Rain pattered against the windows. Apolo pointed out the sights of the city, and I felt like I was seeing them all for the first time. Seeing the Space Needle, glowing in the distance, made me sigh happily. He smiled, squeezed my shoulder, and I knew he understood. Talk about coming full circle.
I didn’t notice the limo slowing down until Apolo glanced out the window. Then he grinned at me.
“We’re here.”
“Here” was a restaurant that looked very elegant. Refined architecture, garden-lined walkway. On top of that, there was dim yet romantic lighting that extended, it seemed, into the building. The place felt glamorous but not snobbish or over-the-top. We walked hand-in-hand. I did my best to mirror his casual confidence with more success than usual.
A waiter led us through the building, past crowds of curious diners, to a secluded area with a balcony overlooking the sea. He handed out menus and was about to go get our drinks when Apolo stopped him with a friendly shoulder clap.
“Don’t let anyone bother us, alright, man?”
“Yes, sir.” The guy nodded, closing the door behind him as he left. I barely noticed. I was too busy examining the way the table was set up. One chair was on each side. No, I thought, that wouldn’t do at all.
“Wait a second..” I said when he started to sit down. He waited with a cute and very amused smile while I grabbed one of the chairs then moved it next to its partner. “There. That’s better.”
“It’s more than better. It’s perfect.” In a split second his smile softened. Then he pulled a chair out, gesturing for me to sit down. So I sat, unable to stop smiling to save my life. He pushed my chair in, stroked my shoulder, and sat beside me. At that exact moment my stomach roared. I blushed, but Apolo just grinned with a teasing glint in his eyes.
“You –did- eat today, right?”
“Ye-es! Well, I had breakfast anyway. I wasn’t really hungry after that, though. Too nervous about tonight, I guess.” I bit my lip, glanced down at my hand. Immediately I felt a surge of warmth as his hand covered mine.
“Are you still nervous?”
“A little.”
“You’ll be fine. Noone’s going to mess with us tonight.” His fingers brushed against the back of my hand with each word.
“Promise?”
“I promise.” Hand squeeze and grin. “So..what’re you hungry for?”
“I’m not really sure. Something different, I guess.”
“Okay. Let me see.” He glanced down at my menu, searching intently for some unknown item. When he found what he was looking for he put his finger next to it. “How about this?”
I read the description, considered, and nodded.
“That sounds delicious. Thanks.” On some impulsive whim I kissed his cheek. “For being so sweet, I mean.”
“No problem, Marlise. You definitely deserve it.” To emphasize this he kissed my nose. Five seconds later the waiter came back and Apolo rattled off our orders. The waiter wrote them down and nodded before taking off again. As for me, my eyes were glued to the man beside me, completely mesmerized.
“You really mean that, don’t you?”
“Yeah. I do.” His gaze was intense, but in a good way. “You’re not dreaming, by the way.”
“Apolo, if this is a dream, I must be in a friggin’ coma!” Somehow I managed to say this with a straight face…that is, until I saw him grin. I knew I was pretty much screwed, so I giggled. “I’m sorry. That was silly.”
“You’re fine, baby. That was cute. I like your sense of humor.”
“Even when it’s crazy?”
“Especially when it’s crazy. I love how easily you embrace your crazy side.” He lifted his hand to my cheek. My breath caught in my throat, anticipating his kiss…but it never came. His eyes darkened, still sparkling in the dim light. He didn’t move, though.
Then….Finally, I got the hint and spoke up.
“I love you.” So long ago I had had trouble saying it. Now, though, it felt as natural as breathing.
“Much better.” Barely a whisper. “I love you too.” The kiss that followed was soft, sweet….aand entirely too short. I sighed in protest, then turned to see what had stolen his attention. Our waiter had returned with our meals in what seemed like record time. Suddenly my protest felt pathetic. I mean, Apolo was only protecting our privacy. At least he wasn’t the type of man that wanted everyone to know about his (well, our) love life. That was definitely a blessing.
