! Couldn't be a torn ACL.

Last tuneup on home soil Canadians must secure high rankings to earn chance to skate in Vancouver CANWEST NEWS SERVICENOVEMBER 5, 2009
Canada's Olympic short-track speed-skating team will be in action this week at the Maurice Richard Arena in its last competition on home soil before the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.
The ISU Short Track World Cup Montreal 2009 begins today and runs through Sunday, bringing together the best skaters from around the world hoping to secure the maximum quotas in each distance for the winter Games.
Skaters finishing in the top 32 (top 36 for the 1,500 metres) rankings combined from the Montreal and Marquette World Cups (to be held the following weekend) will earn a spot for their country to skate in Vancouver in February.
Canada's Own the Podium program has set a goal of Canada finishing atop the medal standings in Vancouver and the short-track team will be counted on to bring home a good chunk of that medal haul.
"We have big goals, I understand that, but to be honest I don't feel any more pressure than I usually would, because we've all done it before," Montreal's François-Louis Tremblay, a silver medallist at the 2006 Games in Turin, Italy, said when the winter Olympic team was announced this summer.
"If we win one medal at the Olympics, we can't say we'll be satisfied, because it won't be true. The way I look at goals is that you can choose to set safe, reachable ones, but why wouldn't you choose to set extraordinary ones? If you can get there, why not shoot for that?" Only one member of the Canadian team isn't from Quebec: Edmonton's Jessica Gregg.
The rest of the women's team is made up of Marianne St-Gelais of St. Félicien, Kalyna Roberge of St. Étienne de Lauzon, Valérie Maltais of La Baie and Tania Vicent of Laval.
The Canadian men's team consists of Montreal's Tremblay, Olivier Jean of Lache-naie, Charles and François Hamelin of Ste. Julie, and Guillaume Bastille of Rivière du Loup.
At the first two World Cup stops of the season, in Beijing and Seoul, Canada won nine medals (one gold, three silver and five bronze). The main focus in Montreal and Marquette will be qualifying a maximum number of athletes for the Vancouver Games.

About Kwak not making the 500m: the 500m is BY FAR the Korean's worst distance.
Poor Lee. Get well, Lee-kun~!
And, yeah. I don't think Apolo announced he was retiring, ne? Oooo, this is sooo nerve-racking; I've got butterflies already!

Source: www.teamusa.org/news/article/28823World Cup events begin for Short and Long Track SpeedskatingUS Speedskating - US Speed Skating November 05, 2009 U.S. speedskating athletes are traveling the globe to earn qualifying spots on the 2010 U.S. Olympic team. Under the direction of National Head Coach Jae Su Chun, the U.S. Short Track World Cup team arrived in Montreal, Quebec for World Cup 3 which begins today with qualifying rounds in the Men's and Ladies' 1500m and 500m events. This event (and the final World Cup in Marquette, MI next weekend) will determine how many short track speedskating athletes US Speedskating will take to Vancouver in February. "It is finally starting to feel like the racing season has truly started," said Olympic gold-medalist Apolo Anton Ohno. "With the first set of World Cups being so close to our Olympic Trials I wasn't in the correct mindset or physical condition to compete internationally but now things are slowly coming back into place."Injuries have plagued the U.S. National Short Track Team with Allison Baver (Sinking Spring, PA) recovering from a broken leg, J.R. Celski (Federal Way, WA) recuperating from a slashed thigh and Jordan Malone (Denton, TX) out of the remaining World Cup events with an injured knee. All three athletes are expected to be at peak performance once they hit the ice in Vancouver. "Although Zhou Yang from China has been my biggest competition in the 1500m and Meng Wang from China in the 1000m, right now my biggest competition has been time," Baver said. "It is hard competing in the World Cups leading up to the Olympics knowing you are not at your best yet."The U.S. athletes participating in the Short Track World Cup are: Men Olympic gold-medalist Apolo Anton Ohno (Seattle, WA) Olympian Anthony Lobello (Tallahassee, FL) Olympian Charles Ryan Leveille (Atlanta, GA) Travis Jayner (Midland, MI) Simon Cho (Laurel, MD) Jeff Simon (Las Vegas, NV) Ladies Three-time U.S. Champion Katherine Reutter (Champaign, IL) Olympian Allison Baver (Sinking Spring, PA) Olympian Kimberly Derrick (Memphis, TN) Alyson Dudek (Hales Corners, WI) Lana Gehring (Glenview, IL) Jessica Smith (Melvindale, MI) In Europe, the Long Track World Cup runs from November 6-8 in Berlin, Germany. The first of five LT World Cup events, this is the first international competition of the season and a proving ground for U.S. athletes. Olympic gold-medalist and U.S. National Head Coach Derek Parra is working with Olympians Chad Hedrick (Spring, TX) and Catherine Raney (Elm Grove, WI), preparing them for competition on the world stage. "I want to use the World Cups as a springboard for high level competition but we're still in training," Parra said. "These World Cups are like a dress rehearsal. We have to build ourselves to have a great performance at the Games." The U.S. athletes competing at the Long Track World Cup are: Men Olympian Shani Davis (Chicago, IL) Olympian Chad Hedrick (Spring, TX) Olympian Tucker Fredricks (Janesville, WI) Olympian Nick Pearson (West Allis, WI) Trevor Marsicano (Ballston Spa, NY) Brent Aussprung (Madison, WI) Matt Plummer (St. Louis, MO) Jonathan Kuck (Champaign, IL) Brian Hansen (Glenview, IL) Ryan Bedford (Midland, MI) Ladies Olympian Jen Rodriguez (Miami, FL) Olympian Elli Ochowicz (Palo Alto, CA) Olympian Catherine Raney (Elm Grove, WI) Olympian Maria Lamb (River Falls, WI) 2009 U.S. Sprint Champion Heather Richardson (High Point, NC) 2009 U.S. Allround Champion Nancy Swider-Peltz, Jr. (Glenview, IL) Lauren Cholewinski (York, SC) Rebekah Bradford (Apple Valley, MN) Jilleanne Rookard (Woodhaven, MI)

MEDIA ROUND-UP: Source: www.google.com/hostednews/canadianpress/article/ALeqM5h2rd_Iq4dl7cxIUf3We-e8PDlxvgShort-trackers carefully checking out international competition at World CupBy Jennifer Ditchburn (CP) – 2 hours ago MONTREAL — Montreal is notorious for people shamelessly checking each other out, and it's no different on the ice at the Maurice Richard Arena this week. Short-track speedskaters competing in the second-last World Cup before the 2010 Vancouver Games are focused on their rankings, but they're also taking notes on how their competitors are performing, what equipment they're wearing and any new strategies they're putting into the mix. "I came here to see where everybody was at, and kind of judge where I have to be in three months," said American threat J.R. Celski, who is still recovering from a serious self-inflicted cut to his leg two months ago.The Canadian team is conscious of all the intelligence gathering - they're doing the same - so keeping a little air of mystery around their skaters is part of the strategy. National team program director Yves Hamelin says that includes technical information about their equipment. "Everything is hidden in an appropriate environment, and at game-time we have the opportunity to get a dedicated changing room, so our athletes will have their own recipe in various areas," said Hamelin, father of Canadian team members Charles and Francois. "It's nothing super big, but it's something that's giving them a little edge in every race." Medal-favourite Kalyna Roberge, 23, said she is trying out different techniques and strategies at this World Cup, so she can know what works and what doesn't before Vancouver. Still, "there's a few cards we still have yet to play," Roberge said. The same goes for 1,000 metre world record holder Charles Hamelin. He said he tried a few things out the ice Friday, such as working on his outside pass, but he still wants to keep the competition guessing in Vancouver. "I'll say that we don't want to show everything right now because if they know everything we'll be easier to beat," said Hamelin. "So if we have some secret things, then it will be harder to read us in the race." The finals this weekend of the International Skating Union short-track speedskating World Cup will help shape the roster of athletes who will compete in Vancouver. The rankings from Montreal will be combined with the rankings from another World Cup next weekend in Marquette, Michigan. Canada had a major disappoinment Friday morning when Olivier Jean was disqualified for blocking another skater during a 1,000 metre preliminary race.Canada automatically gets one spot in each distance, and in the relay races, but would like to score the maximum of three skaters in each Olympic race. - - - - - - Source: www.google.com/hostednews/canadianpress/article/ALeqM5jid0mIHAFaSwUdM4WGKjeyj3ef4QSpeedskater Olivier Jean disqualified in short-track World Cup qualifierBy Jennifer Ditchburn (CP) – 1 hour ago MONTREAL — Canadian short-track speedskater Olivier Jean stormed angrily off the ice Friday after being disqualified from a World Cup 1,000-metre competition. Jean blocked German skater Tyson Heung, a dual citizen from Brampton, Ont., as he tried to improve his position rounding a corner during a preliminary race at the Maurice Richard Arena. This week's World Cup will help determine which athletes secure spots at the Vancouver Olympics in February. The normally upbeat Jean, visibly upset by the disappointment, said he was too ambitious.
"I made a tactical error," said the 25-year-old from Lachenaie, Que. "The German was a bit wide at the start of the curve and I thought I had enough speed to pass him and I jumped into the inside.
"I misread the situation. I should have been happy with second place."Jean is one of Canada's stronger competitors and placed first in the initial rounds Thursday afternoon. He'll have the opportunity to make up some ground next weekend in Marquette, Mich., for the final pre-Olympic races. The disqualification is proof of how unpredictable short-track speedskating races can be, where skaters round corners with only a few inches separating them. "It does really put more pressure on next week," said the quirky Jean, who sports a wild mop of long blond hair. "I'm responsible for this extra pressure and I'm going to do everything possible to get back the points I lost this week. But it's not the end of the world." On Thursday, Guillaume Bastille and Tania Vicent failed to advance past the quarter-finals in the 1,500-metre races, but the rest of the team went forward as expected in the various distances. National team program director Yves Hamelin said the focus will be on keeping the skaters in the top ten at Marquette. "We know they're able to reach those positions. It's not a worry ... but we can't allow any more errors and I think the three guys understand," said Hamelin, father to brothers Charles and Francois on the Olympic team. The men's 5,000-metre relay team skated to an easy first-place finish in its heat ahead of Great Britain. Charles and Francois Hamelin also placed first in their heats in preliminaries for the 1,000 metres. Vicent, Kalyna Roberge and Marianne St-Gelais all advanced in the women's 1,000 metres. The 32 top-ranked athletes in the 500 and 1,000 metres will go on to the Olympic competition while the top 36 in the 1,500 will advance. Canada, as the host country, also receives an automatic spot in each distance, and in the 3,000 and 5,000 metres. The number of boisterous Canadian fans brandishing noisemakers and handmade banners increased steadily at the arena as the skaters got closer to the semifinals and finals on the weekend. Canada's men's Olympic squad also includes Francois-Louis Tremblay of Alma, Que. The women's team also features Valerie Maltais of La Baie, Que. and Jessica Gregg of Edmonton. - - - - - - Source: www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/sports/2009/11/136_55032.html11-06-2009 19:11 More Medals Expected for Korea at World CupBy Matt Flemming Staff Reporter The Korean short track speedskating team looks poised for yet another medal haul at the third World Cup event of the season in Montreal, Canada. Through Day 1 on Thursday, Lee Jung-su, Sung Si-bak and Kim Seoung-il are ranked first, second and third in the men's 1,500 meters entering the quarterfinals. Korea won all six medals that have been awarded in the men's 1,500 in the first two events but were without Lee Ho-suk, who is out with an injury. Sung has also positioned himself well in the 500 meters through the preliminaries, ranking fourth behind Francois-Louis Tremblay and Charles Hamelin of Canada and Han Jialiang of China. On the women's side, Cho Ha-ri and Kim Min-jung are ranked third and fourth entering the quarterfinals while Lee Eun-byul is 13th. Through the preliminaries in the 500 meters, Park Seung-hi is fifth while Lee is ninth and Cho is 14th. The results of the Montreal tournament along with those from the fourth World Cup competition next week in Marquette, Mich. will determine how many athletes each country can send to each event at the Olympics next February in Vancouver. Each country can have a maximum of three skaters in each of the individual events. One skater can compete in as many as two races in addition to the relay.
The results from the two events will be combined and the top 32 skaters in the 1000 and 500 meters, the top 36 in the 1,500 meters and the top eight relay teams will qualify. The results will establish a quota for each nation, so as long as Korea has at least three top-32 finishers in the 500 meters, they can send any three skaters they choose.

I will be in transit when Day 3 starts, so unless someone else posts results before me, I'll catch us up when I get where I'm going (I'm going to take my laptop with me just so I don't miss today's racing). :]
